The best way to reduce the use of pesticides, decrease the amount of total land used in agricultural production, keep food affordable by maintaining/increasing crop yields is through GMOs and worldwide modernisation of agricultural practices. Environmentalists should support research, testing and promotion of genetic improvements of plants and livestock but they, of course, oppose the most logical solutions and will instead demand the most expensive, counterproductive schemes. It’ll be like electricity generation where progressives and environmentalists protest the conversion from coal to hydro, nuclear or natgas and insist on the fairy tale that wind and solar are adequate replacements, if only governments apply enough taxes and subsidies. Their utopian society, which I suspect would be organic farming and green energy, will produce only poverty for all but the top income brackets (see SanFran or Portland).
There are already signs of fraud and incompetence in the anti-pesticide, anti-herbicide, anti-gmo research that will be used by international agencies and national governments to impose bans and regulations. Glysophate and neonicotinoid in particular have become targets even though they are less harmful than the chemicals they replaced. Again, the best alternative right now is GMO, which is also on the hit list.
Well said LC. The anti-pesticide, anti-herbicide, anti-gmo movement is just as big a fraud as AGW (climate change). Throw in the anti-vaxxer crowd in there with that bunch as well.
We had the coldest winter in over a hundred years, since the 1890s, in much of Canada.
40 years ago virtually no-one in Alberta over-wintered bees. A large bee farmer I knew went to California every spring to pick up packages containing a queen and some workers to start fresh each year. Overwintering is always hit or miss. Th cold blooded beasts eat sugar and heat the hive by buzzing at 45 below. If the winter is too long or too cold, they die. As noted elsewhere above, we keep setting production records for honey while screaming about disaster. It’s all BS – everyone loves disasters so much they have to keep inventing them. Y2K anyone?
Weren’t our bees all supposed to be Africanized and killing us in deadly swarms by now? I mean, scientists decreed this to us, so it must be true! Right?……Right?
