Climate change cancels the wind turbine;
Industry experts are warning that climate change may have caused wind speeds in Europe to plummet this year in news that threatens to drive energy prices even higher.
Long labelled as a saviour of the energy industry, wind farms have cropped up across the continent in recent years and have been billed a low-cost, renewable and dependable source of power…
…Experts are blaming a growing phenomenon known as ‘global stilling’ – whereby measurable wind speeds across the world’s continental surfaces have decreased by as much as 15 per cent since 1980.
Follow the science!

Or too many wind turbines sucking the energy out of the atmosphere?
That was my first thought: First Law of Thermodynamics.
How was that not in those computer models we model our lives on?
That was my first thought, how did they not see this coming? It’s a mystery.
My well-informed eco-opinion is that the Global Stilling is a result of Honeybee hive collapse. The lack of honeybee wing fluttering is throwing the entire earth out of balance.
William Shatner told me so … he could see it from space when he looked down on this great big beautiful blue orb (that we must all protect from Global Stilling)
Greg – If that is true it is probably a localized effect. The planet is so large that the windmills are like dust mites on an African elephant.
I think that Global Stilling is another observable benefit of global climate warming change.
Sounds like bullshit to me. It sounds to me like they’re making excuses for the lack of power from windmills.
It’s also possible that if there really is a lack of wind it’s being caused by the windmills. If a breeze blows across a field of windmills, the windmills suck the energy out of the air causing the wind speed to slow down. Maybe they are living the fruits of too many windmills?
Remarkable how the wind can be stilling, yet at the same time the frequency and intensity of storms and hurricanes and tornadoes and other weather events is so awful that we’re facing a climate emergency.
And the polar ice caps are melting meaning more atmospheric water, but we’ll see more desertification.
Kinetic energy in wind converted to electrical energy, therefore no wind.
Law of unintended consequences in action?
well, some of it does get converted to heat too, thus wind turbines cause global warming….
As a sailor, I have not noticed any major change in wind in southern Alberta, however I do notice when the wind really picks up the windmills have to shut down or they will self destruct. So we have a problem Houston, the windmills have limited range of effective wind they can operate in which is not quite as efficient as shoveling coal into a boiler to create steam. Damn climate change.
This is the most literal example of tilting at windmills ever recorded.
There is nothing Global Warming cannot do-it is even being blamed for a water system problem by the mayor in Iqualuit. Global warming makes the water taste of gasoline!
Climate Change: making experts dumber since Moby Dick was a minnow.
There is also very limited viable locations for the things. I went to a seminar sponsored by PEO presented by a Uof Guelph prof and wind advocate back in about 2008. He showed a map on Ontario and all current turbine locations. Even back then they had saturated all viable locations for wind turbines. Any new installations since then would have diminished output.
masters of the universe discover they are actually characters in a comic book.
The power available from wind is proportional to the cube of the speed. So a 15% reduction in wind speed drops the power output to 61%.
But I thought Climate Change was causing the winds to speed up?

Scientific American confused Climate Change with politicians. That giant sucking sound…
You’re not supposed to remember previous hyperbolic scare articles. Get with the program! We have always been at war with East Asia.
Oh no we’re running out of … wind?!
Needless to say solar is even worse. I do engineering consulting and work with a automotive tier 1 – the owner of which was an early adopter of the Chevy bolt/volt and the grift of installing solar panels on his factory roofs. He also wanted to self monitor how much power he was generating to compare to what the utility was telling him so he had his electricians and IT people develop a system to continuously monitor solar output. Part of my consult involved working with one of the IT guys and he stated it was amazing how little power was generated with a single fluffy cloud casting shade – you could follow the cloud from factory to factory with power dropping to 10%. If you stood outside you would still think it was sunny because light diffuses, but you need direct light to generate power. Bottom line, even on a relatively sunny day you would lose a lot of capacity.
“But …. but …. it said 300 Watts on the box …..!”
It couldn’t be they over-estimated the amount of wind available … or the efficiency of their machines … or the cost of implementation … no … the wind just disappeared.
The quantum of rent seeking bounty available to the wind proponents makes theocrats out of regular crooks, enough so that any noticeable failing of the most inherently unreliable energy source on the spectrum is caused by the unproven hypothesis justifying their near useless solution. It’s circular logic and for much of the Eloi and their favourite media, not a problem.
So the 4% of atmospheric carbon dioxide attributable to human activity now not only causes more heat and cold, more rain and more drought, more Antarctic ice and less arctic ice…it now also causes more hurricanes, cyclones, and tornadoes, but less wind where the turbines are?
Man, I just loooove government funded science. No matter what evidence progs need to justify the decisions they’ve made, government funded scientists will generate it on demand.
That’s how the Devil speaks.
humans occupy 6% of the land surface , 2% of the global surface. that includes all the farmland. not just cities . it a national geographic number , so likely a bit fat .
we really dont matter at all.
Hate is love, war is peace, 2+2 = 5.
Here’s another idea …
Every NEW wind factory is built on a site that has LESS wind than the one before it. Isn’t that the PRIMARY reason they didn’t build there first? All the WINDIEST locations were built out FIRST! Each succeeding wind factory is less suitable. Diminishing returns … not “Global,Stilling”
Thankfully the subsidies payments are the same.
Our green future.

The government does not give a fook about your literal, physical survival.

So if the wind has been demonstrably trending down for more than 40 years these asshats have only themselves to blame for their crap result.
It’s like building sand castles during a full moon and being surprised by the height of the tide.
Thank you, elected representatives.

If there were global stilling, God what a stupid expression, there would be fewer extreme weather events. The more contrasting the temperatures and humidity of weather fronts, the wilder things will get. The actual original green house theory from way back does actually predict the stupidly termed ‘ stilling ‘, but as so many have pointed out, where is all the extreme weather coming from then?
Fight Global Moaning!
I think global stilling must be a result of reduced moonshine.
