I’m A Twenty Year Truck Driver, I Will Tell You Why America’s “Shipping Crisis” Will Not End
Think of going to the port as going to WalMart on Black Friday, but imagine only ONE cashier for thousands of customers. Think about the lines. Except at a port, there are at least THREE lines to get a container in or out. The first line is the ‘in’ gate, where hundreds of trucks daily have to pass through 5–10 available gates. The second line is waiting to pick up your container. The third line is for waiting to get out. For each of these lines the wait time is a minimum of an hour, and I’ve waited up to 8 hours in the first line just to get into the port.

Merry Christmas, everyone.
Third World distribution. D.Y.I.
No problem, we’ve got this covered:
We’re going to overstock the shelves and fine the cashier.
I believe he is partially right, but he seems to have been schooled in “Government involvement = good, capitalism = bad”. Sure, companies will cash in by charging extra for premium service, but once they are making that extra cash they will also want to maximize those profits by facilitating quicker turn-over. Make hay while the sun shines because if one company doesn’t do it another one will. I think the less that government is involved the quicker things will get resolved.
Given that the bulk of the problem is concentrated in California, I have to question whether they are sufficiently intelligent to take advantage of that opportunity. Less government involvement? You wish.
Ships can literally transit the Panama Canal and get to Texas or Florida faster than they can unload in California. With the new canal Panamax is less of a constraint.
Sounds like another narrative being pushed to get the public begging for more govt control of transportation and shipping when what we need is less.
Show me the LINES of trucks waiting to get in or out of the Port of Long Beach. I’ll wait … dum dum de dum dum dum … seriously … there are plenty of intrepid media types just waiting to pounce on this story. I’ll wait for the video of trucks lined up for miles … dum dum de dum dum dum …
I’m still waiting.
This story may have been true at one time or another, but it’s NOT true NOW. It has nothing to do with NOW. No, that would be CA’s (and the EPA’s) new diesel truck regulations. How much longer will CA (and the entire media) be able to deny the TRUTH?
What we are seeing here is what happens when the working-class white men who make everything work decide that they’re done being screwed dry, and retire or simply quit in disgust.
Shelves will be full again when truckers get paid a living wage, and Karen has to actually pay the full cost of getting a cat toy from Shanghai to her doorstep.
Her cat will have fewer toys. The cat will live.
But her pussy will still be unsatisfied!
there are a low number of “cranes” because there is finite amounts of space to operate them in, and a finite number of operators.
also the ports of LA and Long Beach have a long history, and are union controlled, so there is no quick solution, unless you plan to shut the port down for a couple of years while you build a completely new design to change how it’s all handled
Stupid question. Why was does all this stuff have to go into only one port?
Because no other city wants to become … “The LBC” Which is to say … ‘Compton’. Which is to say The Ghetto
Remember Monday Night Football from Seattle a week or so ago? In the overhead shots of the stadium you can see a marine container terminal in the background. NO ship docked, NO cranes moving, NO truck activity, completely quiet.
In a related story … The Port of Oakland is mostly silent … currently operating at 50% capacity. The reason given by the Port spokespeople? “Because shippers wanted to save time by directing shipments to LA”. Seriously. That’s the reason their spokespeople are giving. The REAL reason? Diesel regulations.

Our beloved Raiders split town, when will the A’s be next???
As good as GONE! Who would want to stay in Oakland … with a communist mayor and Marxist Commissions, Boards, and public interest groups?
I’ve refused to subject myself to the fustercluck of the Ghetto Oakland Coliseum … so I have not seen an A’s game since they broke the win streak. And the proposed “Green” stadium which is semi-close to downtown (not really) where fans would have to walk 10 blocks of the MEANEST streets in Oakland … cradle of The Black Panthers … is an absolute non-starter for this Oakland born A’s fan.
I assure you … I will attend MORE games in Las Vegas than I will in the ‘new’ “Green” Oakland stadium. It’s a safer and easier commute to Vegas than to Oakland for this Contra Costa resident.
You asked.
I don’t blame you, even Bob Melvin left. I live no where near Oakland, but an A’s fan since ’72 and Raiders since ’76. Sure hurts though.
Me:
Raiders: since Blanda, Stabler, Warren Wells … about 1967 … I was actually watching the Heidi Bowl … arrrrggghhhh
A’s: since 1968 … the year they moved from KC, although back then I was more of a Giants (Willy Mays) Fan. I can remember sitting in my grandfathers patio listening to Bobby Bonds FIRST at bat in the majors … a Grand Slam Home Run
Think how much more fun the roads will become when all those Haitians and Afghans are driving trucks after a quick training period.
Great. Truck drivers from nations where life is cheap …
Training? In Canada if they were licensed to drive truck in another country, they automatically qualify to drive in Canada.
Now that I’m driving to and from my house in B. C., I’m quite sure I tangled with some of them on the highway.
my question when does anyone in the supply train pay for anything, e.g. when does the supplier get paid? When does the shipper get paid? When does the carrier get paid? when do the banks get to repossess anything in the delivery lineup? Who suffers the most?
Is their anyone capable of providing a list of what is waiting for delivery off the coast of the USA?
Leaving aside the bullshit claim that the middles of the Atlantic and pacific are off the coast. Can anyone make a decision to send the carriers back until there is room. They, the carriers will keep sending and billing to make their economies look buoyant
