The War on Fun

Climate advocates seem increasingly concerned about fun and frivolity. I am here to defend it. But let me begin by (partially) agreeing with climate hawks’ fashionable antipathy towards one particular frivolity: Bitcoin.

  1. Have some real fun. Every Earth Day go burn an old tire.
I did that one year. It really triggers them

    1. And during Earth Hour, I now make sure that I use as much electricity as possible. I want Buttshead to get really mad at me.

      1. Celebrating Human Achievement Hour is now an annual tradition of mine. I usually take my V10 truck for a drive and leave the yard lights on, myself.

  2. Conrad Black at the National Post, writes about the global warming scam today.

  3. The same effete millennials and gen xers who cheerlead cryptos also tend to push ESGs when it comes to the oil and gas sector. Hypocrisy is hypocrisy. Wasting incremental energy digitally “mining” digital “gold” which, when the plug is pulled, evaporates, is bizarre regardless of the pseudo crisis scam of CAGW. I don’t have a problem about the speculation in cryptos and I support private competing currencies but, I still prefer shiny metals that don’t corrode, can be mined in volumes that can correspond more closely to growth in productivity thus offering stability vs deflation, can be touched, hidden, and can’t be debased undetected.

    1. What’s your beef with crypto? Its at least as robust as fiat cash when it comes to “pulling the plug”, just less stable, and easily portable, anwhere with $20 worth of processing power, a tiny bit of electricty and an internet connection. If every city over 200 000 in Canada got nuked, the CDN dollar would disappear, but Bitcoins would still exist.

      1. What are you talking about? You think bitcoin would be of any use to you in a nuclear holocaust? When nukes start flying, the only useful things will be the ability to feed yourself, guns and bullets.

Bitcoin is this century’s Tulip Mania. In the future, people will remember this time when imbeciles thought computer graphics cards consuming electricity and giving off heat somehow produced something of value. Here’s a true story: I have a friend who has lost his retirement savings about three times already. First on hydrogen fuel cells in the early 2000s. Next it was on some algorithm he developed that he thought could ‘predict the stock market.’ I didn’t know him in the first one, but when he decided to put his retirement savings into an energy tripler etf, I told him that if he was in a tripler and the market declined by 33% his investments would go to zero. He didn’t listen, and yes, they went to zero. Now he’s in bitcoin and won’t shutup about it. Bitcoin is a giant scam.. probably Russian or Chinese in origin. The commonality is the compulsive need to take a shortcut to generating wealth.

        1. LOL. Mining is actually more real than just printing money. Your friend is taking risks, but nothing ventured, nothing gained, and he’s free to do what he likes with his money. Now, saying Bitcoin is Russian or Chinese, well, shows how much you’ve really looked into it. I bet you think all crypto is some kind of commie plot to sink the west. Again, crypto is more resistant to pulling the plug than any given nation’s fiat currency, and there exist a fair number of places that accept it as payment. If you think mining bitcoins is perceived as a shortcut to wealth, then you have no clue as to what they’re about. They are a medium of exchange, albeit a volatile one, and one that is independent of state actors, which is what probably gets your goat the most.

  4. Ecofreakers are coming after your car, your house, your furnace, your dog, and your kids. I’ve seen plenty of them rage on about the carbon impact of pets and children, while at the same time supporting the insanity of electric cars and wind power.

They are not reasonable people. By which I mean that they do not REASON. Therefore facts, mathematics, physics, chemistry, none of these things make any difference to them. They WANT, and they try to get what they want, no matter what happens.

The end result of letting such people affect public policy will be poverty, famine and death. That’s what happens when you don’t pay attention to Reality(tm), it comes and kicks your @$$.

The best available solution to Greenies and ecotards is to ignore them unless they start successfully fiddling with public policy. Then you have to go after them as if they were an invading army. We are long past the ignoring stage here in Canada.

    1. Poverty, famine and mass death in the western world isn’t a lethal side effect of the policy. It is the whole point of the policy.

Our Chinese friends are governed by people who still remember how it is to not know where your next meal is coming from. They have understandably decided that the master race has gone hungry long enough.
Xi Jinping will only die contented once he gets reports that the blue-eyed devils are now the ones murdering children for meat.

That’s why they bankroll eco-lunacy in the West and brutally suppress any discussion of how the CCP are turning mainland China into an overgrown toxic waste dump and the Pacific into a sewer.

The dragon, if allowed to, will gorge on the planet until he bursts, like an anaconda that tries to consume an entire cow. He will expect the barbarians to be honoured to drown in his shit.

    2. Buy farmland. And when the lights go out chain these eco freaks to obsolete horse drawn farm equipment like a Feudal Lord, and tell your Overseer you want 1 acre of land per day in production for one bowl of gruel.
When they fail. Tell Them “It Is Not Your Day To Eat”.
The Floggings Will Continue Until Morale Improves.
Hey this is what they are voting for, get rid of fossil fuel sign them up to the one bowl of gruel per day produced organically by hand.

      1. Sorry Watcher they are too expensive to feed and too dangerous to live.
Now a horse will at least make an effort and might kick you in the head if it packs a grudge..But the creatures of Gang Green cannot perform useful work, will break your tools and are certain to attack anyone who tries to help them.
Far better to recycle them immediately.
And we will get far more reliable results from the biofuel from their fat, than we will ever gain from their whining and murderous attacks.
        By the way.
Ammunition and long guns are out of stock and back ordered all over.
If your local has ammunition then buy it now.

First, it will never be cheaper.
Second, those items have use, thus value, but those dollars you are sitting on are experiencing “temporary Hyper inflation” of a kind very similar to those “temporary income taxes”..
Third,by cleaning out the stores, you are preventing very stupid persons from injuring themselves when they go a-looting..Think of it as Safety First.
I learnt this in researching a new toy, sure some places are cheaper, but out of stock as insane inflation kicks in is the same as saying “Not at this advertised price”.

Those of us who were working in the 70s and 80s know how this game plays out.

Thanks to Emperor Justine we,Canadians, will all be millionaires by next year..
All will have a million, even the poorest.
Real shame a loaf of bread will cost you 2 million.
        Zimbabwe Mon.

    3. ‘unless they start successfully fiddling with public policy’

I was going to ask you if you have been living under a rock, but then I read your last sentence.

      ‘They WANT’

Yes, they do want. But what they want most of all is power. The power to force people to do what they say… not what they do… what they say.

  5. Funny. Another article based on false premises. Crypto currency isn’t going to fail because it uses too much power, or because it has no social value.

Crypto currency is a success, because it is doing exactly what it was designed to do. Separate fools from their money.

When every power grid in the world has been made unreliable by wind power, solar power, tide power, …. When all the coal plants, and all the nuclear plants, and all the hydro dams have been decommissioned to save the planet, ….

How are you going to use the dung fire you have going for cooking, and the candle you have for light, to redeem your crypto currency for 3 minutes of power to charge your Tesla that hasn’t moved in a decade?

    1. FYI, if you have any crypto, find a greater fool before the scheme collapses. Or, cling bitterly till your dying day. Your choice.

      1. Exactly.. Crypto is a classic ‘Greater Fool’ situation. As is most, if not all, real estate in Canada right now. Houses have the small advantage of not disappearing into thin air though.

  6. “or it will achieve its final form as a truly untraceable, unregulatable digital currency, which will further unmoor the public trust […] No thanks.”

That’s not an argument. That’s pure unthinking irrational emotion.

I own no crypto. My rule of thumb since the start has been “when I can use it to buy groceries or fill my gas tank, I’ll get some”. Getting in on the ground floor of “the one true crypto that everyone will use” is tempting, until you realize it’s just a speculative play like any other and the odds of being on the wrong side of that trade are pretty high. But I can absolutely see that the arguments in favor of replacing the monetary system with crypto are conceivably true. Possibly wrong, possibly disastrously so, sure. But there’s no concrete evidence either way as yet.

    1. Essentially, what I am hearing you say is, ‘we need a new monetary system that our governments can’t deflate into piss water in no time flat. Good luck. It’ll never exist. Crypto is a giant, admittedly long running, scam to separate fools from their money.
