GoFundMe scrambles to reverse one of the worst corporate blunders in tech history.

The update we issued earlier enabled all donors to get a refund and outlined a plan to distribute remaining funds to verified charities selected by the Freedom Convoy organizers. However, due to donor feedback, we are simplifying the process for you. We will automatically refund your contributions directly – you do not need to submit a request. You can expect to see your refund within 7-10 business days.

    NO PROOF of anything unpeaceful or illegal. The lying scum at the top of the Ottawa Police should be hauled in front of a Conservative-lead House Of Commons committee on Monday, fully televised on CPAC, and asked to share precisely what they said to GoFundMe.

    Never in my lifetime did I think I would be living through Actual Facism in Canada, with state & corporate parties colluding together to stamp out the freedom of the Canadian people!!! #Shame

  3. The ZH article states that “All donors received this emailed statement early Saturday morning”. I received no such unsolicited email from GFM this morning. I did though submit my request and I received a reply to that. So if you used these fraudsters to donate to the truckers, be sure to submit a refund request anyway.

    1. Yes, if you sit back and wait the 7 to 10 days they suggest.
      You won’t get a cent back, it will have been dispersed to those (Charities) (BLM) they want to give it to.

      File your request for a refund or have your bank do it!
      Don’t delay.

      1. I’m going to the bank and doing a charge back. I’ll get my donation back and GFM will have to pay a bank fee. It should be painful to be unethical.

    Hell, go donate five bucks to some other GoFraudMe and then request a refund for that too.

      I requested my refund twice. First using their regular refund page, and then again using the special link set up just for the Freedom Convoy.

      By the way, GFM already paid out $1Million. If they refund all money, will they lose the $1M?

    2. Request a charge back/reversal through your bank claiming fraud.
      I believe Go F Me is operated under banking regulations. It may affect their standing.
      Saw that on Telegram FWIW.

  6. I think GoFundMe is well aware of the circulating ‘viral message’ to go through your own bank to reverse payment and are just trying to get out in front of it. Heading off substantial bank fees from possibly 10’s of thousands of payment reversals would definitely help save their bottom line… but the self-inflicted damage to their reputation is irreversible. A hearty “thank you” to everyone who took the time to offer some “donor feedback” to these ignorant Liberal pawns at GFM.

  11. What this policy meant in effect was that if you donated money through GoFundMe, the money could go to any cause the company wanted.

    Giving people a good reason to avoid GoFundMe.

    Unfortunately for them, they shut the barn door after the horse had bolted. It’ll take time to recover from this PR disaster.

    They know that if they send the money elsewhere they have likely committed a US Federal offence. Some powerful people in the US are already calling for an investigation.

    They also don’t want to have to pay the credit card bill that will result from their having to follow credit card refund processes.

    I like Stan’s idea. Donate a small amount to a different cause – then ask for a refund. This should overwhelm them and undermine their platform. Remember the small guys who killed the short selling profiteers in the GameStop debacle. Use their tools against them.

  16. Be aware that our collective outrage could be silenced should Bill C-11 be passed. Minister of Heritage, Pablo Rodriguez has introduced his re-boot of Bill C-10 which had previously folded under strong criticism. Like its predecessor, C-11 takes dead aim at media sites which contradict government propaganda. No doubt SDA is high on the Turd’s hit list.

      They know that they need to be able to clamp down on free exchange of ideas. To shut dow the GFM account they had to lie to GFM. And they had to rely on an out of Canada third party to be convinced to do their bidding.
      With the censorship bill passed, they will be able to do it much quicker and more directly – for our own good and to protect us from the evils of white supremacy.

I was actually stunned to hear the trucker’s were using GoFundMe and I figured it would only be a matter of time before this happened. Oh well tactical error and it has pissed off so many people it may actually work to the benefit of the truckers.

Because GFM is signatory of contracts and this move is breach of basic contracts and regulations. I’m pretty sure they guarantee that your $ are used exactly as intended, not as they or gov seems fit.
    A huge class-action lawsuit should bankrupt them. And credit score for company itself should go to ZERO.

      FB on the other hand, has flopped with its Meta branding, and it’s reputation, of blocking and deleting users is manifesting itself. Yes, Zuck will always be a filthy rich Twit, but his power is being reduced, and THAT is important. These egotistical sociopaths hate it when they lose and they are no longer “the best”.

      Because everyone in the tech industry is. It wasn’t always this way, although the software and Internet polities have always leaned left as they’re generally in tight with universities. But IBM, Solaris and Oracle were hardly ever “left-wing”.

      What pushed the industry solidly into the leftists’ camp was the Communications Decency Act, a massive self-own by Gingrich’s Republicans. In their hysterical fear of Boobies on teh Interwebz, they demonstrated that they had no idea what the Internet was or how it functions and that they were willing to write ridiculous law based on that.

  26. A restaurant uses a stove in the course of its business. A stove is tech. That makes the restaurant a . . . food service.

    GoFundMe uses tech in the course of its business, but its business model operates at a level of tech below that of a simple fire pit. It isn’t tech, it’s finance, and at the lowest level of finance at that.

  27. $10+ Million were donated. Only $1M was given the truckers leaving $9M in the kitty.
    Now if everyone who donated requested a refund that would be $10m in refunds for a net loss of $1M to gofundme. Please encourage everyone to demand a refund. When the $9m is refunded gofundme will try to stop the refunds but there are legal remedies for holding back refunds. Make it expensive for them .
    Of course this loss would be minor but the loss of reputation is the real penalty.
