The only time I encountered a voting machine was in Edmonton civic elections. They’ve been in use for more than 30 years.
Calgary used them for the Olympics bid plebiscite. Enough voters used them correctly that the bid was rejected.
You had to fill in the circle but many people just did the usual “X”. The machines could not pick up X,s.
