          A Conservative leadership candidate’s longshot private member’s bill to privatize the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has been overwhelmingly rejected by the House of Commons, including members of his own caucus.

          Brad Trost’s Bill C-308 was defeated by a vote of 260-6 at second reading Wednesday. Just five other members of Parliament — all of them Tories — backed the Saskatchewan MP’s bill: Ontario MP Harold Albrecht, Saskatchewan MP David Anderson, and Alberta MPs Blake Richards, Arnold Viersen, and Kevin Sorenson.

          None of the MPs who voted in favour of the so-called Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Privatization Act have endorsed Trost in the leadership race or his rival, Ontario MP Kellie Leitch, who is calling for the CBC to be “dismantled.”
          Albrecht and Richards have endorsed Ontario MP Erin O’Toole, while Viersen, Richards, and Sorenson have sided with Saskatchewan MP Andrew Scheer.
          Many of the contenders for the top Tory job either skipped the vote or were otherwise not in the House, including O’Toole, Scheer, Leitch, Ontario MPs Michael Chong and Lisa Raitt, as well as Alberta MP Deepak Obhrai.

    1. “it’s time to sell ” The CBC is unsaleable. It can only be shut down. Any buyer would inherit the unions and contracts making profitability impossible. The real estate, equipment, and licenses can be sold but piecemeal in lots, preferably to different buyers..

  10. Scheer could cut off the CBC smears, misinformation and false narratives (read somewhere rich people with get $50K from his tax cuts) by simply vowing to fire sale its assets, liquidate what’s left and cancel contracts, maybe keeping some radio.

    Barton et al would forget their fear of a Tory win on Liberal grounds for their own self-interest and debate the damage to their careers, I mean the nation and likely revert to a high dudgeon million candlepower navel gaze, forgetting all about the election.

A legal point: from memory I recall a Supreme Court of Canada ruling, years ago, that TV ads can show brief snippets of newspaper articles or broadcasts, without violating standard copyright rules, given the need to advance discussions through free speech. The CBC intrusion agsinst the Conservatives jumps the shark, where the giant corporation has become so corrupt, they do not even know enough to be circumspect — and this is especially true right in the middle of an election.
