Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Speaking of women who run the world. Canada’s Minister of Health Ginette Petitpas Taylor has released the new Canadian Food Guide. Is it coincidence that a Liberal health ministry would eliminate meat, most of which is grown in Western Canada, from the previous guide?? How will Eastern Canadian dairy producers handle the new guide that discourages the use of milk??

Canada’s New Food Guide is a step towards Veganism. It was a much discussed topic in 2018 at SDA.
It took 3 years and 37 scientists to come up with this. Our new Minister of Health Ginette Petitpas Taylor, a Social Studies graduate of the Université de Moncton delivered an enthusiastic speech introducing the Guide to Canadians.
Personally, I will not give up a weekly serving of freshly cooked lean beef or pork tenderloin, milk in coffee/ tea, nor European cheeses, in moderation. Their diet of water and plant based material is not a problem personally, but that occasional piece of dark chocolate is cheating material and good for the soul. That stays. ( for me )
Most will have a problem with no booze. The Government will have a conflict of interest in that department. It’s their tax moola. In order for them to enforce this they would have to close all liquor stores, all restaurants, the beef and dairy industry. Not going to happen.
Our new Health Minister has a lovely Acadian French Accent. I placed it from the Moncton region and was correct. Acadians eat well, I doubt whether she will give up the lovely Acadian Steak pies at Christmas, the fantastic baked sweets and squares, the beautiful white homemade bread / rolls and all the fish, deep fried clams, lobster rolls, corn boils and Moosehead Beer, a Minister of the Crown can buy. They like their vino and Canadian Club.
Tip#1: Want to drink more H2O? Get a Soda Stream kit, use mine since two years now and I love it.
Tip#2: Get 2-3 CO2 cans, so you aren’t always running out.
Tip#3: Bring empty canister for exchange/ refill to Canadian Tire. It is the best place, no hassles.
Got any tips?
Yeah, I know, shut up Nancy.
Do you flavor your water with the soda stream? I’ve been thinking of getting one. Can you make a bottle of soda stream water and refrigerate it in like a liter bottle ?
Not asking for a friend
No, generally I use plain filtered water. I sometimes add raspberries or cucumber slices to the fizzed water. The ginger ale and orange concentrate tastes like the no name brand stuff that one can buy at the grocery store. I have purchased them for guests, in the past but haven’t tried any other flavors. I try to avoid sugared drinks. As far as refridgerating leftovers after use, it keeps longer than pop, it is surprisingly long lasting. The one liter bottles come with reusable screw bottle caps. One can purchase extra bottles separately. This saves a lot of recycling time and money. I used to buy Club Soda. I reuse only a few bottles and I refresh them by washing them with a bit of white vinegar and water.
I really enjoy this system. If you have any other questions, feel free.
I admit a bad diet soda habit … although not nearly as bad as PDJT’s Diet Coke habit. Oldy-time Fresca is my vice (and use it as a sweeter substitute to Gin and Tonic). It is one of my few vices … time to try Sodastream as my own version of a nicotine patch … hahaha ha ha ha
Thanks for the reminder.
@ 12:15 Kenji
If you like a good gin and tonic try a squeeze of fresh lemon, lime or grapefruit juice with the sodastreamed water and gin. * see note below about this.
Diet “Fresca” has “aspartame” as a sweetener. That stuff is BAD news. Read up on it and you will give it up in a New York minute. For sweeteners, they say the best ones are “Stevia”, “Xylitol”, “Erythritol” and a product called “Yacon Syrup”. I have no idea where to get these in San Francisco but of these four, my dental hygienist recommended “Xylitol”, she said that she uses it because she changed her diet to be ‘gluten’ free.
Also, read up on the benefits of blackstrap molasses. It is supposed to be good for one’s health.
* Diet Fresca contents:
Carbonated water, citric acid, concentrated grapefruit juice, potassium citrate, aspartame, potassium sorbet, acacia gum, acesulfame potassium, natural flavors, glycerol ester of Rosen, potassium benzoate, calcium disodium EDTA, and carob bean gum.
Follow up with me later and let me know how you make out with this, if you wish. Good luck.
Reply: Additional info to 1:09 pm from NR to Kenji:
Freaking machine has monsters in it, spelling on potassium ‘sorbet’ should read as potassium ‘sorbate’ instead.
Ester of ‘Rosen’ should be ester of ‘rosin’ instead.
I know what I typed, the computer changes things just to bug us. I noticed you mentioned this lately too.
OMG! That voice!

“peoplekind” don’t you mean mankind ?/? (sarcasm off)
Canada’s food guide is just one more waste of taxpayers money. A department that does not need to exist. They produce nothing and suck up money like hundreds of other useless government departments.
Exactly. Why do we need a federal minister of health? We have one in each province. I see what my city and provincial taxes pay for. Are the feds supplying clean drinking water? Paving the roads? Electricity? Fighting fires? Building bridges beside the Gordie Howe? The feds provide very little benefit to everyday living and the provinces could easily provide what little they do for a fraction of the cost.
“Why do we need a federal minister of health?”
Well, there is a need for an international and interprovincial coordinating function at the federal level. Whether that requires a full-blown department and cabinet minister is another question.
“The feds provide very little benefit to everyday living and the provinces could easily provide what little they do for a fraction of the cost.”
Constitutionally, we are structured so that the provinces (and municipalities) provide those functions anyway, not the feds, so you’re really making an entirely false comparison. And of course, the provincial governments are no better at doing anything “for a fraction of the cost” than the feds are.
Well I am all for reduced government JJM. I don’t give a flying fcuk about the constitution or the power it gives to take my or your hard-earned money but I do give a shit identifying how my money is spent and the feds don’t spend it they burn it.
Here’s how to contact Morneau and his gang of pyros: budget2019@canada.ca
Maybe you can reassure them that they can make up all the departments and crown corporations they want to better serve their constitutional serfs. Maybe we can get the monthly debt interest up well over the measly 2 billion it stands at now.
Ooops–sorry–typo.!
My comment on Minister of Health and her revised ”Canada Food Guide” should have read:
”Speaking of women who run the world. Canada’s Minister of Health Ginette Petitpas Taylor has released the new Canadian Food Guide. Is it coincidence that a Liberal health ministry would eliminate meat, most of which is grown in Western Canada, and milk that was a staple in the previous guide?? How will Eastern Canadian dairy producers handle the new guide that discourages the use of milk?? How will Western beef producers accept the new guide??”
They’ve taken alcohol away from our diet. Cannabis?? No problem.

The topic is SHARP, that is, Sexual Harassment / Assault Response and Prevention Training. It seems Military personnel have to take these courses. As a result, personnel has had to stand down from training exercises in order to attend the SHARP training. This does not sit well with some because it takes away from what is most important in the course of their work. A shortage of experienced personnel sometimes arises. That can lead to dangerous situations. There are some who think Military personnel and the Military is doomed, as a result of having to take such needless training as SHARP.
It is obvious that there is a lack mature people even in the Military. That, is where the shame lies.
For a funnier look at the situation, see this ‘drill’ in progress:
