  1. Years ago, I was talking to an American friend – comparing Canada’s free-speech-limiting laws with the American paradigm…with the subtext of having just learned that all laws limiting freedom of speech in the British Commonwealth had actually been born in the US – just at the state, local, and university levels.

I made the point that, even though Americans have the First Amendment, it wouldn’t do much good if the culture were to continue shifting so far that the majority of private citizens and corporations were themselves imposing all of the speech/assembly limitations on their fellow citizens.

I put the question: “What’s going to happen if American culture gets so bad that the US Constitution itself becomes a thing that is being upheld against the will of the governed?”

Now conservatives are looking for laws to limit the powers of the private tech monopolies. But, if they’re successful, then that just means that they become the new fascists.

The real right answer is that, in a healthy free society, the people in general (including those who run these companies) should just see freedom of speech as an absolute and untouchable. But that’s not the culture. Thus, there is no good way for this to end.

Unless someone else can figure out a way to reverse the brain-rot that doesn’t involve the use of force, I don’t see how this ends well.

    1. if they’re successful, then that just means that they become the new fascists

Nonsense. Soi-disant conservatives deserve their free shit, don’t you know.

    2. I dunno bryceman, use of force would be acceptable to me, I’ve truly had enough of this crap.

Most of us I think, just want to live their lives in peace, and not have to deal with all the bullshit! Trouble is, they won’t let us. If they keep up the shoving, and jabbing the finger, at some point you need to shrug, snap the finger and to hell with the consequences.

  2. In America … there is NO such thing as “Hate Speech” … period. Anyone educated prior to the last 25 years knows … the 1st Amendment specifically PROTECTS speech that may hurt someone’s feeeeeeelings. But … as Matt insightfully reports … the UNconstitutional dirty work of censoring speech (and hence opposition political speech) has been outsourced to private industry.

We were warned about the interlocking directorates of the Military-Industrial complex back in the 1950’s. But what of the ‘other’ interlocking government-Industrial complexes? Multiple ‘complexes’ have proliferated across all facets of our culture. The Global Warming-Industrial complex … the CDC-Industrial complex … the racial preference-Industrial complex … and now, the Super High Tech Industrial complex.

We should have heeded Ike’s advice.

Now … we are headed for an inevitable unCivil War … after HALF our population are designated … “Terrorists” (speaking of “Hate Speech”)

  3. Amongst friends who support hate speech laws in the middle class social circle I am part of, I always find it ironic that when they bluster and blast about some example of hate speech they want to censor, they also explicitly or implicitly assert that they themselves are immune from any effect. It is always to prevent others more stupid, ignorant and gullible than themselves from being taken in. For example, Rebel News is often given as an example of a “far-right organ of racism etc” which they see through and feel should be banned.
