The rural Ontario hinterland and small towns outside Toronto grew large enough and prosperous enough to demand a say in how things were run. Even after an armed rebellion in Upper Canada they were defeated and screwed over by the Toronto elite. Today rural Ontario still has no voice. Today the hinterland is just farther away, in Alberta, but its the exact same play book. Leave before its too late.

Most conservatives today believe in standing for and financially supporting: gay marriage, abortion, climate change/global warming initiatives, income taxes, government wealth redistribution (EI, Charitable agency status[Church’s], welfare, Canadian drug plan, universal health care, the Canadian Education System – primary thru post-secondary).
The Lawfare Society has become political under Conservative/Liberal Governments, the government funded media has become a socialist megaphone drowning out and speaking over every voice which they choose to silence which does not align with their belief system and current fascination with the latest trend.
Canada has lost its identity (if it ever actually had one). The acute recent story is the hockey story out of Toronto. The emergency goalie is a Canadian, practices with the Leafs but gets called up to finish the game for the opposition Carolina Hurricanes from the United States. Comes out onto the ice wearing a Leafs logo mask, Leafs blue pants, Leafs blue and white goalie pads, glove and blocker and socks, only thing Cane is the jersey. Between the 2nd and 3rd period, the Canes got a red shell to put over the blue hockey pants to disguise the true colour. (now if that isn’t a metaphor, nothing is) He is well past his prime, 42 years old and drives a Zamboni for a living. He goes out and backstops the Canes to a win, allowing fewer goals (2 to 3) than the professional full-time goalie on the other end of the ice for the remainder of the game for an incredible and unbelievable win. He receives the first star, all the press, and becomes a national hero. The Carolina Hurricanes place his jersey in their fan store (selling like crazy) with 25% of proceeds going to the Kidney Foundation in support of the agency which helped with his kidney transplant 15 years ago which saved his life. He is now a national hero! I cheer for the underdog, this is a fantastic and amazing Canadian story.

What does that have to do with being conservative? It a window into today’s society. Most of those sitting in their seats were Toronto Maple Leafs fans, cheering for their home team at the start of that game. They cheered for their team, they put down their money and their emotional currency to support the Leafs that night. If you would have stood outside the arena that night and placed a $100.00 bet with every person that entered that building that night wagering they would be cheering harder for the opposition Carolina team than the local boys at the end of the game, you would have been able to retire with a grin on your face. Did those people switch loyalties? – No; Did they become lifelong Hurricanes fans? – No; Did they go home and burn their Leafs jersey? – maybe…their feelings overrode their loyalty to their team. Those fans found something bigger to believe in, something which they knew to be true and right, that there is a dream hidden in each one of us that when opportunity presented itself, the hard work of preparation and training and discipline and skill gave that man the chance to prove to himself, his wife and children and his friends, the community, the nation and the whole world that it is worth the effort and dreams can be achieved. But he did that playing against the team he was trained to support and was loyal to.
The reality is, it was just a game! It was an experience. It is the feel-good story of the decade and it has only just begun.
Conservatives have given up ground to socialism and communism and humanism on the slippery slope of compromise and opportunity. I live in rural Alberta, and I don’t see the whole issue being on a lot of people’s radar yet, unbelievable as that may seem. They feel like loyal Canadians, and want to work within the country to get changes made. To be clear, Trudeau is wildly unpopular for the most part, but that doesn’t translate into votes for separation.
So as much as I would like to see us move ahead with creating a new country…I think we need to be aware if we are in a little bubble of like minded people (saying these things)….the whole effort could still fall flat. I think smaller steps of separating out our pensions, our policing, our taxation…that would be a start.

I am in Winnipeg, and over coffee I hear lots of support for Western Separation. Preferred option here is essentially claiming the old Rupertsland plus Thunder Bay (We did win west of Thunder Bay on a Grey Cup bet). Also a lot of support for allowing other regions to separate and join the west, just nothing in the old Upper and Lower Canada Even know some Dippers that want out. Very few federalists, but that may just be the company I keep.

The idea of leaving Canada will seem alien to some, but once facts are on the table, many more people will come on board– and quickly. Under the Liberals, this is not traditional Canada.
