Update: Health authorities in China’s Hubei province – the epicentre of the coronavirus epidemic – reported on Thursday 14,840 new confirmed cases, almost 10 times the number reported a day earlier, and new deaths attributable to the contagion rose to 242, more than double on the day. This brings the totals announced by the province’s health commission to 48,206 and 1,310, respectively, as of Wednesday.

Yes, it’s another strain of the flu but augment it with a diet of bats, dogs, cats, poor selection of produce, compressed living, extremely bad air quality, lack of hygiene, as we know it, sanitation, and education. let’s also remember, we have all these things and flu season still takes a good toll.

      2. Hey morons, these people have respiratory systems that are completely compromised by constant exposure to intense air pollution as well as a population with 70% smoking rates. Their lungs are already 50% f*cked.
        Add to that a population that sneezes, coughs, hacks and gobs their sputum into the air releasing trillions of viruses with every breath that totally overwhelms delicate lung tissues.
        And a population that still refuses to wash their hands after taking a shit and then goes on to handle food that is half rotten and already compromised with cellular tissue expose to viruses.
        Their immune systems are a mess.
        Compare that with those outside of China. 2 deaths and a vast majority of cases that are just a case of the sniffles or a bit of flu.
        Learn to evaluate risk and guard against emotional responses.
        Look at how markets represent a cumulative measure of risk and see that this does not represent in any way a threat to the economy,

      I think the majority of cases might be 20-40 years old due to they being active people, and they are a large subpopulation in China. But once elderly people (and smoking old men) happen get this disease, they are very prone to die.

  4. I watched a video this morning of hospital staff, putting three dead children in a single body bag. How bad could it be if you’re running out of body bags?

Okay, remember an ex-pat Englishman (can’t, sadly, remember his name) who wrote memorably of his growing up very poor in England and how his life was turned around by being evacuated from London during WW II and being housed with a family who really encouraged him. One remembrance of his has stayed with me: a younger brother or sister had died as an infant and the family could not afford a funeral so the undertaker slipped the young’un into someone else’s coffin so he/she could be properly buried.

  6. Johns Hopkins assures us that the number of cases is stabilizing. In other words, word has come down from Beijing to stop reporting cases inside China, on pain of re-education or being used as spare parts.

      In conformity with other provinces, starting today, Hubei Province will include the number of clinically diagnosed cases into the number of confirmed cases.
      Of the 14,840 cases added, 13,332 are due to the new classification while 1,508 are new cases.

  8. When have you EVER seen such EXTREME measures taken by any government (totalitarian or otherwise) to “contain” an outbreak? I’ve never seen any such measures taken by ANY government. And what governments have giant antibacterial spray trucks ready to deploy? I’ve never seen nor heard of such thing in America.

    So, yeah … simply judging by the response … this is a SERIOUS damn outbreak.

    But I have to admit a little admiration of the Chinese government for taking such drastic measures to contain this incurable strain of influenza within their borders and within a limited number of cities. And yes … human beings are not designed to live in hives like these insanely DENSELY packed Chinese cities. The risk of human-hive collapse is greater than any honeybee ever suffered from “global warming”. Behold the urbanization-model demanded by the Green New Deal. A hive of humans packed one upon another in the most unhealthy density imaginable.

    All you SDA’ers living out in the open Prairies are the lucky ones. Even if your incomes are less than your Urban Toronto counterparts. You enjoy the richness of a clean, sparsely populated earth. More valuable than plastic Canadian dollars.

    1. yes Kenji, population density certainly is a factor, the village I was in , only had 15 million inhabitants, and you were always close to “others”, but they were very modern settings, and their hi-rises and shopping malls could be any were in the western world. When I show friends pictures from over there they are amazed at how modern it is. But still, 15 million is a lot, in a confined existence.

      Exactly. Numbers are bullshit 15K new cases today are not new cases, it just a number that Chicoms released because too many people were probably inquiring about the fate of their loved ones. All the responses: Massive quarantine (probably eclipsing by order of magnitude any past quarantine anywhere, ever. Record building of so called hospitals (prisons for infected centers). Trucks spraying the disinfectant around the cities tell us that much more is happening than the official numbers are suggesting.

      Also telling is the death to recovery ratio. It was about 1 to 3 a week ago, up to about 1 to 5 yesterday and down to about 1 to 4 today. Things did not change like that, they are pulling the numbers out of their asses.

      I read somewhere that the mortality rate from the annual flu viruses is around .4%

    I’m also curious about the number of Chinese people that have “disappeared” over the last month
    Chart that against the previous 2 years for the mean.
    Its getting to be the CCP version of “living in interesting times” post Chinese New Year isn’t it???

  12. If you look at the results of the 1918 Spanish Flu, it hit young children the hardest. I wrote a story about the pandemic many years ago. It was interesting to note that one region in SW Sask was almost completely free of the flu. The health authorities never really knew why. When I researched the records, I found out that the particular region made a high quality 100% alcohol liquor utilizing potatoes for the mash, much like Russian vodka. They also consumed a lot of garlic. Who knows??

    On a different note. I was raised in the 50’s and 60’s. When my brother and I refused to eat something, my mother would say, ”Millions of Chinese kids are going to bed hungry every night, and you guys are wasting your food.” My brother would reply, ”Oh yeah, name three!” That’s what came to mind when I saw that 14,840 new cases were allegedly diagnosed in one day. I believe it would take considerably more than a day to arrive at the conclusion that they all had coronavirus

  13. Had occasion, many years ago, to see the “linen” on which was recorded the names of those who died at Anyox during the Spanish flu. Anyox was a mine up the northwest coast of British Columbia (actually in an inlet just east of the Alaska Panhandle), and was rather isolated. Yet the flu found them; the dead were almost unformly between the ages of 20 and 40, and I remember a nurse was among the victims.

    When the Spanish flu went through the Prairies, my mother was a youngster living on the family farm in southeastern Manitoba. Their response was, I suspect, typical of the farmers in the neighbourhood: the family stayed on the farm and self-isolated while Grandad – who had to go into the nearest town for supplies – did a second self-isolation and stayed in the barn. Supplies were passed across to the house with minimal contact. Not until the epidemic was over did Grandad move back into the house. The flu didn’t hit that homestead.

  15. The good news for the US is that the official quarantines seem to be helping control the spread. Only 14 cases, and twelve of them are people coming from Wuhan and China.

    Let’s pray the good news for the US continues.
