In the beginning of the Covid-19 virus outbreak, it seems that most people were willing to give politicians a break when it came to dealing with what, then, was a great unknown. But as time has marched on, we’ve gained so much more data about the virus, who is truly at risk from it and who is not. Yet, even though it’s now clear that the vast majority of people in society are not at risk of dying from the virus, governments around the western world keep turning to mass lockdowns. Why? Might it be that these people are primarily motivated by two things: their reputations and their careers? They all seem unwilling to admit that their policies to enact these lockdowns are now completely wrong. For if they were to admit this then they fear that citizens might start asking uncomfortable questions about the destruction of their livelihoods, their savings accounts, and their businesses. So on and on it goes, with no foreseeable way in sight for 2021 … 2022 … ???
Here’s an idea: Beginning on January 1, 2021, if any more lockdowns are imposed then 100% of all public sector workers – not just the politicians – must not be paid. Not a deferment of wages but NO WAGES during these lockdown periods. One would suspect that things would then magically change.
Absolutely. As long as the private sector is, forcibly, shut down by the government, then, the government workers should also be not merely shut down [as they are] but – without pay. Just as the private sector is without pay then, the public sector should be without pay.
I’ve been in the position of trying to get a city tax refund [about 4k] for my elderly brother who overpaid. Dealing with the bureaucracy has been impossible. They aren’t in their offices, they don’t respond to phone calls, to emails, to letters. It turns out, they are ‘working from home’. When I finally got a City Councillor’s staff to respond [who was also ‘working from home’] – it turns out that none of these Hard Workers even go into their vacant offices to get their mail! So, my letters and documents have been sitting in their pristine offices for months – because… Because?
At any rate, I told them: “As long as you are receiving full salary, then I expect full services”. Silence. And, a flurry of emails that they are having the cheque made out.
My suggestion – many voices should be talking – telling the government – that as long as the public service, for which we in the private sector pay – as long as this public service are receiving full salary, then, we expect full services. That means – any and all public services should be open. Schools [and no virtual classes]; libraries; driver’s licenses and registrations; accounts offices, building permits, financial – everything. Open.
And don’t even dare to put out your ads of “We are All in This Together’. Don’t dare say that – unless you actually live within the same realities as we, the deplorables who pay your salaries and benefits, live.
Futilities.
Only naive & low IQs will ever think politicians and their apparatchik + enablers will ever get their hands dirty.
Keep thinking this way and in 2 years’ time we’ll be at the same spot.

If I were more cynical, I would say that lockdowns are ways to mop up the small businesses that people like Bezos who own the media were not yet able to kill. Big Tech is the biggest beneficiary of lockdowns.
I have been saying that we should stop paying politicians and bureaucrats for a long time now.
There’s no attempt at risk assessment for Covid by any of the authorities. The Covid death stats typically mention age and that’s about it. A while back, I went to my doctor for a risk assessment for cardiac problems. He looked at my age, blood pressure, family history, lifestyle choices and other factors. He calculated my risk at around 13%. Covid strategy today is like getting a cardiac risk factor based only on age. Imagine how many people would be over medicated and how many would be under medicated if this is how we assessed risk for cardiac problems. It’s as if the goal of the authorities is to deliberately restrict the information they will publish about cases, as if more information in the hands of individuals that might encourage people to think for themselves is something to be strenuously avoided.
Certainly people who are under 60 and perfectly healthy are at minimal risk from COVID. Who is holding that information back from you? The problem for you is that people over 60 and people who are obese or have other conditions have to live in the same world and they vote too. The least you could do is wear a mask in case you do catch it, so that you can minimize spreading it, even if you don’t get all that ill if you get symptoms.
If masks were only about protecting the wearer, you would have a much more solid point. Unfortunately, people spread it for three days, on average, before they know they have it, so it’s impossible to make an informed decision about whether today you can go without a mask and not put anybody else at risk.

I call bullshit. The problem is that masks do nothing to stop the spread and that was the WHO opinion as late as 9 months ago. They were of the opinion that mask were a negative. The fabric stops the big gobs but the disease is spread by the aerosol that remains airborne as the big gobs fall to the ground. And people are fiddling with their face way more with a mask.
And then touching everything. Take a trip to Costco and observe. Masks are causing greater spread not less. Data backs this up.
And of course it divides us into the righteous vs common sense and actual science.

Current policy is aimed at absolving such people of their responsibility for looking after their own health and safety by legislatively preventing vast numbers of perfectly healthy people from earning a living, as if the latter had some causal relationship to the former. It’s a one size fits all solution that is actually not a solution unless destroying the economy is your goal.

Jacksonville fireman said that when they were all tested, 400 firemen were sent home as positive. None of them had symptoms before or since. Their medical director said that (in terms I understand) if you centrifuge the sample too many times, similar to early AIDS testing, they all come out positive. The test is rigged, probably intentionally, for positive outcomes, and you know the reason why. I’m not getting tested even though today I’m really under the weather, and I’m not getting a vaccine.

I have often thought that instead of government workers and politicians pay raises being determined by some board or set to cover inflation, it should instead be tied to the median private sector income. All of Ottawa would now be looking at a huge pay cut automagically, and they would be incentivized to develop industries with good jobs instead of killing them.
