U.S.T.R Robert Lighthizer: U.S. Closing in on NAFTA Agreement With Mexico…
Diametrically, in Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has doubled-down on the retention of the fatal flaw and does not want an expanded domestic manufacturing base. The enviro-nuts of his base just will not support it. Therefore, Canada is loggerheads with the United States because Canada is demanding to retain their NAFTA access to the U.S. market, and simultaneously retain their ability to broker imported Chinese goods.
[…]
If they come to an agreement, two key issues are resolved which puts even more leverage and pressure on Canada: First, the biggest downside concern for the U.S. agriculture sector would be belayed. Second, it isolates Canada providing Prime Minister Trudeau an excuse (political cover) to take a knee – presuming he’s not an idiot.

“……presuming he’s not an idiot.”
Ah, the fallacies of presumption.
Yes I saw that too 🙂
Or presuming he doesn’t want to run an anti-US election.
Yeah po’ing the percentage of eligible voters that depend on that 20 percent of our trade with the US and giving them a reason to vote.
Yeah that should go over well.
Then again we could stick with the first theory that PM Sockmonkey doesn’t have a clue what he’s doing.
Liberals run anti-us elections every time a republican is the president and it always works. ALWAYS. Sock puppet vs literally who? Scheer. Yeah that’s going to work out well.
Sock puppet v Scheer? You repeat yourself.
The Canadian Media have great angst with (todays) Italy meeting with Trump…Hmm was it NOT Italy that stuck the wooden stake in the Canadian/EU trade deal…
The EU trade deal with Japan is a huge rejection of Germany… Germany hates Japan MORE than they hate America
The blogger does not have a clue.
The issue that stalls the negotiations is the the *US* intransigence on the 5 year expiry clause and the end to the dispute settlement mechanism. If the US were to drop that you would see a resolution fairly quickly on auto parts.
Trump offered to drop the sunset clause at the G7 talks. Trudeau kicked him uno where in return.
Tch, tch, shouldn’t let the truth get in the way of the Liberal narrative.
He claims he did but that means nothing coming from someone who constantly lies. What he actually said would only be known if some released a recording. I doubt there was any unequivocal promise to drop the sunset clause.
More importantly, he held his own press conference where he insisted their would be a sunset clause and there was only a discussion on the details. This news conference by Trump is why Trudeau responded with the previously stated Canadian position on the sunset clause.
Lastly, if a single news conference by Trudeau was enough to convince Trump to retract his alleged offer then the offer was not made in good faith.
Bottom line: as long as that demand is on the table the US is making clear they do not want a deal and its the US that has to be blamed for the lack of progress.
I call troll on TimG.
Lies? He’s bargaining. Apparently you’ve never purchased a carpet, or somesuch, in MENA?
Wait, so you’re telling me that if one party to the negotiation immediately drops its demands that it is clearly making in order to horse trade them for concessions elsewhere, that the deal would be done quickly? You don’t say. Do you have a newsletter where I can subscribe to read about your insights into treaty negotiations?
OMG. Trump lied ? And all these years I have believed every politician in Canada has been forthcoming and truthful . You have shocked me . But when you have a proof it’s a good proof because it’s a proof. And I am so happy since we don’t pay GST. And if you had a good day and some one else perceived it differently it’s a lesson for us all even if at first you couldn’t remember it . Yes Tim , you are one of the worlds greatest comedians .
Mexico had bigger issues than Trudles did with re-negotiation, but for some weird reason there was much more interest in the Mexican side in getting agreement then there has ever been on the Canadian side.
It’s a shame that Trudles has no problem with making Canada a vassal to China. Sacrificing a trade deal so that Canada can continue to be China’s pool boy for trans-shipping steel and aluminum to the US is precisely what the ChiComs want. If he continues down this path there will be more and more of “ Canada’s “ exports blocked from entering the United States, as China gains more and more control over the Canadian government and trade policy. And China will gain more and more leverage eventually dictating the terms of trade between China and Canada.
Sorry, TimG, but Trudles is putting Lib party politics ahead of Canadian’s economic well-being.
Same as it ever was.
You lost me with your nonsense about so-called constant lying.
You missed the part where Trump said he was amenable to sunshine clauses to get a deal.
Now you argue the opposite happened. China coming to the table, along with the EU, but fools like you and Trudeau choose to join the losing team of anti-Americanism.
Don’t ask me to prove it; do your own friggin research; but I recommend you vet it through someone, anyone, who knows how to do proper research
The rest of your co-called argument is spoiled rotten fruit of your poisonous tree of TDS hatred.
timG…you got any other strong points, besides being a effing idiot??
the Turds “timing” is what the real problem was/is. You GD libbies can never get it rite, can you. Trump is in the drivers seat, no matter what an asshole like you thinks (and that statement is a stretch). If you haven’t figured out by now that the Turd is NOT running the show, you are even stupider than I thought. The Turd is a front BOY!!!!
Bingo…nice to see someone else understand that TinkerBell is simply the Puppet in a show orchestrated by his Globalist Masters and his string puller Gerald Butts.
When your party is in Deep Debt (Liberal Party 2010), and someone comes along and bails you out, then finances your Multi-Million Fed Election Campaign replete with a “TRUDEAU” Jet….there is always a reckoning..an “understanding” that YOU F’kn well will do as we Say for as long as we continue to finance you. Look to George Soros, the HRC Foundation, People Republic of China and the Obama’s as to where said financing came from and who pulls his strings.
The grand design of all of this is nothing less than the destruction of Western Capitalism. What Marxism has been after for a Century…Tinkerbell being fully infused with that goal.
Then why is a deal closing with Mexico if Trump is the problem here?
Trump constantly lies…mmm…and who has told you that he constantly lies?
would that be the main stream media that are caught red handed telling lies everyday ?
Would that be the same main stream media that assures us every muslim that murders infidels while yelling ALAHU AKBAR is not a muslim terrorist but a poor soul that had depression problems and deserves our sympathy more than his islamophobic and racist victims?
Is that from those media that you get ” information” on Trump?
and those media who assure you Trump tells a lot of lies, are they the same media that only show 4 seconds of a video where it looks like Trump is so damn ignorant and stupid that he walks in front of the Queen, but intelligent people saw the entire video that shows it was the Queen who INSISTED Trump walks in front of her?
So those media that tell lies 24/7 that is who “informed” you that someone they hate with an intense passion is a liar.
wow.
” the *US* intransigence on the 5 year expiry clause…”
Not agreeing to a 5 year review clause didn’t make any sense – considering that the current Agreement has a clause that either side can pull out after giving 6 months notice.
You are the one seeking the clue. The 5-year expiry was never more than a negotiating chip that the Liberal braintrust failed to neutralize. I was never a fan of Justnot’s dad, but I could imagine him, in his sneering drawl, asking “If Mr. Trump would break ground on a new golf course with just a five year lease?” (I could imagine L’il Stevie Harper saying it as well, but more matter of fact and less insulting.) If you looked at interests, instead of positions, you might ascertain that Trump doesn’t want to be stuck in a bad deal; this was his way of saying, unlike Ontario’s solar and wind rates, if I’m going broke under this deal, I’m breaking this deal. What intelligent negotiators – this eliminates Freeland, et al – might have done is try to understand what conditions might make think Trump the deal is not working, and how they could be addressed in the context of an ongoing deal. They might have traded off a 10-year reduction, starting immediately, on supply management, for a permanent acceptance of Canada’s right to set stumpage fees without regard to US private rates. They might have suggested stress mechanisms to identify sectors where market shares are rapidly changing, so that all parties can investigate and invent solutions. This would have appealed to Trump – you give some, he gives some, everybody’s all smiles, we’re gonna work together, it’ll be great.
Then, we might have been on the Trump train at the start, as a partner. Say “Make us a signatory to all Trump’s deals; it will make life easier for everyone”. That way, we might have had the benefit of the US’s clout negotiating FOR us. Instead, Trudeau’s unthinking virtue-signalling, and offering up his balls to be crushed, has relegated us to a back seat for the foreseeable future.
The CAD US exchange rate has changed by 30% over the last 5 years. Yet we are told by our Canadian leaders that our business can not make long term investments without more than 5 year trade stability guarantee.
This is the up front big lie.
Canadian business has to deal with 30% fluctuations with the cost of equipment and sale price on less than a 5 year basis.
No trade with US until we peg the CAD to a fixed % of the USD for more than 5 years?
Trendy say, “no deal better than bad deal”.
That has to be the most uninformed idiotic website, with this one following the same death spiral. The same incorrect assumptions then the same idiotic rhetoric coming from those idiotic assumptions.
Once again you provide no data to support your idiotic assumptions.
hi timG!!!!
I call troll on Allan S.
Woah!
“The same incorrect assumptions then the same idiotic rhetoric coming from those idiotic assumptions.”
I didn’t see anyone here assume Trudeau isn’t an idiot. Let’s be perfectly clear on that. Justin Trudeau is an idiot and I think most everybody here would agree. So when we assume he is an idiot that leads us to believe that he will not “take a knee”. Those here with further insight suggest that Trudeau isn’t in charge of anything.
Recently Trudeau has been on another vacation and did not return despite a mass shooting in Toronto. This event has generated huge public concern and out-cry for government action. Trudeau did not return. Of course if you believe him to be an idiot and not in charge of anything it is understandable that he is being kept at arm’s length by his handlers to avoid him screwing things up. What other possible reason could there be?
Kool-Aid alert!
Looks to me that Trudeau is banking on winning the next election based on a calculation that most of the Canadian electorate suffer from TDS and he expects to win based solely on being seen as standing up to nasty and mean ol’ Trump. Economic well-being of our country be damned. Sick thing is? It just might work.
What’s this “might” thing? Trudeau is running an anti-US campaign and Scheer AGREES WITH HIM. That’s a great policy position to be in if you win right? Scheer should be out there screaming from the rooftops that Trudeau has screwed up our trade relationship with the US. Instead what is he doing? Who the hell knows is the answer. Probably paling around with millionaire dairy farmers or something.
Yup.
Could’ve had Bernier. That’s a hill I was willing to die on.
Not another Quebecker.
Never.
While I’m sure Justard does not “think”…I also agree with you on Justards handlers wanting to use the half- witted actor as a “hero” fighting against big bad Donald Trump… “we won’t be puthed awound”… Canadians (Trudopians) are sufficiently dim-witted, politically unsophisticated, delusional and cult like for a Trudo that they will follow the dumb ass actor right off a cliff. It is a sick and thoroughly demented strategy, but with the help of our corrupt corporate and State run Media it will work like a charm… instead of “Stop Harper” the actor and his radical handlers will “Stop Trump”.
“Sick thing is? It just might work” Tim and Allan believe it and those are 2 smart cookies.
Heh.
The Trump & Spain news conference was a body blow to Turdo & Neo-con Republicans..,The insane idea that every failed US sponsored overthrow was not idiotic…..Playing Russian chicken with Nukes, hoping that the Russian opposition to Putin would not result in an incompetent coward controlling Russia…Let them make their own mistakes & fight their own battles… We sane Americans do not want to police or control the World.. We also have enough Good, Bad and the Ugly
“…. presuming he’s not an idiot.”
Who is presuming that?
This guy, the airhead in Ottawa, is doing his very best on daily bases to support that notion.
The only people that don’t know that are like those three monkeys, “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil”.
Heh, would that be a stretch?
“Opportunity favours the prepared mind.”
Suddenly Mexico, who Trump had ragged on for years, elects a new President who grabs the torch and closes a deal. Leaving Canada’s apparent obfuscate-and-delay strategy in tatters.
We could have been first to seal a deal. Instead we’ll be on the outside clamouring to get in. With the advantage all on Trump’s side. To save the trade agreement, Trudeau will have to capitulate to Trump, who will likely demand significant new concessions once the Mexico deal is signed & sealed. Trudeau may not be willing to humiliate himself that way, and could easily let Trump cancel what remains of NAFTA.
Why is it so hot, and what are we doing in this handbasket?
