  1. Wasn’t the whole idea of the self-driving car so that you could other things? Paperwork? Emails? Recharge the human batteries by catching up on some sleep so as to be more productive?

Guess the Adman will have to come up with a new slogan or directive to program the sheeple with.

    1. This reminds me of some of the things shown in the movie “The Minority Report” which was in 2005 if I remember correctly. It was a Tom Cruise movie (but was actually quite good) and Spielberg consulted futurologists to make sure he was portraying accurately what would happen in 20 to 30 years. The film showcased self-driving cars which could go superfast, it showcased flat screen TV’s the size of a living room wall, and it showcased bio-metrics, the most notably being the use of retinal scans as you walked through a shopping mall so that advertisements would be tailored to your specific needs (these were delivered either by billboards as you walked past or to your smart glasses, which allowed you to access the Internet).
I realized that much of the movie was prescient although the current actuality is slightly different (ie. specific ads are delivered to you on youtube based on your search questions).

    2. The whole idea of the self-driving and electric cars, is to make car ownership so expensive that only the wealthy can afford one. Limiting car ownership will slow the growth of the despised suburbs , and push working class and middle class back to the desired high density lifestyles. The higher the density of a population, the more left they vote.

But the cathedral doesn’t want to give up their own personal freedoms, and thus their engineering of the new society always leaves the elites as inconvenienced as little as possible.

It’s like the ban on hand held cell phones. The laws were written so politicians could continue their phone use while driving, through hands free technology. This, despite the science clearly demonstrating that cell phone distraction occurs in the brain, not the fingers.

So, it sucks to be you if you’re a single mom scraping by month to month in your old beater and have to call the babysitter.

      1. The #1 danger on our roadways is … distracted driving. It is not “speed”. It is not even DUI’s. But it is … distracted driving.

If I wanted to create the worst possible distraction to driving? I would place a GIANT TV screen on the car dashboard … then … make sure that EVERY operation of the automobile had to be viewed and worse … touched …on the screen.

The entire concept of the BIG SCREEN automobile is a FAIL from the start. If these BIG SCREEN automobiles are unable to drive themselves … then they should all be junked as “unsafe at any speed”

      1. BDFT….

Yea..!!! Like the one I took from FSJ to Prince George one night a few yrs ago. A drive at night in a total WhiteOUT Snow that will keep your rectal orifice clamped down like a VISE.

Don’t ask me how I happen to know that….

        1. Yup. I haven’t been through the Pine Pass for more than 40 years, but I remember it as being a tricky drive even when the weather was good.

  2. News Alert!!

Most stupid-ass drivers don’t pay enough attention to the road, regardless of the type of vehicle they are driving. Three years ago, I was rear-ended by RCMPigs in an SUV because they were both staring at their computer screen… the exact same idiots supposedly responsible for controlling distracted driving. Oh, the irony.

Also, WTF, do people get tested before getting a license anymore? And to that end, do they now teach drivers to follow 10 ft behind the car in front so you’re not wasting highway? The 2 second rule works perfectly at all speeds…. USE IT!

Also, also, I find it near impossible to believe that Musk’s lawyers, in a world requiring never-ending silly consumer warning stickers on products, ever allowed him to refer to an enhanced cruise control system as an “Autopilot”. Extremely irresponsible marketing.

    1. Like electric vehicles NEED a warning NOT to park near anything that you care about.
Reminds me of ‘spontaneous combustion’…whoooom…in flames.

  3. Love my stick shift sporty can. If some one ever put a computer in the driver’s seat, I’d just burn the sucker.

    1. Gym

Yep….I’ve got an 06 GMC diesel.
      No Internet – Perfect.
      No OnStar – Perfect.
But it does have what I consider an Excellent Safety Item:

AUTO ON HEADLIGHTS….and that is something I see many many Much Newer Vehicles WITHOUT…?
This Vehicle, built such that one can do most maintenance items themselves..?? ABSOLUTELY. Just rolled 600,000kms (600, 527), “runs like a deer” and I definitely plan on keeping it.

EV’s….?? LMAO…have yet to see one on the Rd at -30C

      1. My fine Bavarian Automobile has an auto-on headlight setting … dialed it to that setting and that’s where it has stayed since 2014. It also has rain sensor windshield wipers. Love that feature too.

What do I hate? The car has no dipstick. I have to scroll through some auto maintenance program then wait 5 minutes while the car self measures the oil. Puhleeze, I’d rather do it myself.

  4. We put driver monitor sensors in haul trucks at a mine after several of them went off the road and rolled.
The system monitors the drivers eyes and shakes the seat and sounds an alarm.

We haven’t had a roll over or truck go off the road in the last 4 years.
    They work very well.

If the driver looks out the window or at his music radio or gauges for too long it alarms.

    1. I have personally had a few drowsy-driving incidents. I would happily add that feature to my automobile

  5. In the 20 some years from the rapid onset of cellular phone use in Canada, from a time when there were a few 1000, to the present time when it seems the only people without a cellular phone are my 87 and 92 years old parents (my dad is “against” cellular phones, he’s an old Sask-Tel guy) … the number of accidents / deaths has been in steady decline within Canada. If you extrapolate the additional drivers into the totals, the numbers have fallen by about half, and I don’t know if the Chinese flu is the reason this hasn’t been updated in +2 years.
I’m not saying, cellular phones have reduced the number of accidents and deaths…
but I doubt they are the boogie man the FB people use as examples every day.

    1. Yes marc, I believe you can contribute that decrease to COVID. Here in BC, our socialist state insurance company(ICBC)dropped my rate by a whopping 25%, not to mention also receiving two refund cheques in the past year. Miles driven, and thus accidents; are both apparently way down here.

Anyone ignorant enough to text and drive should have their license taken away. I am sick to death of sharing the roads with oblivious, irresponsible, narcissistic asshole drivers.

      1. The decline in accidents and deaths, has been near constant (and in each year but one) since 1999.

Prior to lane change tech being in many new cars as well… or the Chinese flu.

It’s almost inexplicable, yet I doubt Transport Canada accepts underreporting from their provincial brethren.

        1. Interesting…. thanks for the link.

One wonders if they track non-injury accidents, also. Are the overall number of accidents actually decreasing, or just the numbers of dead and injured resulting from those accidents?

Maybe those decades of safety innovations are finally paying off. I have long- wondered which of the likes of daytime headlights, 3rd brake lights, multiple airbags, ABS, ert, etc, etc were ever proven to make a substantial difference. Ha, how much low-speed parking carnage has been reduced by back-up cams and auto parallel-parking systems alone?
