Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Inflation is rapidly escalating in Canada too. So much so that even Statistics Canada can’t hide it anymore….
https://financialpost.com/news/economy/canadian-consumer-prices-climb-at-fastest-pace-in-a-decade
“Consumer prices in Canada climbed in April at the fastest rate in a decade, outpacing estimates and potentially fueling concerns that the country, much of which is still in lockdown, is entering a period of persistent inflation.”
“On a monthly basis, inflation rose 0.5 per cent versus the 0.2 per cent economists were expecting.”
Chris right now the current government lie is inflation is about 3.4%. Make that 13.4% and you will be close to the real number.
yes . stats can is lying , with food up 25% , lumber 100. gas 20 , who are you going to believe this government or your lying wallet
I’m guessing inflation is the highest it’s ever been, 20 – 25 %. Lock in that mortgage long-term. Interest will soon be 20 – 25% or more. Stagflation extraordinary. Pay people trillions not to work? They’ve had better ideas.
come on scar, I was trying to be conservative but you are probably right 20 to 25%. I can see my retirement funds shrink as I type.
This one is too close to real to be funny:
https://babylonbee.com/news/kids-demand-in-person-learning-so-they-wont-have-to-keep-explaining-math-to-their-parents
I thought it was bad during my time at Armpit College. I had students fresh out of high school who had next to no grasp of simple algebra and trigonometry, subjects I was expected to be familiar with when I was a freshman undergraduate.
I quit AC early in the last decade. I shudder to think what it must be like now.
I went to a bank teller to take out $100 in June 2018. I was handed five $20 bills. I handed two $20 bills back and asked for $5 bills instead. The young man had to pull out his phone, open a calculator app, and type in 20 x 2, followed by 40 divide by 5. I was almost literally speechless after that (I was barely able to say “Thank you” as I left.)
Chris; I had a similar experience Tim’s a while back. Ordered a coffee at the drive through paid with a 20 got the 20 back plus change for the 20. Told the girl at the window she had made a mistake. She got angry and told me very forcefully that she did not make mistakes….. Had free coffee for the rest of the week. …..Steve O
The young (23-ish) bank teller was a very polite young man who spoke perfect English. He just had no idea what arithmetic was. I am MUCH MORE concerned that a bank saw fit to employ this young man and that our so-called education system felt he was qualified to move on past GRADE FIVE, much less GRADUATE high school.
Bank machines can’t do it all –getting a large mixture of 5s, 10s, 20s, 50s etc @ teller? Problem is, is that they can’t count out loud in E-n-g-l-i-s-h.
I’ve noticed in recent years that Canada has three–count ’em! 3!!–official languages, at least according to the automated tellers: English, French, and–yup!–Chinese.
It is too stressful on the young’uns to learn the math tables in their wee noggins.
Old Miss MacKenzie my early public school teacher would make us come to the front of the class and recite all our tables backwards and forwards as she stood behind you with a hardwood pointer ready to smack you between the ears. And oh the shame when you screwed up. You not only got the clout over the head, but all your buddies and enemies would laugh their ever lovin asses off at you.
But guess what it worked. When I was old enough to pump gas and work in my Dad’s service station, I made change right out of my pocket at the gas pumps and rarely screwed up.
Red Necks don’t take kindly to gettin shorted on their change and they were much worse o deal with than Miss MacKenzie.
Beat it into their heads…It hurts but it works.
Gettin laughed at in front of everyone builds character.

Watcher- Us too. We used to have to recite that stuff back and forth and have to answer the teacher in unison, then, there were spelling matches and we’d have to memorize poems too. At home, I’d sing it. I made everything into a song– and it stuck.
My experience mirrors yours WATCHER.

This level of “dumb” has been around forever.
In the late 80s, my late wife got some food to go from an A&W at the local mall and she asked for it to be double-bagged. The counter guy spent several minutes trying to get one bag into another and couldn’t figure it out; he was trying to put an open bag into another open bag. My wife finally showed him how to do it in about 8 seconds by placing a closed bag into the open one and then opening the bag that had been inserted. The counter guy was amazed and looked at my wife in admiration.
Fool me once.
In 1983 Dr Fauci Deceptively Attempted To Link AIDS To Children
In an editorial, Dr. Anthony S. Fauci of the National Institutes of Health said AIDS has a death rate of at least 50 percent — possibly as high as 75 to 100 percent — with a doubling of the number of patients afflicted every six months.
‘The finding of AIDS in infants and children who are household contacts of patients with AIDS or persons with risks for AIDS has enormous implications with regard to ultimate transmissibility of this syndrome,’ Fauci said.
https://www.upi.com/Archives/1983/05/05/Household-contact-may-transmit-AIDS/7738420955200/
That twit recently wrote an editorial for Science. Now I have another reason to let my membership in the American Association for the Advancement of Science lapse.
Read an interesting exposé of the good doctor (in “American Thinker” if I remember correctly) which pointed out that, when he graduated from med school back in the 1960’s, he was subject to being drafted into the US Medical Corps and sent to Vietnam. The alternative – which he chose – was to take a designated government job. Apparently those who chose as Fauci did were called the “yellow berets”.
Our youngest brother who was in the Canadian Army told us that a lot of “less than special” American medical students who graduated near or at the bottom of their classes, chose to become Army Doctors during the Viet Nam war, as they just could not make the grade in private practice. The American Army was desperate for people who had any sort of medical training. And who knows, perhaps some actually improved in practice.
Perhaps Dr. Fauci was one of these “less than special” students.

How Covid Put An End To Your Rights….Looks Like You Will Have To Take Them Back.
https://www.zerohedge.com/political/how-covid-put-end-your-right-due-process
One result is that we’re guilty until proven…. certainly not innocent.
It has been ever thus in Canada.
Only if you are not ‘connected’. We have seen countless dirty Liberals considered so innocent that we are attacked for even suggesting that they could be guilty of something.
they could be guilty of something
Even after they’ve been caught with their hands in the till.
Canada actually has a law in the Criminal Code. Which says Guilty of an Act or an Omission.
So if you do it you are guilty and if you didn’t do it you are guilty.
We are all chained to the oars of The Canadian Slave Ship.
The Canadian Gulag is the biggest Prison Camp in History

At What Point Does A Democracy Become Kleptocracy. We passed that point years ago in Canada.
https://www.zerohedge.com/political/governing-looting-washington-beyond
I submit to you that what we have now is a Tyflocracy, a form of government in which the government is in an asymmetric war with its own people. Below are two opinion pieces which describe our current predicament.
The Sovereign Tyflocracy
https://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2021/05/the_sovereign_tyflocracy.html
Tyflocracy: The New Art of Oppressive Governance
https://theethicalskeptic.com/2017/06/18/tyflocracy-the-new-art-of-oppressive-governance/
For a moment, I thought you were saying Teflonocracy.
A form of government in which any charge of incompetence, malevolence, treason, dishonesty or criminality never sticks.
It’s more like a kakistrocracy here in this (post-national) country: government by the worst kind.
I’m not too proud to admit that I had to look that one up.
Maybe if we put a moratorium on electing lawyers…
I had to look that one up
And people claim that SDA isn’t educational…..
Bad I see now you just Bad to the Bone…
Kakistrocracy I thought you had made up a new cuss word.
“Diplomacy is the art of telling people to go to hell in such a way that they ask for directions.”
Watcher:
Many years ago, I bought a copy of Mrs. Byrne’s Dictionary of Unusual, Obscure, and Preposterous Words and that’s where I found “kakistocracy”. Yes, I read it and, at times, it was laugh-out-loud funny and all the words were legitimate.
For example, Fauci, Tam, Henry, and Hinshaw are quacksalvers. Each time Prinz Dummkopf opens his mouth about the plague, he footles and foozles and the “facts” he presents is foraminous. Then again, he believes he’s palatine, which explains his scopophobic reasons for his weekend trips to Harrington Lake.
This country is susfued…..
I’d take a lawyer over a snowboard instructor/engineering school drop-out..

https://en.globes.co.il/en/article-hamas-jeopardizes-intl-aid-1001370847
“Why pull the trigger just when, thanks to the World Bank and donor countries, the Gazan economy is strengthening?”
It’s because of the donor countries and the World Bank that Hamas can pull the trigger.
The World Bank and the donors know very well that their money buys rockets to kill Jewish children, not food to feed Gazan ones. That’s why they cut Hamas cheques. They can’t have another Holocaust, so they’ll settle for making Jews live in fear in their own country.
They don’t give a damn about the Muslims. In the end they’ll be disposed of, just like they are being disposed of in China.
Stunning that an Israeli paper has to ask such a naive question.
this is simply a political struggle between hamas and Abbas, elections were supposed to be upcoming but cancelled now, who benefits?
Another real big factor here is, the rockets (and whatever else they can smuggle in) are being supplied by Iran. Iran is openly at war with Israel, and has been for quite awhile; and they’re getting increasingly desperate for a victory in that war, ANY victory. And it ain’t going all that well, and the mullahcracy is getting sick of being viewed as laughing-stocks by the rest of the world for their repeated failures against Israel, but the steadily growing discontent from Iranians who despair at their sinking quality of living and the vast sums the mullahs and the IRGC are pouring into foreign terrorism, sums that are pointedly NOT being spent on improving the lives of ordinary Iranians.
They’re doing their level best to pump-out nukes – and getting sabotaged at every turn by Mossad; very embarrassing, very expensive and increasingly difficult to get replacement parts from countries who’re backing the U.S. sanctions. The EU has by-and-large ignored the sanctions, but the EU has its nose out-of-joint over IRGC hit-squads sneaking into Europe to assassinate Iranian detractors, so they don’t welcome Iranian parts orders for “dual-purpose hardware”. Mossad scored a grand slam in Iran a little while ago, looting a document drop and making-off with over a ton of government documents that clearly outlined Iran’s stonewalling and evasion of the IAEA’s inspectors, which were a key part of Obama’s lifting sanctions in the first place – and the documents were a key part of Trump reinstating them.
Iran is very active in Iraq, trying to subvert the government – a big cause of the war against ISIL was that Saddam powerfully backed the Iraqi army, which was largely Sunni, but the post-Iraq-war government pandered for votes to the Shiites who form the majority of the voters in Iraq – and the Sunnis in the army, finding themselves dispossessed and treated like dirt in their own country, tended to run-away and leave their engines running when facing ISIL in battle. As Iraq descended into turmoil, Iran decided to go-for-broke and install a puppet regime in its neighbouring country, efforts which are still ongoing – but they’ve run-up against three very big obstacles:
1) Everybody in Iraq hates them – to be honest, everybody in the Middle East hates them
2) Iran’s de facto leader in this sort of effort was always Soleimani – but he’s dead, and there’s nobody even remotely close to his abilities to replace him. This was a master-stroke by the U.S., most likely with a lot of Israeli targetting help
3) Iran’s other big weapon has always been bribery – which could bring even hostile tribes into accommodation – but resumption of sanctions trimmed the Iranian wick, and they just don’t have money to throw-around in bribes anymore.
Iran has poured lavish money and vast amounts of weaponry into Syria, trying to co-opt tribes and build a missile force on the Israeli border. It’s been a dismal failure; Israel keeps blowing-up their weapon stores, the anti-air weapons Iran bought from the Russians have proven unequal to the task of stopping Israeli cruise missiles (however good they’ve proven at shooting-down Ukrainian airliners), and they’ve lost so many people that they staff their Syrian depots with mercenaries now; too many Iranians have gone home in body-bags. And Iran has been propping-up the Assads in Damascus, and every Syrian remembers why the rebellion broke-out in the first place, so the tribes along the Israeli border – many of whom have received free top-quality medical assistance across the border in Israel – hate them too; and Iran just doesn’t have bribe money anymore.
Meanwhile, across the other Syrian border in Lebanon, the Beirut explosion has just made things worse for Iran’s proxy army, Hezbollah; not only because Iran can’t fund them anymore and Lebanon’s economy is trashed. Thousands of Sunni refugees have streamed across the border from Syria; and the traditional Lebanese mix of ~50% Christian, ~50% Shiite is being rebalanced by a lot of Syrians, all of whom hate Iran and by extension, Hezbollah. Hezbollah pretty well owns southern Lebanon and has deep weapons bunkers prepared and stocked for another Israeli incursion, but if Mossad spies and Israeli ground-penetrating radar can find Hamas bunkers in the Gaza Strip, they can find Hezbollah weapons stores in Lebanon. And with nobody wanting to work for Iran in Syria, a lot of Hezbollah mercenaries were drafted out-country into foreign wars – and never came home.
Finally in Iran itself, things are getting steadily worse for almost everyone. In a couple recent escapades, the mullahcracy painted huge U.S. and Israeli flags on popular thoroughfares for their people to walk on – and the people by-and-large, walked around them. Trump’s Farsi message was another master-stroke; the Iranian people hate their own leaders a lot more than they hate the Great Satans. What also didn’t help was numerous sons of mullahs who’ve posted material flaunting their wealth and sinful, profligate lifestyles on social media, which has really soured the mullahcracy’s “holy” message.

Love her voice. The story behind “Gimme Shelter” is a sad one. It’s always been my favourite Stones song.
Good song. Wasn’t it Mark Steyn who once said about the lyric ‘war is just a shot away’
“Couldn’t you just as easily claim that peace is just a shot way”?
‘away’
Same here to all your points, O.Kate. I read that Mary, who was pregnant at the time that “Gimme Shelter” was recorded, was at home wearing her pj s when she got a call to come over to the studio because The Stones were there and Mik thought they needed a Backup-singer. She protested the late hour but went over anyway. The Stones didn’t mind that she showed up in the aforementioned outfit as long as she ‘brought’ her voice.
Yes, Nancy. She was reluctant but, apparently, her husband said she should go. She miscarried not long after the session.

Remember “The Wonder Years?”
ABC is reviving the series for its next TV season — with a twist.
This time, it will have a Black cast, with Don Cheadle as the adult narrator.
Fred Savage, who starred in “The Wonder Years” when it ran originally on ABC from 1988 to 1993, directed the pilot episode of the new version and is a producer of the series.

I’ve requested “The Equalizer” DVDs from my library. Curious to see how it holds up. I do love me some Edward Woodward.
I PVRed “Breaker Morant” on TCM last night. He’s brilliant (as the Brits like to say) in the role.
Breaker Morant was an unexpected hit in North America 40 years ago. It was part of the Australian wave of movies that had caught the notice of viewers and critics at around that time. Among those films were Picnic at Hanging Rock, Gallipoli, and Mad Max (yup, that one), which was soon followed by its sequel The Road Warrior, as it was known in North America.
The story I heard about BM was that the United Artists movie Heaven’s Gate was supposed to be released at that time, but there were problems with it. In fact, HG was so dreadful and bloated that it sank MGM/UA. The result was that it was withdrawn from circulation and re-edited.
While it was being re-worked, the studio and distributors were searching for something to show in its place. BM had made its way to North America by then and was sent to theatres instead. The result was that viewers got to see a far better movie.
I finally got to see HG, both in its edited form and, later, the director’s version. It should have been left on the cutting room floor. I found it confusing without much of a plot, excessively long, and, quite frankly, dreadful. It showed once and for all that Michael Cimino was a lousy director and should have ended his career. Nope. He went on to make rubbish like Year of the Dragon a few years later. I think he’s still around, but doesn’t appear to have done much in the last 30 or so years.
I remember the wave of Australian movies. “Gallipoli” is one of my favourites, with a very young Mel Gibson. You forgot one, B A: “The Man from Snowy River,” with Kirk Douglas in a dual role. Being a hopeless romantic, it was one of favourites at the time. During the early 1980s, North Americans were obsessed with all things Aussie. The horrible “The Thorn Birds” probably contributed to that as well. I enjoyed the book but the mini-series was just awful.
I also forgot to mention My Brilliant Career, the movie that brought both Judy Davis and Sam Neill to the attention of North American viewers. It shows up on TCM once in a while and it’s still worth watching.
As for The Thorn Birds, I have to agree. I only saw the TV mini-series and I quickly gave up on it. While I was working in Calgary in the late 1970s, it seemed that just about every other passenger on the old Blue Arrow buses had a copy of the book in front of them.
Further proof that Hollywood is intellectually bankrupt, but we knew that already.

Mybe that StarDrive design/prototying process will get it out faster. The SR71 was awesome to look at, but had all kinds of issues, not the least of which was its fuel tanks leaked like a sieve until they got up to temperature. There were always puddles of fuel around them. Still a lot was learned from them, and I think the materials science that comes out of hypersonic tech will allow for civilian SST again, but cheaper this time, that is if we’re ever allowed to travel again.
The leaky fuel tanks were purposely designed that way. That was (is?) the only technically feasible way, given that era’s available materials.

“The left claims it champions consensual government and believes the United States must use its soft-power clout to isolate autocracies. But the Palestinian Authority and Hamas refuse to hold free and regularly scheduled elections. If an Israeli strongman ever suspended free elections and ruled through brutality, U.S. aid would be severed within days.”
If history and democratic values can’t fully explain the apparent hatred of Israel on the left, perhaps human rights violations do. But here, too, there is another example of radical asymmetry. Arab citizens of Israel enjoy far greater constitutional protections than do Arabs living under either the Palestinian Authority or Hamas.”
Our formal NATO ally, Turkey, received little global pushback for its treatment of the Kurds, or its frequent intolerance of religious minorities. Why does Israel alone always earn such venom?”
Hating democratic Israel while it is under attack is not just a reflection of the new woke and ethically bankrupt left. It is also a symptom of a deeper pathology in the West, one of moral equivalence, amoral relativism and self-loathing.”
