38 Replies to “It’s Probably Nothing”

  1. Trudeau is busy encouraging people to congregate among the infected to virtue signal which is actually very good advice. The way I see it is of you’re dumb enough to heed his advice you’re probably one of his voters. This thing could be pretty good for this country especially if it spreads like wildfire in Toronto and Vancouver which it will.

    1. Yes, he was the top story on CBC radio all day. All Canadians are racist against Chinese because uhhhh virus.

I was TOLD two days ago by my Chinese friend NOT to go anywhere near ANYTHING Chinese. Every Chinese person is certain the virus is already here and spreading. His words!

I guess that makes me racist for listening to him?

      1. “All Canadians are racist against Chinese because uhhhh virus.”

Chinese dietary habits, which are cultural, lead to the Chinese people being a crossover point for Zoonotic Viral Infections.
It’s the 3rd Decade of the 21st Century and this is just science.

But yes, Canadians are racist A-holes. That’s why they reelected Allah Deen Zoolander Kiltie Blackface to be Prime Minister.

      2. Chinese are prone to overreaction and histrionics. They literally panic if they think the store will run out of something they need/want, and they don’t need any actual evidence to prompt them into such a belief. This is why they can’t form a proper, patient line-up for anything, and why they’ll cut in front of you at the drop of a hat. They seem to be born with an innate fear that there’s never enough. My wife and I have had several discussions about these types of cultural imperatives in contrast to how people are in the west.

She also throws “everyone knows that” and “it’s obvious” and similar expressions around without even thinking about it, and with little logical reason. Chinese seem to believe in an homogeneity of thought that just can’t possibly exist. I’m also aghast at the amount of bad information she gets from the Internet and believes without any corroboration (“because it must be true”), and then happily recirculates it. Chinese are like children when it comes to things like that: they didn’t develop in tandem with the Internet to be able to develop the proper BS filters that most of us have, plus the aggressive censorship of anything but approved content.

Your friend may have valid concerns, but I’d suggest taking his hyperbolic declarations with a grain of salt. I’d guarantee that very few Chinese give a crap if the virus is in Canada or not, and better than 95% of those are physically present here. I wouldn’t even bet money on how many of my wife’s extended family care, and they actually like her.

        1. Well, he’s from Hong Kong, not the mainland and I’d say he’s very smart. But I’m a racist according to Trudeau I guess for listening to an asian telling me to avoid asians.

          1. Hongkongers are an altogether different kettle of fish, but I’d suspect the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Plus, they kind of hate China these days anyway.

Trudeau’s a idiot for saying something like that. Among myriad other reasons. It’s not racism to exercise common sense in preventive measures.

      3. Kind of exactly what my Chinese friend said. “Don’t believe anything the Chinese government says. Don’t go near anything or anyone in the Chinese community until this is over. Stay out of big cities and avoid the doctor’s office if you can.” His kid had a bug that turned into pneumonia and he and his wife self quarantined with the kid for 14 days because they had a relative visit from China (who was not sick) two weeks before the outbreak started, just in case. This guy remembers SARS. He must be a racist too.

  2. Just a request… Please keep a link to the Johns Hopkins CoronaVirus GIS info. It shows rather graphically how this outbreak is progressing.

The scary part is that if you jump over to their “modeling” pages, you’ll see what they think the real number are, as opposed to what is shown as reported on their GIS page.

  3. Far be it for me to suggest that the chicoms we’re developing a biological weapon to target specific DNA and instead of affecting the intended target it infects those of Chinese descent. Then when they tried to dispose of it it got out of containment and started infecting the country around the breeched containment site in Wuhan.
But I won’t suggest that. That’s too far fetched isn’t it.

Think I’ll dust off that copy of “Andromeda”.

    1. I’m doubtful that this was a “bioweapon” that was accidentally released.

However… one part of bioweapon research is to develop disease organisms that are suppsedly “not lethal”, and to then release them into test populations to see how they spread. The cultures are usually chosen so that the spread will “burn out” quickly through mutation of the organisms into something more easily resisted by anyone infected by later generations of the virus.

In this case, it looks like the viral mutation went the other way, and has become both more infectious and more deadly. If true, let us pray that the trend does not continue.

      1. China’s population is something like 1.3 Billion people. One reason for the “wildlife markets” is that there is not enough food to feed that many people. As well, there has been another outbreak of Avian Flu which has killed off many, many chickens. Perhaps instead of a war, the Chinese government is trying to reduce their population through disease leading to death. It is my understanding that the virus is mainly affecting older people, diabetics or “useless eaters”(people no longer working/contributing to the economy with taxes). Even with this flu, there will still be over 1 billion survivors. But I could be wrong.

        1. ” One reason for the “wildlife markets” is that there is not enough food to feed that many people. ”

Not true. China’s got plenty of food. They just it very very fresh.

    2. I thought exactly the same. By now however, I’m sure that the CIA and MI6 have tested the virus. It would be to the advantage of the US government to try and blame the Chinese for this syndrome if they could. I’m anxious to see what kind of story the National Enquirer comes up with!!

    3. If it were a bioweapon we’d already know because we have the sequence of the bug. It’s “novel” only in the sense it’s a new recombination but it is certainly not something Mother Nature herself could not have come up due to a random mutation or two crossing species.

  4. It’s a good opportunity to round up dissidents and dispose of them evidence free.
And with that any credibility attributed to Chinese data is null and void.

  5. Like any virus, it will take its toll and then dissipate. I can’t believe Einstein Trudeau and Company that are allowing a plane load of people to land in Canada from a region in China that is known to have been infected with the virus. But then if the Liberals were thinking, they wouldn’t be Liberals.

As for the severity of the virus, my brother worked on a construction project in Mali, Africa where he contracted what they thought was malaria. There was no medical doctor available in the nearby village, so he accepted the help of a tribal medicine man. The guy laid him down on a bed made of wicker inside a straw hut. The women of the village filled a cauldron with water and various herbs. They boiled the water which set my bro sweating. He was hallucinating from the fever. Our Dad had passed away a couple of years before this incident. My bro later claimed that he saw Dad enter the straw hut where he told my brother not to worry, that he was going to be fine.

Within a couple of days, he was OK, and went back working on the dam they were building. When he came back to Canada, he went to the University of Saskatchewan hospital in Saskatoon for tests. There was no trace of any virus left. Sometimes you just have rely on what you have to work with.

  6. The NYTimes is now admitting that China “put secrecy and order ahead of confronting the coronavirus.” Obviously. They wanted the virus hushed up until it started overwhelming the US medical system—after which they could blame Trump.

  7. I applaud President Trump and more importantly, his experts. They actually have a rational plan and reasoning for real quarantines of the highest risk individuals. They should have done the same thing for the Ebola epidemics in Africa during the Obama Administration. Thank God they created an effective Ebola Vaccine, and this will no longer be a problem.

This Coronavirus could be a very bad thing if it spreads easily from person to person in the US like it does in China. China has one sick individual infecting multiple people, and therefore lots of people are infected. SARS in 2003, Didn’t seem to spread that easily here in the US. My best guess is that if we don’t see 25-30 people to people (not people coming from an infected area) infections here in the US by Valentines Day, the virus will be capable of being controlled here in the US. If it is 30 or more, lots of people will be infected in the US before it is brought under control.

    God Save Canada.

    1. “They should have done the same thing for the Ebola epidemics in Africa during the Obama Administration. ”

Why? There was no reason to. Ebola was never a threat to us.

  8. Death rate not as bad as the flu.

But the INFECTION rate seems to be much, much higher, so the death TOLL could be much higher.

    1. Not quite true Dirtman, it looks like its about 10 times more fatal than the flu from last years Flu Report from Australia. Thats only if we can trust the Chinese numbers of 2.3%, I suspect its highers since hospitals are overwhelmed and people are probably dying at home and not being counted. If you don’t test the body after they died you can honestly say that the virus wasn’t confirmed, weasel words or liberal speak, whatever you want to call it. The other thing to note from the report was that SARS wasn’t very infectious and mainly spread in Hospitals – they fixed that problem this time or its just bad luck and those bats were really nasty. The other thing to note is that there is a flu vaccine, there isn’t anything for this coronavirus.

“According to the latest Australian Influenza Surveillance Report for the 2019 flu season, there were 812 influenza-associated deaths up until October 6. This made up 0.27 per cent of the 298,120 laboratory-confirmed notifications of influenza reported to Australian authorities.

This compares to the coronavirus, with latest numbers suggesting 106 people (2.3 per cent) have died out of 4515 known cases.

Prof McBride said it appeared coronavirus was more severe than influenza, although it may not be worse than severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), which originated in China and killed nearly 800 people globally in 2002 and 2003.

“The difference between coronavirus and SARS is that SARS was not that infectious, it was transmitted mostly within hospitals,” Prof McBride said.”

      1. The Wuhan virus has infected more people than your calculation takes into account. It’s mortality rate is pretty close to the flu.

  9. Rumors were going about the past week that Creamatoriums in Wuhan were working 24hours a day. I guess that’s now been confirmed.

  10. It’s almost like ya’ll want this thing to be the next black plague, it’s pretty creepy tbh. Sorry but you’re probably going to have to wait a bit longer to fulfill your fucked up apocalypse fantasies, exceedingly likely that this is just a budget swine flu.

    1. Andrew thinks nothing is a crisis until he has acquired talking points on how to frame Vladimir Putin or Bibi Netanyahu.

Your Chinese girlfriend must be a PHENOMENAL screw, Andy. Let me guess, Greek bareback so you can pretend she’s a 10-year-old boy?

    2. They need drama because they can’t think. Thinking hard. Feeling good. Action good. Funny part is a true influenza pandemic would probably quiet down this board real good given its age morality profile.

  11. Hopefully your right, but you may be wrong.
One things for sure the Chinese government is lying.
And our government doesnt seem to care.
    Interesting times.

  12. Think I’ll skip the Mandarin Buffet for the next little while…

please don’t report me to the Liberal NKVD !!

  13. Great site with interactive links. Has new numbers a few hours before the Johns Hopkins one. Can use google translate to read about the German cases. Those are fairly interesting in terms of one point of contact from Shanghai and fall out. Watch the curves, hope for flatline. Chinese curve is still data with huge error bars. Been watching it against an exponential model. It was running ahead and now shallowing somewhat. Next 2 weeks will be telling. Cases in the west started popping up Jan 20th with a bump around the 31. Watch the next 14 days in the west.

As for the bio weapon or not bioweapon arguement- convince me with the math. Unaltered sequence vs “new improved” sequence. Natural mutation rate vs what is in this virus in terms of alterations from original blueprint and probabilities. If the change is proportional to natural mutation rate changes there is your argument and the probabilities are the same. BUT If this thing really has 4 new sequences w/o the math its obvious by common sense. Looks like a lightning strike death vs being hit spot on by a meteor. Trust in God all others bring data.

That said, it’s here and we have to deal with it. What really matters is what is the full sequence and what does it do – what is the protocol and PPE for ordinary people and how do medical professionals treat this? I would hate be the leader making the decision on this. I think people should be setting up their emergency supplies if they don’t keep a reservoir already as a best practice. Social distance is obvious as a reasonably probable pathway for us. Start early and help the supply chain keep up. N95s supply is already strained for example. If you’ve been through a hurricane then you know that everyone makes the “oh shit” decision at about the same time which isn’t supported by infrastructure. I am grateful to the Chinese people for the extreme quarantine efforts and feel for their suffering. I hope the sacrifice works.

  14. And don’t sit next to a Chinese person on public transit. Not because you’re racist but because you’re not stupid. At the moment over 99% of the victims don’t look like me. I’m good at math.
