Yup. I remember a CBC radio interview with an Indian man who had been in Canada (BC) for over 20 years, trying to bring his wife in Canada. He needed an interpreter.
When my parents and I came to this country more than 60 years ago, it was understood that English was the main language because that was what one used to conduct business or find a job.
My mother and father learned just enough to get by, largely because our part of Berlin was in the British Sector, plus, of course, there American forces in the city as well. Still, they understood that they had to work on it if we were going to live here. Nobody was going to make any allowances for us if we didn’t.
For one thing, my father had to be fluent in English if he was going to be successful in plying his trade. He had to read drawings and work orders plus he had to become familiar with the machines he was using. If I was sick at home, how was my mother going to tell the physician what was wrong with me if she couldn’t speak English? As well, both of my parents were involved with my schooling, so they needed to know English to speak with my teachers.
How can people hope to get by in this country without it? (Yeah, I know the answer to that one…..)
Not teaching immigrants the language of the majority (or not teaching proper language skills in schools) is a way to keep the masses in a serf-like state. They will advance no further, vote as told and demand only the hand-outs that they are used to.
Teaching the language of majority not only creates a well-rounded citizen but a liberated one, as well.
Joe, 1988 working construction, one worker could only speak a few rudimentary phrases in English. He had been in Canada over 30 years. From Italy. I agree that learning English is a must, and should be part of becoming a citizen. My parents both learned to, speak and read and write English, even tho they lacked higher education.
While I like Douglas Murray, I think it’s time for him to give up debating these evil idiots. These debates are totally useless. We got to a point where numbers matter and the numbers are not on our side. We should start changing that by increasing ours and decreasing theirs OR just admit defeat and adapt to the new life and try to survive, if possible. Blogs, debates, tweets, elections are useless. I recall writing something similar to Mark Steyn over 10 years ago. Still waiting for a reply.

We use over 30% of our energy just on heating so we can survive in this climate. It is impossible to reduce emissions if we triple the population as the current government is striving to do. Importing people from warm countries massively increases global emissions.

You keep a country, your country by keeping it culturally and societally the same as it was. No diversity, no illegal immigration, no welfare immigrants and all should be required to assimilate, no options, if not, what you get is no longer your country.
I know of at least two cases here in Lethbridge where Syrian ‘refugees’ have, just in the last 6 months or so, purchased homes in the $300K range. Drove by one of them yesterday and there was a BMW parked out front. Now I know that they pack them in – and maybe 2 families are sharing these homes but none of them work as far as I know. I know someone that works in the local school – and the men are always there to pick up the kids. Thinking that the benefits might be a bit too generous?
All while our veterans are asking for more than we can give.
