  2. The CRTC has never engaged in moderating content? Huh? Hasn’t he heard of those ridiculous Cancon requirements of 50 years ago (overseen by–wait for it!–the CRTC)? What about the banning of receiving satellite TV signals until Mulruin said it was OK to do so? Yup, that was another CRTC operation.

    With all his sputtering and spouting waffle, I’m reminded of the saying “he who excuses himself, accuses himself”.

The CRTC still regulates content in several ways: 1) it imposes Cdn. content requirements on Canadian programming services (e.g., CTV); 2) it requires Canadian broadcast distributors (e.g., Rogers) to carry Cdn. programming services; 3) it determines whether a program is Canadian through a scoring system which it created (a program can be classified as Canadian even if it is not about anything Canadian; 4) It decides how many radio stations can operate in every area; 5) it imposes Cdn. content requirements for every radio station; 6) it forces Cdn. broadcasters to be members of the Cdn. Broadcasting Standards Council, which in turn can force broadcasters to remove “offensive” programming. And there is likely more, but I have run out of steam.

It accepts the idea that “I need forged papers to carry on” instead of saying “eff you, I don’t need no stinking papers.” I see where you’re coming from, but it means that you’re accepting their premise. There are about 5 levels at which this can be argued. You’re choosing the second level. I’m choosing the first (and higher risk, I recognize).

      But the bill, even if it adds back protections to individual Canadians, would still leave small conservative media (like SDA) vulnerable. The CRTC would still have regulatory powers over organizations, no matter how small. The CRTC regulates TV news, and see how one-sided news broadcasting has become. Conservative media in Canada is tiny as it is. Slimeball Guilbeault wants to eliminate these small voices.

  14. As we speak a certain staff member in the PMO is thumbing through her Rolodex and advising her contact at CBC to tell them about a rumour from “unnamed source “(tm) that David Common did some very bad thing in the past to a woman who wishes to remain nameless.
    After having this conversation the staff member of the PMO will be getting in touch with other friends in the media to “advise” them how important it is this story be heard.
