…in West Side Story, Spielberg literally went woke for broke — down to long stretches of Spanish dialogue with no English subtitles, and his painful justification for it: “I felt that subtitling the Spanish was disrespectful to the second language of this country,” Spielberg said. “It would make English the dominant language, because then there would be two being spoken: the English by the characters speaking and the English that would [be written] underneath the spoken Spanish words.” It also helped convince potential moviegoers to avoid the picture like the plague.

    1. I agree. He had a promising start more than 40 years ago but started losing it in the mid-’80s. The only thing he did since that time that I grew to like was Jurassic Park and it took me 2 or 3 movies to actually enjoy it.

      One of the downsides of being an unlikeable bitter loner is that when I go to the pub… Hang on, let me Covid that sentence… Back when I used to go out to the pub (ask your parents about the Old Normal, Millennial) I would often end up alone and just basically chilling.

      During this time I ended up watching a lot of movies on the corner TV without any sound, which means you have no verbal or musical clues as to what you are meant to be feeling at the time. This means you have only the direction and acting to attempt to tell you the story.

      Jaw with the sound turned off is an amazing movie!

      A lot of his other stuff? There is a fine line between ‘heartwarming’ and ‘call an ambulance, I have chest pains!’

  6. I often run the English subtitles on old movies so can understand the dialogue better. Does that mean I am disrespecting English?

    1. Why is that?
      I do the same thing and usually only the movies that have been made in the last 20 years.
      Are they mixing the audio differently? Do you have to have a theater level sound system?

      1. I’ve seen many of the movies on the list, at least the ones made before 2000, thanks to YouTube and Turner Classic Movies.

        Some belong in the “so bad they’re good” department, being unintentionally hilarious in their dreadfulness and because they were so ineptly made. (For example, anything directed by Ed Wood is bound to be laugh-out-loud funny, even though he never intended it to be. Plan 9 From Outer Space has become a cult favourite and it’s a guilty pleasure of mine.)

        Others, however, are complete and utter rubbish, being tasteless and without any artistic merit. See them once just to say that you did.

  12. One of the best things about the plandemic has been the huge @$$ kicking that Hollyweird has taken the last two years. I love the looks on the faces of big stars stuck doing Netflix productions and Chicom propaganda films. Like a deer in the headlights.

  13. When Shogun was originally broadcast, there were scenes in which only Japanese was spoken, but no sub-titles. That made it hard to figure out what was going on and, of course, vital bits of the story could go missing.

    It was re-broadcast nearly 3 years later and translation was provided, making it much easier to follow.

    Personally, I prefer subtitles over dubbing as I like to hear the original language. Also, one can sometimes tell subtle details about the conversation by the manner of expression, even without having it translated.

    1. Shogun had lots of non-Japanese characters. Though they all spoke English in the movie, the main character Blackthorne would have been the only native-English speaker. To be historically accurate, the others would have been speaking Portuguese, Spanish or Dutch (languages that Blackthorne could speak)

      1. Indeed. The ship and crew were Dutch (except for Anjin-san, of course) and the clergy were, as I recall, either Spanish or Portuguese.

    2. I’m with you on the subtitles, B A. Hubby and I started watching “Squid Game” but gave up after two episodes. It wasn’t because we didn’t enjoy it; it was the dubbing. Subtitles would have been much better. You are so right about the subtleties. Much gets lost in translation.

        That’s never been a problem for me. Then again, many modern directors assume that the audiences are cultural illiterates and intellectually bereft.

        That’s never been a problem in opera, either. Many houses now use surtitles.

          Not a problem for me either. The only time I dislike them is when I’m watching something on TV and the subtitles are over-written by the stations logo or scrolled advertising. It’s like they don’t pay attention.

  14. Too funny. What doesn’t get mentioned is that the film was banned in multiple Middle Eastern countries because one of the film’s character is a binary, non binary, transgender or whatever the hell they call themselves these days.

  17. In a parallel universe somewhere there is no bed-wetting over the fact that most of the black actors in Black Panther do not come from Africa and certainly not from the fictional country of Wakanda where there is actual electricity.

    There is a huge petition to not kill-off the central character T’Challa played by (the most excellent but now dead actor) Chadwick Boseman.

    Big petition but no mention of the fact that Mr. Boseman was born and raised in South Carolina (which would make him a deplorable or at least a red neck). Again, respects to Boseman because he played the character well, but he sure wasn’t from Africa.

    See, it’s not good enough to portray Blacks in a positive light. You must also depict them accurately – or not.

  18. This woke mess of Spielberg’s is running the studio way into the red. It was estimated to cost $100 million to produce and another $100 million to promote. The first weekend the receipts were only about $10 million.

    1. It sounds like another Heaven’s Gate, directed by Michael Cimino. It’s been said that it was the movie that killed MGM by nearly bankrupting it.

        1. I’ve seen both and the 4-hour version didn’t impress me. There were too many plot holes that didn’t make sense. Then again, I’ve never been impressed by Cimino as a director.

          1. I guess we’ll have to disagree but, for me, the roller rink and skating fiddler scene was almost worth the price of admission all by itself. Its length and deliberate pacing were a turn off to many. It’s definitely not an action packed, super hero thriller. To be fair, many critics have changed their minds about it.

            A slight correction on the studio. Heaven’s Gate was made by United Artists, which was acquired by MGM at around the time the movie was released. MGM itself was in rough shape:

            I often try to give a movie I didn’t like at first a second chance, but, try as I might, when it was shown on TCM a few years ago, my opinion didn’t change. I found it tediously long, a movie which should have been, at most 3 hours long, stretched into 4. (That was one of my beefs with Cimino’s previous movie The Deer Hunter.)

            Cimino’s reputation was damaged as a result. His next movie Year of the Dragon wasn’t well-received, either, partly for its depiction of Asians. I saw it and thought it was simply a lousy film.

RKO Pictures, the studio that put “It’s a Wonderful Life” and many other movies like “The Bells of St. Mary’s”, “Gunga Din” “Citizen Kane” and every Disney movie prior to the 1950s went out of business because they made a number of movies that did not make any money…yet these modern studios are able to still make awful movies.

  24. If Steven Spielburgh really wanted to respect Spanish speakers, he would have subtitled the English speakers with Spanish Subtitles and Spanish with English Subtitles.

    We have public TV PSA commercials asking businesses to turn on captions. One reason is helps non-English speakers learn English.

      My mother once told me about the Hollywood movies that were shown in Germany after the end of WW II. Many of them were subtitled and, often, there was a slight delay in the reaction by some people in the audiences. Those who understood English got the jokes right away. The rest had to wait a few seconds for the translation before laughing.

      I saw it on commercial TV a number of years ago and I was wondering just what all the fuss was about. Highly over-rated.

      I initially liked Close Encounters, but the movie didn’t age well for me.

  26. I was invited to watch a movie over the holiday. ‘Power of the Dog’.

    It was a duster so I thought I could handle it.
    The movie started with the usual warnings: violence, animal cruelty sexuality.

    It had all that it warned of but the sexuality it said it had was – you guessed it, homosexuality.

    My gay meter started up early on and as the story unfolded it only proved what I knew was coming.

    I excused myself about half way through and left.
    My hosts were as embarrassed as I was. They were taken in by the fraud as well.

    I could care less if your queer. I have no interest in your issues and I’d be mad as hell if I was sucked in at a theater and paid for this crap.

      Often, when I hear of a certain movie that I’ve never seen before, I look it up on that website. I read the negative comments and, often, I’ve found them to be quite accurate, considering them to be a forewarning.

      The movie’s directed by Jane Campion. I’ve seen some of her earlier movies, such as The Piano, and I didn’t like any of them.
