    First off they let kindergarten teachers “in the poorest neighborhoods” rate kids using scales measuring inattention, hyperactivity, defiant behavior, aggression and prosociality. I’m sure that was accurate. Then they gathered the pay stubs some 31 years later and corrected for variations in IQ and family adversity, I can feel the accuracy tightening. They conclude that prosociality (the tendency to help someone who is hurt or invite someone into a game) leads to higher incomes by as much as $12,000 higher while inattention lowers income by $17,000.

    The study focused only on children in the poorest neighborhoods and did not compare the results to children in other socioeconomic conditions. Yet they were able to correct for variations in IQ and family adversity and concluded that the more social children are the more money they tend to make as adults. Why aren’t these researchers building our rocket ships?

    I was quite inattentive as a child. When my aunt asked me how I liked kindergarten I told her “been there, done that” and continued playing with my dinky cars (she recounted the story to me years later). I’m glad nobody told me I was inattentive until I was a grown up with a good paying job. The problem with these types of studies is that children will be labeled (mis-identified) as a result and then taught that they have a problem that needs fixing by the system. By the time these children are full grown they are totally dependent on the system for help. Leave our kids alone!

    Suncor, Canada’s biggest oil and gas company, is considered one of the safest Canadian energy companies to invest in, given its integrated structure and diversified business mix.

      1. The fact that the share price has gone down in the last year isn’t significant in itself. A lot of stocks go through cycles and that might be a partial explanation. However, there’s a lot to be said for market sentiment and I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of investors are dumping their shares because of the news.

        I was never impressed with the stock. For one thing, it’s hopelessly in hock over its ears. Normally, a company should have a debt-equity ratio of less than 0.5, though that can be higher, depending on the type of business it’s involved in. Whenever I looked as SNC-L’s financial statements, I calculated that value to be well over 1.0. That’s not a good sign, especially if it stays high for several years.

        I haven’t looked at it for a long time, and, if I remember correctly, the reason was that it didn’t have at least 3 consecutive years of turning a profit. Again, that’s not a good sign.

        I also avoided Bombardier for similar reasons. Soon after I inherited my father’s shares (which I advised him not to buy in the first place), I dumped that lot as well. For one thing, I needed the cash and, second, I didn’t want to have any part of that company.

        Even without the politic associations, those two firms are simply not worth investing in.
