A few years back a couple of dear friends showed up here at the trap shack. Neither knew each other but both
hold a Ph.D. One in the biological sciences (he’s a research scientist) the other is an electrical engineer.
As the night wore on and the liquor flowed the engineer asked the scientist how he establishes mathematical parameters when modelling. The scientist explained how the numbers were arrived at. This failed to satisfy the engineer who began a cross examination.
It became clear that the scientist could not deliver a satisfactory answer. He stumbled and grasped in his attempt to explain. To be fair a biologist is typically no match for an engineer when it comes to mathematics. The host stepped in a called it a draw but it really wasn’t.
The point of all this is that modelling has a wide standard. Do those who are setting the standard really understand what it is they are doing? Do they have sufficient mathematical capabilities to set the algorithms that will produce numbers that can withstand scrutiny?
I have another friend who also has a Ph.D in biology. I have discussed this with him and his response was, “you start with the premise that all models are wrong.” Seems reasonable.
All models are wrong. They are, by their nature, simplified representations of the real thing that cannot include all real variables.
That doesn’t mean that they can’t be useful, within defined conditions and parameters. Global circulations models as predictors of future climate are not even wrong, that’s how far off I think they’ll be.

For the average worker, there was even a small increase in the pay packet as the increase in CPP premiums was more than offset by the decrease in EI premiums and the increase in the basic exemption. So the pay packet has been increased slightly but the taxpayer is still poorer because of the cost of so many goods and services.
The real losers are the small businesses who cannot raise their prices to cover all the increased costs coming their way. The big boys get rebates; individual taxpayers get refunds; those in between get really dinged.

A few years back a couple of dear friends showed up here at the trap shack. Neither knew each other but both
hold a Ph.D. One in the biological sciences (he’s a research scientist) the other is an electrical engineer.
As the night wore on and the liquor flowed the engineer asked the scientist how he establishes mathematical parameters when modelling. The scientist explained how the numbers were arrived at. This failed to satisfy the engineer who began a cross examination.
It became clear that the scientist could not deliver a satisfactory answer. He stumbled and grasped in his attempt to explain. To be fair a biologist is typically no match for an engineer when it comes to mathematics. The host stepped in a called it a draw but it really wasn’t.
The point of all this is that modelling has a wide standard. Do those who are setting the standard really understand what it is they are doing? Do they have sufficient mathematical capabilities to set the algorithms that will produce numbers that can withstand scrutiny?
I have another friend who also has a Ph.D in biology. I have discussed this with him and his response was, “you start with the premise that all models are wrong.” Seems reasonable.
All models are wrong. They are, by their nature, simplified representations of the real thing that cannot include all real variables.
That doesn’t mean that they can’t be useful, within defined conditions and parameters. Global circulations models as predictors of future climate are not even wrong, that’s how far off I think they’ll be.

Two things that I find annoying.
1. Coyne claims the carbon tax is the most efficient way of fighting climate change. Where is the efficiency in the government taking your money and then giving 90% of it back to you?
2. Canada has to reduce CO2 emissions by over 200 megatonnes by 2030. Do Canadians realize that amount is staggeringly huge? It is more than our entire oil and gas industry. It is larger than our entire transportation industry. It is more than all the energy we use to heat our homes.
And while we struggle to reduce our energy use will they still ship US coal through a B.C. port to China?
Steve Canadians can not even figure out why their pay checks get smaller and do not link it to Criminal levels of taxation, how do you expect them to understand that what the Liberals and why the Liberals will not explain Carbon Taxes is because to implement the Paris Accord that Trudeau and the Liberals signed Canada up for means no more transportation. Actually, the Lieberals were very clever in their last “payroll tax” increase. For the average worker, there was even a small increase in the pay packet as the increase in CPP premiums was more than offset by the decrease in EI premiums and the increase in the basic exemption. The carbon tax is a different puppy; it’s very much a stealth tax that – as applied – will incrementally increase the cost of everything. So the pay packet has been increased slightly but the taxpayer is still poorer because of the cost of so many goods and services.
The real losers are the small businesses who cannot raise their prices to cover all the increased costs coming their way. The big boys get rebates; individual taxpayers get refunds; those in between get really dinged.
Coyne is, and always will be a Liberal mouthpiece. Even when he is apparently criticizing Der Dauphin, it really isn’t, it’s just a show to appear “unbiased” every now and then.
