  5. Has anyone read anything about how long this can go on before total economic collapse? I assume the answer is much less than a year. Is there any thought at the national level about this kind of thing? I know no one in our federal government is but what about competent regimes?

    1. James, anything past 3 months will finish all small businesses such as independent restaurants and bars. Others that are involved in trades will slowly start getting work as some people manage to get a few bucks ahead. The only thing that will jump start everything is getting the government out of the way. Government has caused this disaster and will perpetuate it if given the opportunity. Socialists want nothing more than to control your every activity. Open everything up now and leave people alone and things will get back to normal.

      1. Justin and all his fellow travellers believe that THEY control the economy, and can just “turn it on” when/if this is over. Their plan will follow two paths:
        Print and throw additional billions in all directions.
        Make work projects, coincidentally, all in Liberal risings! SOP.
        Have any media lapdogs asked Justin or Peking Tam yet, what happens if there is never a vaccine? The common cold is also a corona virus, despite decades of research, a vaccine has never been found for it…………these people are stupid, and consummate liars, with the lapdog media aiding and abetting the destruction of a substantial part of our economy and the well being of our citizens, far more than would ever be affected by the Wuhan Flu.
        On a side note, was talking with a financial friend on the weekend, with his take on things. His advice was, the Libs will do everything they can to keep rates low and protect real estate and housing. If mortgage defaults start happening in any appreciable numbers, it will create a devastating domino effect throughout the economy, with dumping in other assets, cars, big boys toys, etc.
        It would be no surprise that the big banks are the invisible hand behind the Liberals, Bay St always controls the governing party.

      2. Speaking of the Trades … OWG. Let me add that another critical component of any economic recovery is the ease (or difficulty) of refinancing in this unprecedented economic shutdown. The Fed has made money cheap … but if the average man cannot unlock the equity in their homes (and lower their payments) to see them through this aberrant economy … we may see a wave of foreclosures and an absolute depression in the construction industry. I believe the RULES for bank refinancing need to be modified to deal with sudden job loss and other dark stains on personal incomes. The Feds may need to look at long histories of employment and creditworthiness… rather than taking a snapshot in this time.

    1. Nancy, at my university UNB at Fredericton, where I taught and researched for 31 years. My wife Michele lived in the NS area for 20 years, knew old friends who were killed, and I was up part of the night consoling her. One of my friends was killed. What makes all of this extra tragic is that all of this has taken place during the pandemic quarantine.

      Back to politics, watch out for more lobbying to restrict legal rifles.

      1. Also, the NS murders took place on the aniverseries of the Waco killings, and the Oklahoma terrorist act (April 19). So there is a chance that the late Mr. Wortman was an ultra-rightist nutter.

          Neighbours say Mr. Wortman owned a successful denture clinic in Dartmouth, and had a strong interest in RCMP and RCMP memorabilia. They said Mr. Wortman was well-off but appeared to them to struggle with alcohol, and that his business had been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

          1. True enough. It could be that Wortman knew about the April 19th aniversary date (also the date of the Marc Lepine/Gamil Gharbi killings), and that he had no connection to ultra-rightist groups. It could be that the perp was upset that he was upset that his small businesses were shut down, and that his rent on other properties were not coming in. But everyone in Canada is losing money, big time, with the Chinese virus.

        2. I don’t know, but I think it more likely that he was a normal person most of the time and was driven over the edge by something– possibly lockdown (by yourself all the time, loss of normal routine, social contact) and/or drugs. He managed to live a normal life for many years. It would be interesting to learn more about the mental effects of lockdown and isolation on people. Obviously most people cope. Some do not.

      2. My condolences to you and your wife, David. These killings are so tragic and senseless. It just goes to show you that life is short and precious.

        This will be a fluid story. Let’s hope we can learn more information as time goes on. No doubt the Police will put together a timeline and character study of the killer. There are so many unanswered questions, this investigation will go on for a long time, I’m afraid.

        This is a small area of Canada and it doesn’t surprise me that you and your wife knew people that were killed. NB and NS have communal interest, the two places are almost like one province.

        I didn’t know anyone well from the area but used to go to Truro once a week for a course. Used to stop at ‘that’ gas station often too. However, I did know one RCMP member & his wife (now retired) from the southern region of NB and they will be shocked and devastated. I will have to email them today.

        Btw– I remember Waco– an awful tragedy too. David Koresh was a nutter. The story went on for a long time as this one will, sadly.

  7. The stimulus was $1200…maybe 30 days for Joe six pack… Small Bus loans ????? Today the Trump team said they were using Medicare funding for Hospitals Etc…..They better have a plan to pay it back, or collect from all those that don’t pay payroll taxes (~ 40% of work force) Doctors, Lawyers, big Unions, Police, Firefighters, civil servants, Congressional members, contract MSM personnel. Any individual exempt, but has a SS account may pay into his/her account….That’s why it’s not fair that Joe Six pack has to pick up the tab….shit happens

  11. The Canadian media is following orders today, and trashing Hitler Scheer and his Nazi Conservatives for wanting a return to parliamentary democracy. And don’t forget that Scheer doesn’t believe in gay marriage. He is evil. And Heather Mallick at Blackie’s taxpayer funded Toronto Star breaks her record today on how many insults to Trump she can put in a story. To be fair she is also upset that Canadians would say negative things about renovations to Harrington Lake for her hero Justin. Justin is wonderful.

    2. …and don’t forget that Elizabeth May was ‘livid’ with Andrew Scheer for demanding some parliamentary oversight or at least it must have been important for us to know that May was ‘livid’ because this AM it was the main story on MSN the CBC’s internet partner.

    1. Just a guess, but I would bet that most of the infected are not sick. Does the one in critical condition have an underlying condition? Also, we are not given numbers for the “others” who are sick. Time for media to stop the fear mongering.

    1. Odd that the article gives no info on who was being investigated and why. I do not believe the US subscribes to the ICC, so rightly they would be concerned about the court appearing to act against them.

  15. Had to turn off Blackie The Gay Pirate’s daily rant as I puked on the cat. Great Leader refused to answer questions about Hitler Scheer still insisting on a return to parliamentary democracy. Although he did get his loyal media, mostly from Quebec to answer questions on how wonderful he is. And he had one of his loyal journalists from Quebec ask him about the brave Bloc Leader stating that evil Scheer is holding parliament hostage. A prepared question was given to a journalist to ask Great Leader about gun control in light of this recent tragedy. Blackie explained that new legislation to ban assault weapons will be coming soon.   16. The mass killings in NS is going to bring gun control discussions to a boil again in Canada. As I alluded to in a previous post what is going to be lost in the “news’ accounts is that in Canada when the population is cautioned by the police to shelter in place, they shelter in place by crawling under the bed as exemplified by our illustrious PM. The average Canadian has no ability or desire to self defend. If any residents that were killed had the ability to self defend, ie. owned a gun, it was probably locked in a secure storage container and not available for immediate use. Had this happened in America a warning to shelter in place would have meant that some of the residents in the area would have been “locked and loaded”. It will be interesting to watch the contortions that politicians, police and media get into to spin this tragedy into a push for more gun control. A government that would legislate away the right to self defend is not a government, it is a tyranny. A people that would allow their right to self defend to be removed are nothing but sheep.

      The farther away the cops are the more important it is to be ready to reasonably defend your life, loved ones, liberty and property.

        Whether the gun(s) were legally owned or not, this POS had a pretty good murderous plan with a uniform and fake car.
        Easy for me to armchair quarterback but even if any of the victims or witnesses had weapons in hand it would have been pretty tough to digest what they were seeing and react accordingly.

      I rather enjoyed listening to the salesclerk explaining to a turdo supporter why he couldn’t buy a gun last week and how the courses you need to pass to get a permit are suspended, due to Kungflu, until further notice. LOL. He asked me to sell him one years ago. I told him to get his papers in order. I figured he wouldn’t and if he had I would have made him show me he could shoot it safely. I never sell a gun to someone I haven’t shot with enough to know they can be trusted. I don’t sell many guns. Betcha he goes and buys one from one of his dealer friends. I wonder if he will even test fire it, let alone practice enough to become proficient, before he hides it where his kids can’t find it. No chance he will buy a gun safe. I’m sure he will sleep better, knowing he has protection. Glad I’m not his neighbour any more.

  17. Watching the Rt. Hon. Trudeau’s 11:15 Eastern presser. Many questions asked, from the wondrous Ottawa press gallery, deal with (1) why doesn’t the government table a much stricter gun control, for long-guns, and (2) isn’t it terrible that the Conservatives are playing politics with Parliament sitting, during this time of the Nova Scotia mass killings. And Trudeau handled the tough questions by hitting them out of the park. And the CBC commentators afterwards gave the Prime Minister high marks for his answers. The objective CBC commentary gave the Rt. Hon. one high marks for giving comfort to people grieving. /s

Yeah, the government shouldn’t be held to account by the commoners.
