The Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony, delayed a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, drew 16.7 million viewers for NBC on Friday, the smallest audience for the network broadcast in the past 33 years, according to data from the Comcast-owned NBCUniversal on Saturday.
The TV audience dropped 37% from the Rio de Janeiro opening ceremony in 2016, when 26.5 million people watched, and 59% from 2012, when 40.7 million people watched the London opener. The Tokyo ratings factored in both the live broadcast early Friday morning and a primetime re-airing.

You probably meant that as a joke, but I really am waiting for that. It will be a train wreck. I would like to see absolute domination by trannies in the women’s events because then they have to perform all kinds of virtual gymnastics trying to explain why it is fair. And, simply, it isn’t fair. I’ll be disappointed if they don’t dominate. I want Olympic and World records shattered so that they can’t be touched by biological females in any future events. It will force the issue and create turmoil. And, likely, it will force female athletes to take a stand as opposed to keeping their heads down to avoid persecution.

Coverage that is patriotic pablum, the plethora of judged “sports” with many politically determined outcomes, lingering doubts about who has the better cheating in performance enhancement substances, and the absurd spectacle of men in women’s events. There are Olympic games happening? Anyone I have spoken to in the past week is only vaguely aware they are occuring and could care less. I gave up on them in 1988 when figure skating was finally exposed for the farce it is – egregious bias by the judges. The games are nothing but a huge waste of taxpayers money. If I remember right, the mayor of Vancouver during their games made the inane comment that it hadn’t cost the taxpayers any money. Of course he was referring to Vancouverites. The rest of us had to pay for it. Time to put a fork in it.
Olympics, meh. Everything else goes on hiatus: no NASCAR, Indy, or F1 this past weekend. Hubby and I had to talk, for pity’s sake! Oh, well. On the upside, we read and made a Christmas in July turkey dinner for ourselves.
The last Olympics I watched were in Vancouver. They were lots of fun (especially the Curling) and the time difference meant one could follow a lot of it live. Now, I couldn’t care less. Why they even went ahead is beyond me. The powers that be would have us believe we are in the midst of a pandemic. Who in their right minds stages global games during a pandemic?!
I turned it on last night for the first time and watched a 13 year girl win Gold in skateboarding for being the only one not to splat trying a trick sliding down a Bannister. She then went home for her afternoon nap. The commentor said she has left her mark on history….. Next event Beach volleyball…… I’m really surprised Grand Theft Auto isn’t in there.

I watched that as well, after being invited over to eldest daughters place for dinner last night. Why thats in the Olympics is quite beyond me… empty Stadiums throughout, I’m sure the Japanese Taxpayers are simply “thrilled”.
Also caught a couple of rugby games – in a massive 100,000 seat..?? EMPTY Stadium. And like asians around the planet, Any shot of Tokyo – not one person maskless.

Good. NBCU paid huge for broadcast rights (over $7.5 billion)… dismal viewing numbers translates into dismal ad revenue for those shows that are on before and after Olympic broadcasts.

TV ratings are dropping for everything. I haven’t watched a tv in a decade, my kids don’t even know it exists. When the older generation does off broadcast/cable tv will be as relevant as the telegraph system.
Perhaps, when you spend the last 2 years telling your citizens that they should be ashamed of their country, said citizens feel less inclined to tune in and cheer for their countrymen.

Huh. I was expecting “full contact America’s Cup yacht racing” from Return of the Killer Tomatoes. Best use of a cannon in a modern movie that I saw in the 80s.
My experience as a cinema buff is incomplete. I’ve yet to see either of the killer tomato movies.
I can’t say that I blame you. Camp, definitely. Don’t look at them as art. I liked 2 much more than 1. Though they never did make “The Killer Tomatoes Go To France” as they threatened at the end of #2 (after the Carrot commandos had machinegunned the late night movie cast).
