I know we’re a couple of months past Christmas but here’s an interesting rendition of Little Drummer Boy by Amira Willighagen and friends.  This is my all time favourite version, performed by Winnipeg’s Sean Quigley.

I’m really enjoying the updates from this fellow, who was one of those behind Live From The Shed.  He strikes me as a very honourable man.

    2. To elaborate on the above. It was both. The “coup” was a genuine grassroots revolution by Ukrainian patriots and it was halfassingly backed by NATO. Interests of both parties aligned and aimed at a removal of Pootin’s puppet.

      1. I think Ukraine should declare itself a neutral nation. Stop courting NATO, and things settle down. The ethnic mix (so many of Russian descent in the Ukraine) also makes this the most reasonable option.

          1. I’ve watched this video and it keeps missing the point. He claims to understand russia, mumbles about realpolitik but he misses the key point entirely. The reason Pootinista junta invaded Ukraine has nothing to do with Ukraine turning towards the west. Ukraine could have declared itself Finland of the south and Pootin would still call them Nazis and invade. Why? Because he can. Because only power stops him. NATO was never a threat to russia.         2. You keep missing the point. The “don’t poke a bear” only works when the rabid, diseased bear isn’t snacking on you already. The bear has been biting into Ukraine as soon as it somewhat sobered up after the fall of Soviet Union. Since Pootin got in power kremlin has been consistently meddling in Ukrainian affairs. They are not doing it in response to what Ukraine is doing. They are doing it because they can. Because they have opportunity. And they can always cook up justifications so gullible westerns can say “aha because Ukraine did etc etc etc”. Unless Ukraine agrees to puppet state status like Belarus, Kremlin will continue trying to destroy that country. And once they succeed others will be next. You can’t expect a rabid animal to stop being rabid when you play nice with it. Those countries that joined NATO are more or less safe. Those that did not have russian boots on their soil (Moldova, Gerogia, Ukraine). Because russia never changes. Because such is russian way.

          Corruption is prevalent among those that feel the laws are an impediment instead of a protective measure to their pursuit of happiness.
          One can be just as evil and barbaric as any historical reference while donning a pleasant visage.
          This is why we developed the concept of innocence until guilt is proven beyond reasonable doubt and due process.
          Putin may be demonstrating traits you or I find abhorrent, but we have no assurance that those that claim to be on the side of the angels in the west are not acting in bad faith.

          Just something to consider.

      2. I think you are a bit dogmatic. Some Ukrainians are crooks. Some of course are hard working, etc. but don’t be naive, painting everyone with the same brush. Similarly the Russians. Many are very decent. In fact, there is a great deal of similarity between Russians and Ukrainians despite the historical and current political rifts.

    I gleaned this from Zerohedge; this guy says it all for me. With the stupid fake color revolution, that ousted the legitimate governement, the Ukrainians were teased into thinking they could join NATO with no complaint from the Russians.

    How Putin handles this is going to be very interesting. He will have to install a compliant government without disturbing the locals. Tricky.

The thesis of the essay is that Trudeau’s Laurentian establishment, which controls all top-down information, had no way of dealing with the truckers, who came to Ottawa with real trucks and disrupted the establishment elites.     This gets me to thinking about Putin’s Ukraine invasion. I detest Putin and his fascist invasion, but I do read the other side. I reject the Awful Truth’s argument — that fascism, destruction of civil liberties and mass concentration camps are good things. But I do respect the argument that Europe is so decedent and corrupt, Russia can go ahead and invade since there is little left to protect.

    On this note, let’s look at the decedent West and its establishment oligarchs. Putin is invading Ukraine with an actual, physical military force. Biden and the Eurocrats can only retaliate with token numbers of troops and cosmetic sanctions. The West wll still buy Russian energy, since to do otherwise would discomfort the ruling elites. Ukraine is now lost, since all the West can do is to posture with meaningless talk and pushing a few buttons.

    I posted on another SDA thread today Terry Glavin’s essay, calling for a guerrilla war against Russia, where the West must bear some real costs and impose real costs on Russia. Analogously, conservatives in Canada must organize further, and wage guerrilla war against the establishment information elites. An example of a guerrilla battle: start a fund to help Tamara Lich’s legal defence.

    1. Before she played her best-known movie role, she was in the second Star Trek pilot, along with future 2001: A Space Odyssey star Gary Lockwood.

      The first pilot eventually appeared in the series as a two-part episode featuring Jeffrey Hunter and–wait for it!–Leonard Nimoy as an emotional Spock. After that didn’t sell, the second pilot (with Shatner and Nimoy) was made with many of that cast appearing as regulars in the series.

        1. I believe you’re thinking of Majel Barrett. She played both Number One in The Cage, which was the original title of the first pilot, and Nurse Chapel in the series (Dr. Chapel in the first ST movie). She later played Deanna Troi’s mother in Star Trek: The Next Generation, who often flirted with Jean-Luc Picard, if I remember correctly.

          Watch for her as a saloon girl in Westworld.

            If I’m not mistaken (BTW, I’m not a Trekkie), Roddenberry’s second attempt at a pilot was about a year after The Cage. I don’t remember why the original wasn’t accepted. Both Hunter and Barrett were good in their roles.

            Maybe Nimoy’s original depiction of Spock wasn’t sufficiently alien, as there is a distinct difference when he played him again in Where No Man Has Gone Before. His appearance was close to what it was in the series and the later movies, and the Vulcan trait of being logical was apparent.

            Maybe The Cage was too radical a departure from what was considered conventional science fiction.

The Company complained that covid has prevented potential customers from sampling its products (?), hence growth has stalled. Seems people have no appetite for its stock as well as the products because the company is down 10% this morning to $43.67 from its high of $160 reached on June 30, 2021. BYND:US.

  36. A short-notice movie alert.

    TCM will be showing Fargo tomorrow night. It’s one of my two favourite Coen brothers movies.

    Also, next week is the start of the traditional annual observance 31 Days of Oscar. Usually, the schedule is posted well in advance on its website but I can’t find it this time.

    I noticed among next week’s offerings is the John Wayne movie She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, one of John Ford’s so-called “Cavalry Trilogy”, which won an Oscar for cinematography. It’s a pretty decent horse opera and features many members of Ford’s unofficial acting company including Ben Johnson, Harry Carey, Jr., Victor McLaglen, George O’Brien, Arthur Shields, and Chief John Big Tree.
