What is additionally ridiculous about this incident and the Covington Catholic one is that these are just kids (teens) acting like teens. In each case we have discovered that the media was mistaken in their assumptions about the incident, but even if that were not the case, there is no justification for the moral panic. When I taught school, I noticed that kids tended to settle down and start behaving like adults in about grade 12. In grades 9 and 10, they are rambunctious, mischievous, and full of energy. Sometimes they behave like goofs. It’s normal. To turn their boisterous behaviour into a narrative about disrespect for natives is ludicrous. Oh, and where is the outrage about the Antifa’s? They are both older (mostly) and deliberately nasty. What a sick society we live in.

When I was a kid – a very long time ago – we (all white) kids would bring out our cap guns on a weekend and play cowboys and Indians. We’d regularly switch sides from one week to the next. We were unaware how disrespectful we were being. I’m guessing that doesn’t happen anymore. I’m glad I’m old.
Yes wonderful times playing cowboys and indians with those cap guns and bows and arrows. No one called the police because you carried two guns around your waist that went bang, bang when the caps worked properly. What a sweet smell those fired caps let off. We were not being disrespectful … just having some clean fun. Both indians and cowboys play died.
Cowboys and Indians was fun, but I hated that cap gun smell, but that was just me.

A group of noble natives came to our public school to put on a powwow in the 70s. I was busy in the office so missed out on it, but afterwards one of the P.E. teachers told us about the odor of marijuana in the boys’ washrooms. There were two adult washrooms in the school, but they went to the students’ washrooms.

Nearly 40 years ago, I read an article in a Lutheran church magazine about how a boys hockey team showed how racist they were.
From what I remember, the team in question consisted of mainly, if not all, whites. They were in, I think, a tournament against a team from a reserve, so its members were aboriginals. The natives out-scored the other team and the other players weren’t happy about it. The way the article was written, it was as if they weren’t pleased about losing to a non-white team and were, therefore, motivated by racism and bigotry.
What the writer failed to consider, or chose not to, was the fact that the setting was two sports teams playing against each other. One wants one’s side to win and, if the other team is ahead, it’s not uncommon to voice one’s opinion about it, though not necessarily being gentlemanly or otherwise charitable about it. I rather doubt that the boys did so because they were racists or bigots. I think they simply didn’t like losing.
But that article was written when the Lutheran clergy was becoming decidedly leftist and excruciatingly politically correct, so I’m not surprised that the white team was being pilloried.
Can’t have those kids giving a bad reputation to the game of Skatey Punchy.
