  1. How is it that for roughly seven decades, GM has been producing really reliable diesel-electric locomotives, but they can’t manage to achieve such success with hybrid cars?

    1. Because they arent trying to use batteries to store electricity.

There is only a couple at the front to start the big generator. The generator runs all the time to power everything else.

    2. Diesel electric locomotives don’t have huge battery packs. All the energy is contained in the diesel. A big diesel engine powers a generator which in turn, powers the elctric motors to the wheels. No battery, no problem.

  2. Along with a recall GM is offering to buy them back from purchasers which is costly I’m sure but the Ford Pinto lawsuits demonstrated that jury awards can almost break the bank of manufacturers who know the product is defective but choose to ignore the problem.

  3. On CBC’s Market Place, this weekend, there was a look see at Kia and Hyundai cars catching fire and they were just the regular gas driven ones. The car makers did not look good in that episode.

    1. Gasoline fuel is intended to be burned, which fact tends to make users mindful of the potential hazard and they accept it and the necessity for precautions against it. An electric battery powered vehicle isn’t supposed to burn anything, let alone itself, so when they catch fire it’s more shocking.

    2. CanuckGuy – The CBC broadcast a documentary about gasoline cars catching fire at a time when there is an epidemic of EVs catching fire. Nothing was said about EVs catching fire? They are trying to save their narrative. Don’t worry about EVs, gasoline powered cars catch fire too.

  4. Samsung is working on a solid state battery stating it will all but eliminate fires and improve overall performance…they say maybe ready for production by 2025…
Word of advice to anyone wanting (why one wants to regress is beyond me) to go battery car…assuming 2025 start wait until 2030 to have some performance data.

Everyone needs to understand that the electric (battery driven really, I hate to describe these machines as electric) transportation is an idea based on environmental ideology, it is not market driven by either demand or the more natural improvement breakthrough on mobile transportation created by capitalism. It is forced on car builders by big globalist governments

    1. Not just environmental ideology (theology) but incentivized by the dead hand of governments with a defined schedule to ban all alternative fueled vehicles. IOW fascist mandates.

    2. Neither is the technology driven by thermodynamics.

Much more energy is put into battery technology from the raw materials mining, manufacturing and repetitive charging than is-extracted from it. Also there are no commercially viable recycling processes for ev batteries for large scale replacement of ic cars

      1. Greg…

Yea…one look at how they “recycle” Wind Turbine Blades is a perfect example of that.
I recently drove through the Pincher Creek area of South Western Alberta….WAs Absolutely Floored at the massive numbers of these monstrosities…has Completely destroyed the vista of the Eastern Rockies. I would bet there are some 600+ 1-2 mw turnbines operating ….sorta in the area. proving at best ~ 2% of Albertas requirement.

JUNK. All of it. And damned glad I drive a Diesel.

      2. Gentlemen … you are failing to understand that the goal of electric cars isn’t to save the planet from that dastardly Co2. Nope. The purpose is simple … to keep the air in Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, San Mateo et.al. clean. So long as the families with 0.6 children (ave.) can send their fraction of a child to schools where the air isn’t fouled by those horrible ICE vehicles … then it will all have been ‘worth it’. Hence … all of you plebes must be FORCED out of your ICE vehicle. Because you are thwarting the goal of “pristine” air for all the Palo Alto residents suffering from multiple chemical sensitivity. Your ICE automobile is harming children of the (self described) elites.

And all the new battery-powered cars will be charged by clean, green, windmills and solar panels … even if the entire coastal mountain range needs to be clear cut and 100k acres covered in wind towers. The Volvo e-car advertisement shows that the wind contraptions are more beautiful than trees. And the coal-fired power plants can be located downwind in East Palo Alto where life is cheap and the children are more likely to be shot than suffer the horrors of breathing EPA-declared-dangerous particulate laden air.

Battery powered cars are primarily necessary to … save the children … who are dying of ICE-induced asthma. Ohhhhhh mommmmaaa … the inner city children ovvvvvv cullllller … the underserved children … are disproportionately impacted by your racist ICE vehicle. Yes … driving an ICE automobile is Racist … and environmental “equity” and eco-justice demands an end to ICE autos. Oh! And it is MOSTLY cisgendered drivers who don’t have menstrual periods who drive ICE cars (to acknowledge another of Sunday’s post). White men in ICE F150’s MUST BE STOPPED. Gavin Newsom does not identify as either male, or Caucasian… hence he has called for an END to ICE vehicles … because he carrrrreeees about the (fractional) chillllldren of (West) Palo Alto

Don’t get me started on motor vehicle emission control systems. The reason they were inflicted on the automotive industry was for the same purpose.

Ever since I inherited my Dodge TurboRam, I kept getting “check engine” warning lights. Since I didn’t want to take a chance, I took the vehicle to a dealership and had it checked. Often, it was simply fixed with a software reset.

Now that I’ve been driving more frequently to and from my house with my truck, I was plagued with that warning several times. One time, it was traced to a faulty oxygen sensor. However, it didn’t take long after I’d take my truck out on the highway and there would be the usual “Bing!” and the same warning light would come on.

One dealership finally offered to take out the emission control system as the problem I had was a common occurrence with other vehicles. It cost me a lot of money, but I haven’t had that problem since then.

In addition, I burn considerably less fuel without the ECS and I no longer have to horse around with having to buy DEF.

        2. Not far from wrong. The goal is to reduce mobility and keep people inside densified cities and travelling if required on crowded and poorly maintained public transit. Only elites will be able to travel by ev vehicles in Chaika lanes.
Revolutionaries have long been the spoiled progeny of elites. In the future, and right now, their radicalism will be controlled by social media and their social credit score.

  5. Saving the planet one incinerated electric car at a time ! ( big big sarcasm ! )

    1. How committed to virtue-signaling are these folks, if they can’t tolerate the occasional car fire and resultant home burning down? I’m certain they’ll see the risk as a badge of courage. “I’m so committed to reducing carbon emissions, that I’ll take the chance my home will burn. That’ll show ’em.” Errrr…and just how much carbon dioxide did your burning house emit?

      Calgary RUG: $ 1.419 /Litre
Salmon Arm RUG: $1.399… Via Gas Buddy
Diesel in Salmon arm: ~ 1.30/Litre

      Diesel in Calgary $1.184 / Litre Co-op
Costco Diesel $1.149. / Litre Via recent fillings

For our American Friends: Multiply prices X 3.78 Litres per Gallon for price – then take that and multiply by .80 (CAD – USD Exchange rate), to it for actual USD Gallon pricing.

      1. So by the math Calgary Gas is a bit cheaper than my local Union 76 gas station …

        Calgary: $ 4.26/gal. ($US)
Lafayette, CA: $ 4.58/gal. (Cheap 87 Octane Gas)

      2. $1.17 a litre on the reserve without a status card and something like 20 cents less with one. For people who are so oppressed they sure aren’t at the pumps. Between the cheap gas and cheapest smokes ( I dont smoke but 15 bucks for a carton of 10 packages i might start) there’s always a steady stream of settlers lining the indigenous pockets.

        1. On a recent trip to the Okanogan, the reserve on the west side had signs stating that seasonal visitors were not welcome. Three pot shops per km was typical. Who are they catering to?

          1. If the white man STOLE your lands, and “kidnapped” your children to “educate” them in Residential Schools … you’d be prescribed “medicinal” marijuana too! And then, when you learned that ground penetrating radar “identified” hundreds and hundreds of “mass graves” … you’d need some dope to mellow the harsh

            Right?

  6. Electric cars are about only 3 % of all cars, the rest are mostly gasoline and some are diesel.

yet electric cars seem to catch on fire more than gasoline cars.

if anyone has numbers, percentages, i d love to see them.

    Thank you.

  7. It’s not just the numbers of electric vehicle fires, it’s the intensity, and the problems extinguishing the fires. A typical car fire requires one fire engine and less than an hour to extinguish; an electric vehicle fire requires 2-3 fire engines, and 4-5 hours to extinguish. And the water required for the EV fire is excessive; there MUST be an external source (hydrant); the internal tanks on fire engines are woefully inadequate. (In the linked article, a single EV fire required 28,000 gallons of water to put it out.)

  8. I predict this folly will be a total failure, much as the Big Canadian gun grab.
It may take some time but ultimately our elected morons will see the light when their cushy jobs are in jeopardy.

Hahahahahahahhahaha! Like that’s ever going to happen.

    2. Yes Ralph, they will “see the light” about the same time they are being placed in the guillotine..
      Otherwise never.
If they really are elected, for I have zero confidence in “Elections Canada” or any other wing of the Kleptocracy.

The faster Buffalo, tears itself out of the ruin of Confederated Can Ahh Duh,the better.
Imagine the freedom and joy of using our own oil resources as fuel and the pleasure of making the Eastern Bastards pay through the nose or freeze in the dark..
For a crisis is coming, created by these same idiots and their unreliable energy.

  9. With the Ford Pinto at least you knew to break out the marshmallows if you got rear-ended, it wasn’t a random ‘middle of the night’ marshmallow roast…

That was decades ago, the only fires between then and now were the media’s fake pick up truck fires. The media are good arsonists.

If these fires came from any other product the media would be blowing this up.
