    1. Roadhouse, I was a student radical in the 1960s, way back then, and bought Mr. Hoffman’s book. I put the book to good use during my poverty years. (My politics started drifting right from the mid-1970s on).

      I lent the book to my late father, a conservative and a higher-up in the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He laughed and laughed, and loved the book. Much of the book, he said, came from old tricks hobos would do decades and decades before Mr. Hoffman. All of this was in the 1960s, before homelessness and addictive drugs took hold.

    Although he was given top billing, Flynn had a supporting role. It’s an early attempt at a “we’re all doomed” flick. It’s about saving elephants and even has a bit of an anti-nuclear weapons twist.

      I noticed that while I was working on my Ph. D. If getting a doctorate had anything to do with talent, intelligence, or hard work, many universities would have to close because they can’t find enough qualified professors.

      As for getting author credit, it was customary to add the names of anybody who made a “contribution”, even if it was a piece of information resulting from a brief conversation. A lot of crap artists were given joint authorship for doing next to nothing. Not doing so could be hazardous to one’s career prospects, if you know what I mean.

      And people wonder why academic research consists of a lot of “publish or perish”.

  23. Was talking with my son yesterday and learned of a couple of ongoing developments in the airline industry:

    We all know that we should put our cell phones in airplane mode when flying, i.e. turn off the cell service, because it may interfere with the aircraft’s avionics. What’s happening now is that 5G towers on he ground are interfering with radar altimeters. The 5G towers operate on a frequency directly adjacent to that of the radar altimeter. Pilots are now required to report all anomalous readings of the RA so that a map can be made of locations where that instrument cannot be trusted.

    The current mandatory retirement age for airline pilots is 65 and it wasn’t that long ago when it was 60. With the shortage of pilots, there are now discussions about allowing pilots past that age to continue flying, albeit not as pilot in command. Basically they would fly right seat as a first officer, likely with a junior captain to provide the captain with the benefit of the senior pilot’s experience.
