“We are going digital-only outside of Ontario as more and more of our commuter readers are using their smartphones, laptops and tablets to access their news on their way to and from work,” Torstar said in a statement to CityNews.
“This trend, coupled with a corresponding decline in print advertising volumes, has decreased the need for a free daily commuter newspaper in these cities.”
The closure will result in 73 job losses.
In October Torstar announced that it was suspending its quarterly dividend after reporting a quarterly loss of $40.9 million. Torstar stock, which soared to over $30 back in January 2004, has fallen to .50 cents.

Well clearly a second bailout will be needed
I’m saddened by the demise of newspapers (though not so much the radical lefty ones). Our local daily, more than 100 years in business, has just recently cut back to a weekly tabloid, and even at that its survival is questionable. Even though it has a leftward slant, it always welcomed letters of up to 400 words from all kinds, so we conservatives always had the opportunity to set the record straight. Sad to see it go.
I taught Jozie how to retrieve the morning paper from the end of the driveway … now what trick will I teach my next dog?
“Can You Teach a Coal Miner to Code?” -Wired
Zuckerberg said yes, Bloomberg no.
I’d say the latter berg is fundamentally right, you can’t teach journalists to code. They are very reluctant.
Ezra sends his condolences…

METRO MUMS LAMENT DEMISE OF GLOBALIST MOUTHPIECE
(Staff) — In another outbreak of right wing extremism, the Toronto Star ceased publication because apparently nobody wanted to read Liberal propaganda in such an awkward form when it was relatively easy to access it on line. The Harper government is thought to be the main cause of this problem although sources tell The Star that the Trump administration may have played a role.
Nor can climate change be ruled out.
Terribly news, I haven’t been this upset since I got my first bj.
I heard, Colonialista, that after your first BJ you went to your local bar and ordered 10 shots of whiskey lined up on the bar. You knocked them back and the bartender then asked what you were celebrating. You told him “My first BJ”. He smiled then offered you another shot on the house, to which you replied, “No thanks, if 10 didn’t get rid of the taste, another one won’t help.”
LOL.
I’m glad you took that in the spirit intended. I have nailed more than a few friends using that story in assorted social settings. Can’t explain why it is so entertaining to see a grown man blushing in public, especially in mixed company, but it is. All you need for a set-up is a half-decent segue, of which you gave generously.
Ha! Ha! Ha! ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!
Hope you didn’t pay more than 50 cents!
If you did, you paid way too much!
Plus, have you seen the red rag lately? It’s literally, along with the Mop and Pail, half the size of National Post.
COLON and what was his , the blower’s ,name????
You don’t remember?
Unfortunately many who use only their phones or tablets to read tend to “read” very little. They would be the poorest or worse informed people on the planet. To say goodbye permanently to the Star would cause me zero pain. Even reading on the computer requires critical analysis skills that most seem to lack.
To say goodbye permanently to the Star would cause me zero pain.
Actually that would cause me joy and spontaneous dancing 🙂
Yes now everyone can listen to constant rants that Canadians are racist bastards, as they drive home from work. And doesn’t everyone want to listen to Heather Mallick rant that men are sexist, rapist, pigs?
I was a newspaper reading kid in the seventies and I learned to hate PET reading the Ottawa Journal. Its demise led me to discover leftwing pinko & fake news from the Ottawa Citizen. F**k the brown Star and its lying scumbag neo-Marxist writers and editors and a big thankyou to market forces culling the weak.
$600 million was not enough? Perhaps if the CBC competition was ended?
Too bad it didn’t happen sooner.
They serve no useful purpose other than bird cage liner.
Clearly you don’t have a wood stove.
Wow. That half a billion dollars sure disappeared fast.
I like where this is trending and look forward to their demise and that of all their ilk.
My budgie will miss them. I won’t.
50 cents a share. Let’s buy it.
All useful idiots outlive their usefulness eventually.
Who needs the Toronto Star when the Libranos and the Chinese communists find it faster and cheaper to spread propaganda on social media?
FWIW, few hacks will learn to code. The well-connected ones will go into PR, which is all they ever did in the first place.
Finally some good news for a change…..
The Metro wasn’t _bad_ until the Star bought it out. Then it turned into a rag. Instead of most of the paper being local content, it turned into two, sometimes three local stories, then a bunch of reprints from the Star itself, plus ads begging you to go online to the Star to read more about such-and-such. And yeah, rampant leftism. The opinion writers were _dreadful_ that way.
My wife & mother in law will miss the daily Sudoku puzzles from them. That’s about the only regret I can throw its way.
Yeah, I used to pick one up now and then as the Metro, but not that often. Just reprinted MSM trash most of the time, but there were the local bits. Once it changed hands and rebranded itself, I haven’t touched one. I’ve seen fewer around, also. Good riddance.
So 73 Communists got laid off..?? Ha ha ha ha ….
Looks good on em. Pah, I could give a shit.
Only “good” thing about that propaganda rag was that it burned when lit.
Now that its “burning” once again, I rejoice.!
Never fear, the new government department of “Saying nice things about dear leader” will snap up the most obsequious.
The rest?
Obviously too “conservative” for the new order.
They will go on the scrap pile of useful idiots, who have served Gerald’s purpose.
Like all the fools who voted Liberal in 2015.
I’m sure they could get jobs in the patch. Bwahahaha.
In the US, McClatchy is a big newspaper publisher. They have seen their stock go from about $740 a share in 2005 to $0.38 today. (This is after a 10 to 1 reverse split to keep from getting booted off the NYSE. The real price would have been $74 to $0.03 per share).
What is really funny is that most of these papers have a business section written by self styled journalists with expertise in business. Heh.
Ahh yes, the Toronto Red Star, aka “Pravda, By the Lake”!
Won’t be sad to see them go, Rather amusing to see their death throes, like the bad Terminator when it fell in the molten steel!
‘digital’ ha ha ha !!!!
reminds me of ‘digitalis’, used to treat congestive heart failure, a serious heart condition.
ha ha ha !!!!!
I SWIFTLY stopped a t star subscription the day they featured some rock musician ‘oasis’ featuring
a putrid description of his yellow caked-on ear wax. that was waaaaaaaaaay back in the 90s.
