The vision of Public Works having to contract for chopping all flag poles in half on all federal buildings (and those on crown corps and agencies, maybe suppliers too) across the country was delicious. Of course, it would have to be sole sourced to a Liberal-friendly company, as November 11 is coming up fast. This would be a great green jobs federal initiative, typical of all other green jobs programs ever proposed.
As for the raison d’être for lowering flags:
1) My ancestors received crown grants of land from Upper Canada, governed by Britain in the 1820-40 era, in an area now occupied by American Mohawk “immigrants” from the U.S. circa 1792 and before. Those folks deserve no apologies nor reparations from me, a 6th generation Canadian who did not even vote until 1968. In fact, many spokespersons from the indigenous and settler immigrant “not very first nations folks” are quite well-educated, thanks to Canadian taxpayers.
2) Conrad Black is correct in saying that the Truth and Reconciliation Report recommendations did not fit the report. The recommendations were, in my view, basically an NDP manifesto, adopted by Trudeau wholesale, without much approval from anyone.
3) No one knows who is in the graves near Kamloops. A Catholic Church in Canada would never have buried children who died from communicable diseases in mass graves (media myth). It was most likely a community Catholic cemetery that had wooden crosses, which deteriorate in a warm desert-like climate. As well, all schools were then fairly strict for all children. My 1913-born mom spoke about wearing uniforms, being scared of teachers and rote memory learning, at her public school in fashionable Mount Royal, Calgary. Lots of her friends died too. Talk to a few Quebecers who went to parochial schools in Quebec – they were tough. Yes politicians sometimes made bad policies, but reparations are simply another crap tool to indulge people grandfathered under the truly deficient Indian Act.
