Frankly, it’s not very good. The only reason I saw this one again was that, this past Friday, TCM showed some of Baker’s movies and I remembered watching it a long time ago as a late-night flick. In fact, the preview is better than the movie itself–watch that and you’ve seen most of the best action scenes.
Attenborough, however, was OK in it. Watch for Julian Glover and John Thaw in early roles, the latter well before he played Inspector Morse on TV.
Among the cast are Jack Hawkins, Flora Robson, and Mia Farrow in what I understand was her first movie role.
This film re-unites Attenborough with a fellow cast member from The Great Escape, John Leyton. Attenborough is superb as the unit’s Regimental Sergeant Major.
By the way, what sold me on The Last Grenade when I was still in high school was its advertising campaign (“Mercenaries invading China!”).
If you want to watch movies are soldiers of fortune, try Dark of the Sun starring Rod Taylor or The Dogs of War featuring Christopher Walken.
I especially liked The Dogs of War, although book again was better than the film. Another mercenary film that is fun to watch is The Wild Geese.
I didn’t like TWG as much as I would have liked to, though I wasn’t particularly impressed by the novel, either. Mind you, the movie had a great cast, which included Richard Burton, Richard Harris, Roger Moore, Stewart Granger, and Hardy Krüger.
Yep, I loved it for the cast not as much for the plot.
Hardy Krüger, I think, is especially underappreciated actor, also a genuine war hero in his own right. For those unaware of his story, he served in SS, was ordered to execute prisoners, refused, was sentenced to death, luckily the order was rescinded. He then deserted and lived in hiding until the end of the war. After the war he frequently played a Nazi officer (he had the perfect looks and stature) one of his roles was as a commander of an SS Panzer division in One Bridge Too Far (except that the historical name of the commander was changed at the request of the actual veteran commander who did not want to be associated with Nazis, later in war that commander refused to sacrifice his unit in a suicide counter attack and was close to court marshal). One of Kruger’s last roles was the portrayal of Ervin Rommel in an 80s TV miniseries.

And the name of the street the buses were stranded on? Summerville!
Especially the trackless trolley busses. Was in Vancouver when they had a major (for them) snow. A trolley could not get any grip going up hill and the one behind it was stuck there because it couldn’t go around.
