Let me fix that headline for you, it should read “What went wrong in Britain and it can’t be saved!”
After the Second World War when the Yanks started to go home, Britain went Labour because of the seeming Utopia that the they were promised. Five years into this Utopia and the average working class bloke had seen little to no improvement in his allotment in life, ration books, housing crisis, to name just two major impacts. This caused many to reconsider what their lives were like, and just what the war had cost them. Many emmigrated then and started writing letters to their relatives still in Britain telling them how better off they were. By the time 1955 rolled around a hell of a lot more emmigrated and the British Governments tried to stop this migration but couldn’t. The end result was that instead of addressing the problem the Government decided to replace the lost labour force by importing cheaper labour. That was when the problem began since the cheaper labour force was imported from countries that had no common customs to unite behind. The end result is the problems we have today. Can it be saved? In a word no! The pendulum has swung too far by half and there is no turning back. The emmigrants that left took a common language, common religion, common customs, and a desire for freedom to work for a better future with them. Unfortunately the same can’t be done today because across the globe the countries that once were havens for like minded people are unable to control their own borders. That is the problem and no one is willing to address it.
Well said Antenor, are you based there? Your post indicated you might be, or once were. I left the UK for Canada 39 years ago, because I could see where the country was going. (Downhill fast) I have never once been back. Unfortunately the decay I escaped is beginning to catch up with me here, and there is no where else to go.
The whole western world is decaying, and sadly I don’t see a cure, as we’ve gone to far. Fortunately I will not see the worst of it, but I fear for my kids and grandkids, their future I believe is dire indeed. One extra point, is that although I could see what was happening, I had no idea how bad it would get, and it continues to devolve further than I could ever have imagined. The decline and fall of the west is due at least in part to our own indifference, and our stupidity in thinking our governments were actually on our side. We can only blame ourselves for our lack of awareness. We had it good, and we therefore ignored the possibility that it could end, Worse, we could never imagine our own governments would work against us to take what we built for ourselves and our families. Sick and sad!
