Covid theater on the Manitoba links

Unlike Ontario, Manitoba still allows golf courses to remain open. In the interests of virtue signalling, one supposes, they are trying to make golfing enough of a nuisance such that people will hopefully be dissuaded from playing.

“If an appropriate banner is in place, such as a plastic shield between the driver and the passenger, two people from separate households can share a golf cart.”

Most, if not all, golf courses in the province have suspended league play as a result of the edicts. The province considers league play a “team” sport even though the players rarely get within six feet of each other. However, league members are still welcome to show up and golf at the regular time at my local course. The only difference is that your scores will not be officially recorded.

Smart bug, that Covid. Who knew it could differentiate between players using an official score card and those that don’t?

  1. Let’s see… drive.3 iron, foot wedge,7 iron, and 3 putts. Yeah!! I got a par!!

Score card. We don’t need no stinkin’ score card.

  2. Our politicians are addicted to control. Political power must provide one hell of an endorphin rush because they just can’t give up the control the pandemic made possible.

Show me the science that says it is safe to golf in Manitoba but it is dangerous to golf in Ontario. To paraphrase another Life of Brian scene,… “They’re making it up as they go along”.

  3. All I can come up with to explain the absurd restrictions is cowardice on the part of the politicians to stand up to the bureaucrats with nothing to lose, and the delusionally fearful shrieking about wildly imagined risks. Palister and his ilk are continually surrounded by both, and won’t venture out to talk to the rest of us who just want to live again.

They might think they are striking a compromise, but it just comes across as pretentious theatre.

    1. It is the typical Government mentality, CYA. The best way in their minds is to be as harsh as possible. It isn’t about finding solutions, it is about avoiding blame. Their ilk cannot see past the immediate action to adverse unintended consequences, but if they could they wouldn’t be in government.

    2. I have been told by a person here in Winnipeg, that it is Pallister pushing the lockdown thing not CMO Rousin. This person has told me if it was Rousin’s call Manitoba would be wide open.
I don’t believe that for a minute. Bureaucrats are coordinating world wide via their commie unions.
All the politicians are spineless tyrants except Trudeau, he is complicit with the UN, WHO and China.
The rules have been absolutely ridiculous. just before this current lockdown you could not sit at the same table in a restaurant if you did not live together. There could be 4 of you who work together, drive to the restaurant in one vehicle and then cannot sit together. But if you are on the patio it’s OK. Just silly and annoying.
You can golf but no beer/snack cart.
It’s like they are trying to piss everyone off.
They are not going to be happy when they realize how much they did.

  4. > Who knew it could differentiate between players using an official score card and those that don’t?

I blame the closing time restrictions our various pols placed on restaurants and bars. Once the virus evolved the ability to tell time, there is no stopping it. Evolution, baby!

  5. In Florida you just use separate carts unless you live in the same house. What’s the problem?

Edit: It looks like the same rules here. Are there not enough carts to go around or do golfers get lonely if they are not jabbering every second?

  6. This latest fiasco demonstrates how much of a stubborn meathead Ford can be . He had an opportunity to show some leadership by following the science and allow outdoor activities. I suppose asking him to show leadership is pretty much a waste of time

    1. Yup.
      Sad to say it Bill.
Every one of these control freaks needs shown the door.
Leadership is beyond their ken, they follow the polls and the polls said “Lock ’em up” be decisive,be firm.Forget about all those social niceties you promised to uphold..
Who need civil rights, freedom of life and the right to make their own decisions?
      We have a pan…ic here.
The most abusive failure have been the self proclaimed conservatives, because unlike the Statist Thugs of the NDP and Liberals, the conservatives wanted us to believe they still valued individual liberty, responsibility ..
Until they found it too hard.
There is no climb down possible.
Our fearless elite have served us notice,we the mumbling morons who pay for their expensive existences are too stupid to have liberty, life or any pursuits unapproved by our betters.
And they have spent near a year and a half demonstrating their “Superior judgement and wisdom”.
Firing them all is far too generous a reward for their “wonderful help”.

  7. I believe they should make it illegal for any golfer to stand downwind from any other golfer. The COVID can get sprayed 105ft with the wind … right?

    1. Kenji,not extreme enough.
      If it saves one life..
Any Golfer who is breathing,is a deadly threat to all life.
Make it illegal for golfers to breath..
For has that not been the glorious message from our experts?
“We must protect you infants from the Dread Covid,we will do anything needed to prevent you contracting this ,much less than deadly, virus..Even if we have to kill you.”
Cause you have to give them credit.
They killed the economy stone cold dead.
So is our economy now “safe” from the dread Covid?

      1. This is not over, wait till the “climate crisis” lockdowns!
        It’s going to get ugly.

      1. A cart was inconvenient. I was a hookerslicerduffer. Rarely in the middle. I found more balls than I ever lost. Besides, I liked walking. Did it for a living. All across the country. I got called out early on wells I drilled ’cause the company man needed a golf partner. I spent summers at the Sundre golf course and every two bit course between Calgary and Edmonton, one year. Rarely finished nine holes on a bit trip. Did the course in Dawson City, Yukon once, got the shirt. You had to take the ferry across the Yukon River to get to it. Had the whole place to myself. You’d lose your ball in the middle of the fairways on that course, tough grass. In the rough, fugedditboudit. Bears. You’d get that feeling ‘tween the shoulder blades. The gallery was watching. BIG tracks at the edge of the fairways. I think I’ll drop a ball.

  8. This last year, many of your elders failed this fundamental test of leadership. They let their understandable human fear of uncertainty overcome their duty to balance all the interests for which they were responsible. They hid behind the advice of experts in one field but ignored the warnings of experts in other realms that they might do harm beyond the good they hoped to accomplish.

Sometimes they let what might be termed the mad pursuit of zero, in this case zero risk of anyone contracting the virus, block out other competing concerns, like the protection of mental health, the educational needs of small children, or the survival of small businesses. Pursuing one goal to the utter exclusion of all others is not to make a choice but to run from it. It’s not leadership; it’s abdication. I feel confident your Purdue preparation won’t let you fall prey to it.

    Mitch Daniels, Purdue Commencement Speech

    1. There will never be zero risk of anyone contracting any disease, never.

  9. Last year our golf course opened in mid May. We played the entire season with 30 to 50 of the same guys. The carts did not have a piece of plastic tied to the center of the seat, that are essentially useless and we stood around and talked before tee times. NO ONE GOT THE WHU WHO FLU, NOT ONE PERSON GOT SICK FROM ANYTHING. The same thing with my local pub, no one, not a single person got sick throughout the entire spring, summer and fall yet the freaking idiots closed everything down. We live in a world inhabited by morons.

      1. CO, back when I was part of those who actually did the picking we made sure that our choice understood that we could make sure he/she did not run again if they deviated from our conservative values and policies. Today riding associations have no such power. I used to tell people if you wanted to really be part of the process then join a party and you get to make decisions, not so much anymore. I left the conservative party decades ago, after they left me, with policies as liberal as any of the left wing wing nuts in Canada.

  10. In NSW, Australia, we played golf under these conditions during the COVID crackdown.
    * 2 players only in a group with 10 min spaced tee times.
    * One person per cart.
    * Marked and signed own card.
    * Flag in all the time with a 30cm ‘gimme’ (so flag wasn’t touched).
    * No rakes in sand bunkers so drop out of bunker.
    * Stableford only.
*Final scores recorded by one person only on computer.
At least we got to play.
