Besides the $$$, there ‘s a larger issue as well: He’s a goalie. In general, a team will have the starter and the backup on the bench, and if they both go down there’s an emergency backup goalie ready to play for either team. It does happen every once in a while that they have to bring in the guy from the stands: The last time, I believe, was when the Maple Leafs’ Zamboni driver played a period and a half as a Carolina Hurricane.
If Hellebuyck can’t play because he has to suddenly sit out due to not being jabbed, the Jets may not have enough time to get a player from the minors to wherever they happen to be, so they’ve only got the one goalie and they’re going have to hope he doesn’t get hurt. Also, if he comes back from a road trip to the States, is he going to have to quarantine every time? If that’s the case, from what I understand of what’s going on in Canada in terms of cross-border quarantining these days he’d either just be playing games in Canada and the Jets would take road trips with the backup as the starter and a minor league goalie as the backup or they’d have to have the minor league goalie ready to go in advance every time the team comes back to Canada while he quarantines. Or the Jets carry three goalies at all times, which means they lose a forward or defenceman from the roster.
