Happy to hear you work in health care. Having spent a lot of time in the US, I ran across a lot of Americans who were waiting for health care (due to their health plan), and quite a few who could not afford it.
Yet the US spends twice as much on health care as Canada. A simplistic solution for Canada? Raise taxes and spend the same as the US per person. However, Canadians have consistently voted against this.
Much better solution? Eliminate the waste in health care.
A woman who was flown to London for 12-hour life-saving cancer surgery is still waiting to be operated on 18 days later.
Janet Carter-Bowers has a rare soft tissue cancer that has grown around her spine, ribs and organs, Belfast Live reports.
The woman, whose condition can only be addressed by three specialist surgeons who have not been available so far, is begging her daughters for help to get her home even if it means she will die.

Neither Canada nor the U.S. has a free market in health care. Both are centrally planned systems with the government setting prices for health care services by various means. In Canada, governments just dictate the costs of procedures and can set them to any level they like. In the U.S., they centrally plan the provision of insurance and mandate coverage for many procedures that most people would not pay for if given the choice. If Canada had the same tort law system as the U.S., our health care costs would be just as high.
Would our waiting lists be just as long? Would we have as many administrators?
Tooner mentions administrators. I took my wife to the hospital for minor knee surgery. Walking into the hospital there are two greeters sitting at the front desk. Off in the background someone is playing classical music on a grand piano – close to the Tim Hortons kiosk. On the second floor you can check-in with the electronic check-in system or speak to someone directly. There is someone there to help you check in electronically as well. This gets you to the waiting room, where you wait for hours BECAUSE THERE ARE NO DOCTORS IN THE FRIGGING HOSPITAL. The place is full of helpful helpers who help you fill out all the paperwork – that must go somewhere. But when you are ready to visit the doctor, you wait and wait and wait. BECAUSE THERE ARE NO DOCTORS IN THE FRIGGING HOSPITAL.
Who forgot to staff the hospitals with doctors?
I’ll wager a bet that in the USA they actually have doctors in the hospitals and that is why they spend more on health care.
You say that like it’s a bad thing? I have received nothing but TOP QUALITY medical care throughout my entire life. By Doctors who were very smart, very hard working, and very well compensated. I WANT my Doctor to be well compensated! I had a hip replaced a couple years ago. No waiting lists. Boom! I needed it … and it got done. Done expertly, with every high tech bit of equipment, technique and material. And it quite literally changed my life for the better. No more limping. No more constant pain.
And no insurance company is stopping any mass number of patients from receiving that exact kind of care. But if an insurance company denied someone’s “marijuana therapy” … then I am on the insurance company’s side.
You know, BMW’s cost a LOT more than a Ford Focus. Because they are much better engineered and luxurious. I almost feel guilty that I get BMW medical care while my Canadian neighbors get a rickety Ford Focus … almost … guilty … but not really. That’s the price you pay for Socialism and socialized medicine.

Joe knows nothing about America’s medical care. I have friends in Florida who get the best of care, everything from hips to hearts, America is superior. For the really stupid among us I present following. In 1986, congress enacted the emergency medical treatment and labor Act, to ensure public access to emergency services regardless of ability to pay. There are many places to get speciality treatment and surgeries much quicker than anywhere in Canada. By the way this act also applies to visitors.

And I freely acknowledge some people in the USA get excellent health care. But some don’t.
We could have that in Canada, but only if Canadians were willing to spend more money on health care. So far we’ve not voted for spending US levels of money on health care.

As a frequent loyal traveler on WestJet, I let my opinions be known to every pilot and flight attendant upon exiting the plane. “Wexit, and tell your CEO Wexit too.” I say upon leaving the plane. Part of the reason Westjet exists in the first place is due to the void created when the Cretin Lieberals screwed over Canadian Airlines and then made them merge with Air Canada, thereby sucking a ton of aviation jobs out of the West, and moving them to Quebec! I wrote and mailed a letter to Mr. Sims. If he even acknowledges it, my guess is he will be too arrogant to address our side of the issue. I made him aware that he risks alienating many loyal WestJet customers with his ill thought out comments.
He can afford to be a pompous ass. In a few days, Westjet will formally become a private company because Onex bought it this past summer. The new owners may change the airline’s management and Sims might be sent packing with, no doubt, a nice exit package.

After a 22 month wait I finally got my knee replacement. It took 16 months just to see the specialist here in B.C. for the first time. I am one of the lucky ones as I got to see a private physio therapist 16 days later, the government sponsored one was a 30 day wait.
Alan, my golfing buddy for many years took two years to get both hips done and the first one had to be done again. Yep we have superior medical care. Three hips to get two. The end result was fine because the surgeon was the best but he could only work with what he had.

I went to see my GP as I was not well. He checked me over and said you have 2 choices, go home and have an ambulance take you to hospital that night or go across Burrard St and check in with ER at St Pauls hospital now. I did just that and was admitted to the Cardiology wing. Two weeks later I received a pacemaker and was out of the hospital the next day.

One of the biggest problems with Canadian healthcare is it is free to non citizens. No nation with so few tax payers can provide 1st world service of every category to everyone who shows up and has never contributed 10 cents. Also the Family Reunification Immigration program brings in more and more and the taxpayers can never keep up. Probably equal to adding a city of 1M every year all wanting free shit. Start there.
