So now we know. Now we know what happens when you declare war on democracy. Now we know the consequences of demeaning the largest democratic vote in a nation’s history. Now we know what becomes of a political class that sneers at voters, silences their democratic voice, and libels them as racist, xenophobic know-nothings who cannot be trusted with stewardship of the nation. You get punished. You get rebelled against. You get replaced. Last night, in those extraordinary election results, we witnessed the revenge of democracy.
This from a superb post-election editorial by Spiked’s Brendan O’Neill. Podcast here.
American elites, on the Left and the Right, should recognize this as a warning about their own arrogance. But they won’t.

“Democracy fights back” indeed. Some people just don’t seem to get the message. I’d love to know who paid for all the professionally produced signs and organized the mob so quickly. EU perhaps?

I predict we will see revenge of democracy at play in the good old USA as well.
We need to wake up, the Left is becoming more entrenched in Canada and they will go far, we are a tad stunned and outright stupid. We’ve let the socialist creep take hold from kindergarten to the halls of higher learning and beyond.
It’s to the point we have have Conservatives eating their own. Conservatives cannot win being conservative, which reduces them to sham status at best.
I think Conservatives can win by being conservative. What they need to do is educate the public as to why they are right, and the left are wrong, but they don’t. They are always on he defensive and apologizing and trying to out pander the Libs.
Step #1. Educate an ignorant and disengaged electorate.
Step #2. Win elections.
Shouldn’t be hard.
Jeff, it is freaking impossible with an electorate that wants everything for free.
Hans Hermann Hoppe in his Democracy: the God That Failed, states emphatically that were he to have a choice between a monarch and democracy (rule of the masses through their elected representatives in the legislature) he would choose the former. The 19th century lawyer, newspaper editor and yes, politician wrote: “No man’s life liberty or property Is safe while the legislature is in session.”
The alternative? The Rule of Law not legislators.
That’s called leadership.
“I think Conservatives can win by being conservative.”
True. But pray tell, how do you put a backbone in a jellyfish or balls on a steer?
Vote several of them out of office, as examples to the others. All you need to do is stay home, don’t vote.
The rest of the herd will learn from such examples.
One solution is to look for an alpha female instead of a beta male.
“Conservatives cannot win being conservative,”
Ummm nope. Its their lack of conservatism – fiscal responsibility, individualism, honesty – and their lack of conviction in those fundamentals that makes them faux cons.
One reason the Conservatives lost was because Scheer didn’t offer voters an alternative. The choice was between Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum.
Correct, liberal socialist or liberal socialist lite.
Let’s see what happens in the UK now. Please do understand that the tribe will not tolerate ANY version of Brexit!
MM, the tribe was just told to shut up and sit down.
Mark, I agree. I’m worried that the left-wing, establishment elites will use the corrupt British courts to stop Brexit.
The difference between a democracy and a dictatorship is that in a democracy you vote and then take orders. In a dictatorship they don’t bother with a useless exercise as voting. You just take orders. (Heard on the Internet)
What difference does it make whether you are (mis)ruled by a Bolshevik in Brussels or a Leninist in London?
Well no. In a false democracy where there are phoney choices, what you say is true. Unfortunately that is Canada. In Britain, they just had a very real choice and the politicians are taking orders at the moment.
One remainer woman famously said “Bollocks to Brexit”. Well, the people said “Bollocks to you” and she lost her seat, let alone her pants.
We see in the British election the clear advantage of FPTP, all the remainers were kicked out, all those who promised to do Brexit at previous elections and then remained, are gone.
In most PR systems, they would still have jobs.
Funny no conservatives are talking about PR in the wake of the election, isn’t it? The Conservatives would have had the most seats under PR, not the Liberals. And lefties would not be able to deny Conservatives sests by strategic voting.
PR and ranked voting.
Proportional representation will only work when your vote is proportional to the benefit you bring to society. The reason so many socialists advocate for their version of PR is because it enables more of them to feed at the trough and dictate how we will live under a collection of misfits that have never contributed a positive beneficial iota to the country.
Poor Brendan. He still thinks BoJo will deliver Brexit. The EU are already talking about an extension to the time period for negotiation of the new trade deal. BoJo will never leave without a deal, so why offer him one anybody serious about Brexit could ever accept?
If anybody believed for a minute BoJo would actually take Britain out of the EU—and not just throw Ulster to the wolves so he could say he got the Dog’s Brexit done—the IRA or any of a number of Muslim terror cells would have made an attempt on his life long before now. They tried to murder Thatcher. Why not BoJo? Answers on a postcard.
so mr labour jerrymandering core burn was soooooo cocky and self ASSured about t’ings eh?
