        I have never operated a drone (or RC car for that matter) so I have huge respect for his/her skill at maneuvering it through those spaces. I’m guessing some editing was also involved but, it too, was also very well done.

  4. Just out of curiosity, does one need to have a license or certification to operate a drone?

    Some 50 years ago, my father tinkered with radio control airplanes. Back then, the Department of Transport, which was responsible for that in those days, required that R/C hobbyists have a license for the frequencies they were operating on.

    Since then, the legislation has changed and that part of the spectrum (most of the channels being around 27 MHz) is now allocated for unlicensed use. That means that anyone can operate radio control models and go on the air with a citizen’s band (I think it’s officially called the General Radio Service here in Canada) rig without a certificate. (The only exception would be for those frequencies which fall in the amateur bands and one would need a ham callsign to use them.)

    I learned about all that in the past few months as I inherited my father’s R/C gear. I’ve been working on seeing if I can get his old tranmitter working again because it fell into disuse and, worse, it got wet when his basement flooded a few years ago.

      1. As I mentioned, 50 years ago, one needed a license to operate a radio control transmitter. I found some of my father’s old documents concerning that.

        Many of those frequencies are still allocated for that purpose, but a license is no longer required. I downloaded a copy of the applicable government regulation. From that, I found out that I can use my father’s transmitter, which is designed to operate in a channel just above 27 MHz.

        I understand that many R/C rigs nowadays transmit signals in the microwave band above 1 GHz. I’m not sure which parts of the spectrum has been set aside for hobby purposes.

      2. I think this would s one the f the things that needs regulation. If everyone can use radio signals with no regard for other people using radio signals, no one’s radios work at all. Better for all to have some sort of spectrum management system.

        1. It depends on the end use. Blocks of frequencies are allocated for specific purposes, often shared between two or more services, but they may be loosely regulated as there is little activity there.

          That may simply consist of a gentlemen’s agreement, as is the case now for the General Radio Service/citizen’s band and other license-exempt operation or be more specific as is the case for amateurs under the Radiocommunication Act and the associated regulations.

          When those frequencies are used more, the applicable legislation can be revised and become more specific as to which services can operate on them, the application, and which bands are reserved for those purposes.

    2. You need a license to operate a drone commercially. You do not need a license to operate a drone for personal fun – as long as you keep it in line-of-sight, away from your neighbor’s window and nowhere near an airport.

        2. When my father was an active R/C modeller, there was an unofficial club of local enthusiasts. We went to a field just outside town, well away from any residential area and far from the airport.

          It was given to understand that the planes could be considered a nuisance to residents and a hazard to low-flying aircraft. Oddly enough, one night, we noticed the control surfaces of one of the models jittering after it landed and all the radios switched off. I don’t think we ever found out what caused it, but it was likely an unauthorized signal, possibly from a spurious source or splatter from a neighbouring CB channel.

    5. You don’t need a license in the U. S. If you’re flying it recreationally (not making $$ off it) and the drone weighs less than 55 pounds.

  6. BC now has close to 90% vaccination rate for first dose in those over 12. we also have the highest cases in the country. The obvious conclusion here is that the program is working. As vaccination rates increase you would naturally expect case numbers to rise. Perfectly normal and sensible.

Tried googling but no results, so early this year there was a small article about a woman PHD published Internationally acclaimed expert on child transitioning who came out and said that with so many kids isolated and without the huge amount of peer pressure that a lot of children were changing their minds about transitioning. She of course was getting thoroughly whipped about it. And I can’t seem to find the articles again. Horrible with names so has anybody else remembered this or could point me to the right sources?
