An internal ethics report has alleged mismanagement and abuses of authority at the highest levels of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees even as the organization faced an unprecedented crisis after US funding cuts.
 
The allegations included in the confidential report by the agency’s ethics department are now being scrutinized by UN investigators. […]
 
the allegations include senior management engaging in “sexual misconduct, nepotism, retaliation, discrimination and other abuses of authority, for personal gain, to suppress legitimate dissent, and to otherwise achieve their personal objectives.”
 
One senior official named in the report has left the organization due to “inappropriate behavior” linked to the investigation, UNRWA said, while another has resigned for what the agency called “personal reasons.”

Ruthie Blum: Revelations of rampant wrongdoing in the corridors of the United Nations Relief Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) couldn’t have shamed a more worthy organization. Though normally it’s not nice to gloat over the misfortunes of others, the schadenfreude elicited by the news of inappropriate behavior going on behind the walls of this particularly vile organization was warranted.

    It is past ironic that countries like Saudi Arabia sit in on Women’s Rights commissions or Third World dictatorships (too lazy to find out exactly which ones) sit in on Human Rights commissions.
    When we get a workable majority (that is, don’t have to worry about RINOs) in both Houses come November 2020, we should resign from the U.N., defund everything that it does, and kick it out of the U.S.

      Why should we care if the UN is a forum for attacking Israel? Israel is a member. When Israel quits then concerned Canadians should consider quitting.

    What would be different from normal?

  6. The UN is a longstanding Liberal fetish. For the life of me, I have never, ever understood why.

    Our foreign service has been blighted by high-minded diplomats cooing and billing over this organization for decades. Liberal governments – like moths to a flame – consistently attempt to gain that magic seat on the Security Council.

    To what end? To what gain? In terms of our national interest, the UN can offer nothing – absolutely nothing – to Canada.

    (On the other hand, it does offer a way to be shed of Trudeau fils; it would be well worth the money to see him disappear to New York on some cushy but essentially pointless UN sinecure for a good number of years.)

  8. We need to be members of NORAD. That’s all that matters. Except that we’re shameless, smug, freeloaders of American security measures. We should gladly give Americans $10 billion a year ($250+) for every Canadian and punt UN membership into the gutter.

  9. There were Palestinian refugees in 1948. There are none today. 71 years means virtually all the refugees are dead. The people living in refugee camps today do so by choice.

    1. Not necessarily. The people who live on the West Bank and in Gaza do so because their Muslim “brothers” in the neighboring countries (Egypt and Jordan, and almost neighbors Syria and Lebanon) refuse to accept them as immigrants. Ironically, almost all the “Palestinians” were only second, and at most third, generation in the West Bank at the time of Israeli independence, having emigrated from mostly Jordan and Syria.
      It is better for those countries in their campaign to destroy Israel to have a permanent underclass of refugees who are taught to hate Israel almost from birth.

    2. since what we now call Palestine was part of Jordan, until the founding of Israel, how can these people be considered refuges if they are living in Jordan today? Seems contradictory.
