One of the all time greats; it’s on my easy listening playlist. Now, for the trivia question: how old was the actual girl from Ipanema who inspired the song?
About a month ago, Kate recommended Playing the Indian Card by Stephen Roney. I finally finished it today and would recommend it to anyone iterested in the topic of Canada’s native peoples. It’s well written, well sourced and thought provoking and runs counter to the narrative pushed by the press and politicians today. It’s a fairly long read but worth it. “We’re increasing our (defense) spending by 70% over 10 years…” P.M. Justin Trudeau to Pres. Trump at NATO meeting in the U.K. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_IuedHs3uw (4.25-30) timeline
—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
L- Over 10 years, while the other members at the meeting about noted goals to raise their budgets to over 4 years. Maybe, that is why Pres. Trump joked about putting Canada’s defense budget on a “payment plan”.
After shrinking the Canadian economy over Trudeau’s 2nd term, 2% of Canada’s GDP might turn out to be the same DND budget that counts as the current 1.4 %(1.2%?) of GNP. P.M. Two Face has a plan, that would also achieve Trudeau’s plan to decrease C02 emissions, too.
P.M. Trudeau list of defense budget increases include e.i. upgrades in aircraft ( he means buying 30 year old F18 variants, not current state of the art F-35s, the lack of which makes Canada a junior partner in NATO and NORAD.
Pres. Trump knows that. Pres. Trump also knows that P.M. Justin Trudeau, in his first term, withdrew R.C.A.F. F-18s from bombing the Islamic State along with our allies. Justin Trudeau’s regime sending Cdn. Armed Forces into Africa, had them stationed outside the country and not in a combat arms role, as they had been in Afghanistan under P.M. Harper. Is Canada a reliable ally ? Under P.M. Justin Trudeau, not so much.
Without nuclear powered submarines and ice breakers, Canada can’t even assert it northern sovereignty if China sends either of those into Canadian territory. I suspect that Trudeau would claim that he’d send the Canadian Rangers in kayaks with Tikka T-3 (7.62×51) rifles to protect our north from incursions by China’s nuclear submarines and ice breakers.
One of he consequences of electorate replacement program is that a lot of imports would much rather see Canadian Forces shoot our traditional allies than our enemies.
That’s exactly it Colin People migrate here to get away from dictatorship and oppression and then immediately try and turn their new country into the one they just left
Except that hasn’t happened, isn’t happening, and isn’t going to happen no matter how much you want it to. You’ve been wrong for literally 50 years every step of the way.
Just relax and get comfortable with being majority-minority. You have no business complaining.
Terry, yep because they don’t migrate for freedom, they migrate to mooch. Freedom is a foreign concept to them (it is like explaining sex to UnMe). And the reason their countries suck is them. It isn’t whitey, it isn’t colonialism, it is them and only them. Their incompetence and low IQ inevitably leads to the countries they live in turning into shitholes.
If it was up to me I would pull Canada out of Nato and focus our military on home defense and asserting our sovereignty in the North. Does any Canadian seriously think the Euros would come to our defense if attacked by the Russians or Chinese? Not a chance. But when they had a problem in the Balkans and Libya the cry for help was loud and clear. When I see thousands of grave stones in France and Holland it angers me to the point of nausea.
The Russians and Americans are fully invested in the Artic and now the Chinese are moving in as well. Their incursions are designed to weaken Canadian claims and they are succeeding. These countries do not want a strong Canada that will compete with them. They want Canada to remain as a vault for raw materials. Having weak leadership like Turdeau is a big help and one of the main reasons they all wanted Harper gone.
Harper was not remotely serious about the military.
Yet the F35 and new ship programs were still advancing.
And Canadian forces got to keep … tanks, yes recall that Cretin wanted to scrap them altogether.
But you’re arguing with a disingenuous demagogue. Why? It is much better to insult him. That is all he deserves.
It’s all part of his feminist shtik. Cringeworthy.
This should be a “Top of the Hour” news story in Canada’s MSM but I’m sure it isn’t. I wonder though, is it getting ANY play? (I quit Canadian news a long time ago so I stand corrected if it’s getting its due)
**BREAKING: Ambassador Nikki Haley calls out Canada’s U.N. “deal with the devil.”**
**”Canada has for a long time been balanced and fair-minded towards Israel at the United Nations. It has opposed the pull of the anti-Israel culture.
But Canada is now seeking one of the rotating two-year seats on the Security Council. It faces a vote in the General Assembly.”
“Two weeks ago, Canada surprised Israel’s friends by voting for a North Korean resolution that challenges the legitimacy of Israel. This is a resolution that Canadian governments for years have voted against.”**
Increasing pay to existing military and civilian DND employees could be considered increased defense spending, it just does not increase the actual defense of anything.
I see they are still celebrating the murder of 14 girls 30 years ago in Montreal, yet are still unwilling to acknowledge that it was a muslim who did the shooting.
Some comments on this in yesterday’s Reader’s Tips. Don’t miss Mark Steyn ‘s take. The incident is being used as a political club to hammer in the anti-gun, anti-men, pro-women message. I thought it had receded a few years ago and was greatly relieved to have the awful incident fading into history (as you say, a Muslim killing), but with Trudeau commemorating the 30 year old incident is back big time. There was a brief clip of him at one of the vigils and I found his words to be totally obsequious. What is inappropriate is that there us no acknowledgement that the world has moved on. Women have significant opportunities without people like Trudeau pandering to them for political gain. Identity politics is offensive and stokes feelings of victimhood. Using a tragic event from 30 years ago for political fodder is sick. It is also offensive that the Muslim angle has never been acknowledged, when that is at the essence of the killings. (Sorry for the long post, but seeing Trudeau exploiting this already mischaracterized event to suit his political agenda really got to me.)
?
what?
lepine aint a muzzie handle?
I gave up decades ago nagging the MSM to USE THE S.O.B’S REAL NAME.
Indeed. There’s some seriously mentally ill, self-victimhood out there. Why this remains something to celebrate by the feminazis and now, native wymyn, is mind boggling.
Sure, it was a tragedy, 30 years ago, but it wasn’t WWII. Get over it, but, that’s the catch. These are professional victimizer involved now, to wave their flags, again, at their oh so oppressed lives.
And the media is only too happy to continue the mirage.
And another muslim shooting up a base in Florida. When will we ever wake up?
A nothing-burger, but it’s Saturday morning. Andrew Coyne has just jumped ship, from the National Post to the Globe and Mail. His first column, prominently displayed on the G&M’s main page, is a decent effort explaining why and how, from the Throne Speech, the Justin Trudeau government will be completely ignoring the West, while pleasing Central Canadian leftists.
Will post when I can get to our PC. My wife is still sleeping.
We remember the flap four years ago, during the first Justin Trudeau victory, when Andrew Coyne wanted to publish an op-ed column endorsing the Trudeau Liberals. He was the National Post’s opinion editor at the time — so the senior editors spiked his column. In a huff, Coyne accepted a demotion to an op-ed columnist, which he had done up until two weeks ago. At the same time, during the first Liberal election victory, word finally seeped out that Jonathan Kay — then a major opinion force at the NP — had ghost-written Trudeau’s self-serving autobiography. Both events did not ender conservatives to the National Post.
Over the past several year, the G&M has been getting hammered, through its “comments” section at the bottom of each written piece, by conservative readers upset with the obvious pc, left-wing bias at the paper. Occasionally the heavy criticism — say by 95% of the comments posted for loony-left pieces — would be quite strong and sarcastic. So perhaps the Andrew Coyne hire (poaching?) is a tepid attempt by the paper to appease the many conservative subscribers. (The reason why so many conservative readers read the paper is because the paper’s Business and Investment sections are generally free of the woke, pc bias that dominates the remaining section of the paper. The stock market info an discussions in the G&M is top notch, and investors need the paper’s info to tend to their portfolios).
Back to Andrew Coyne. He is a steadfast member of the Laurentian elite. His father was the Bank of Canada head, fired during the “Coyne Affair” — and son Andrew went to the best, expensive private schools and universities. His younger sister Deborah was romantically involved with Pierre Trudeau, and was part of the leadership opposing the Meech and Charlottetown accords. When Andrew was more conservative, at the NP, he would speak at a few Civitas and Manning Centre conferences. He was kind enough to give generous time one-and -one chats with the small proletariat conservatives at the meetings (including unknown me), and back then he was getting started as a media celeb as an “At Issue” commentator for CBC News. Perhaps the mingling with CBC News types got to him, for these days he is mostly a centrist, neither conservative nor a CBC-left writer. But a Toronto-elitist he is.

If I may, with all due respect, corrrect you. It’s not terribly important, but James Coyne, Andrew’s father, is Deborah Coyne’s uncle and Andrew and Deborah are first cousins.

I think his move to the G&M has been speculated for some time, ever since Margaret Wente left.
