[H]umans weren’t meant to be connected on a global scale. The entire history of humanity – recorded and unrecorded – reflects that. Tribes, clans, and countries have warred for years. The disparity between cultures, morals, ideals, priorities and more have consistently put differing people at odds with one another. Social media didn’t create that. In fact, it magnified it.

I feel inadequate now. My Dunbar number is likely a tenth of that 🙂
crikey.
I cant even get along with most, in fact, all but one of my siblings.
3 of which are alcoholics. them and the old man sluiced thru a 1/4 million bucks on booze. (today’s dollars)
I went the pot route which is why I’m still sober and functioning.
I told one of them if he ever threatened me again he would find out just how g*^$*mn tough I am and included a ph’copy of a document asserting an enormous weight lift.
he hasn’t got back to me.
Ya, well, I can lift 300 pounds over my head and still nobody likes me.
hand stands????
Ha!
Kate thanks for posting. Brilliant.
This is why for example the US is composed of 50 different states. It is why Canada has 10 provinces and 3 territories. Humans don’t function well and are not happy when they are forced into massive single-minded groups, but this is always what the left is pushing. It runs against human nature – American revolution ring a bell?
This is why I have always despised globalists and the UN. It is one of the primary reasons why I hate the left. They want to force on us their illnesses, which includes their belief that we must all get along in one giant mass of dull, soul sapping, conformist humanity.
Facebook can rot along with their childish, shallow, leftist founder who did nothing but win the high tech lottery and now thinks he is God.
I agree, and Scott Monty is right, as is Hungary’s Prime Minister Victor Orban. Orban said the other day that people who have not lived under the collective life of communism that Marxists want cannot understand the soul killing that occurs.
Why were the First Peoples divided into very distinct tribes, living in close proximity with one another, who held very little in common aside from the basic struggle for survival and superstitious, childish, beliefs in various animal gods? It is in man’s DNA to divide into defensible, controllable, groups who share each other’s interest.
The #1 feature of large groups (globalization) is … anonymity. Anonymity is what allows school shootings to continue unabated. In modern American society, there is no accountability. There is no personal responsibility. There is a high degree of invisibility. Only Google, Facebook, and the CIA truly “know” you … and they only seek to TAKE from individuals for fun and profit. Social media adds to your anonymity. Social media does not “connect” people in the way a physical community does. In the way a family does.
Artificially forced multiculturalism is NOT “joining” community (tribal) groups … anymore than forced bussing improved the racial relations between vastly different student communities. The cartoonish Disneyesque (leftist) notion of “one big world” all holding hands, singing songs (in Esperanto) happy and worry-free is the most absurd LIE ever told since “Global Warming is wrecking the planet”. The only ones PROFITING from such an absurd image are multinational corporations like coca-cola … the government-media-multi-National Corporate complex. The people are SUFFERING from it.

I have three problems with the theory that people weren’t meant to be connected.
Problem #1. Just because we weren’t connected in the past doesn’t mean we were not meant to be connected or cannot function connected.
Problem #2. The author seems to equate stable social relationships with “contacts on Facebook”. This on its own is silly. It is possible to have a stable social relationship with someone online just as it is possible to have a “non-Facebook” contact, like your barber, the mailman, the manager at the grocery store etc. None of these latter people have a stable social relationship with you. They are merely people who you come into contact with.
Problem #3. Young adults are not growing tired of social media. Perhaps it is peaking as distribution approaches 100%. Plus young adults are always growing tired of everything. Then they have kids and really learn what “growing tired” is. Try getting a young adult off social media or Netflix with “a hand-written note” and I’ll buy you a beer.
You only have tight relationships with people of like mind. Those who reflect your value system back on you. So, maybe your brother doesn’t but your barber might.
Opposites don’t attract they repel. That’s why tribalism works.
I went through a ton of women figuring this out…..
Ugh. I feel for your female trial and error.
I only made that mistake ONCE (yes, it really WAS all about the GREAT SEX). Marrying a woman who changed her name from from “Linda” … to “Mahalia Reba”. Enough said. That experience focused my brain like a laser beam … and have been happily (mostly) married for 36years
I wish I went through a ton of women………
Well…you just need one really big one.
Steve from … Experience?
a ton, boy she must have been one fatty patty
There is nothing wrong with contact or the number it relates to. There is everything wrong with believing we will agree on anything decided by group think or consensus. We are individuals and that reflects in our opinions and ideals. That’s why globalism is always doomed to fail and tribalism is what we will always be comfortable with and no amount of social engineering will change that,….. unless we are attacked by another species from another planet. There are left brains, right brains and brainless. We know which ones we like to communicate with although I believe the shallow end of the gene pool is now overflowing and we now live with a generation of idiots. But for that I give tribute to the education system and all the social justice warriors in teaching positions….

Peter, I think that this meshes well with my comment below.
The Dunbar number might talk about individuals, but there are always rankings of who I am willing to support, and against whom. Not all gradations are listed, but in order:
My family above my community.
My community above against my town.
My town above my region.
My region above my province.
My province above my country.
My country above my national grouping (Anglosphere, Commonwealth, or G8 in the case of Canada)
My grouping against the world.
As i move farther away from my family group, the cultures get more and more different. The culture that is closest to my own is best (in my view) and the most deserving of promotion and support. My culture is heavily influenced by my religion, making them part of my community. Co-believers in distant nations can take precedence over provincial or federal beliefs on some topics.
Part of the potential value of social media is that it can let me know what other individuals or groups out there share aspects of my culture. The masking of this important information by the TwitFace leadership is an attempt to isolate those with whom they disagree, to keep resistance to the TwitFace worldview to a minimum.
The Globalist SocProgs want to replace your list with the “ideology”.
I have a facebook acct for one reason … to have access to pieces posted on facebook and to be allowed to comment on some sites. Otherwise, I have nothing on my FB site, just the bare minumum.
I don’t use Twitter much and have it for the same reason.
I haven’t had access to 150 potential relationships since I was in high school.
How many other people does one actually want in their lives. I am good with a few and that’s it.
Oh well, maybe a ‘major event’ will come along…
https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/trump-says-it-will-be-hard-to-unify-country-without-a-major-event
“I would love to be able to bring back our country into a great form of unity,” Trump said. “Without a major event where people pull together, that’s hard to do. But I would like to do it without that major event because usually that major event is not a good thing.”
That’s why our moral and intellectual superiors make a point of ignoring the problems facing humanity, viz.
1. Islam
2. Uncontrolled breeding of the sort of people too dull and lacking in self-control to sustain economic development above the level of subsistence farming.
They don’t give a damn about real problems until those problems start to inconvenience them or their dinner guests personally. By then it’s usually too late. They’ll go on celebrating diversity till the mujahideen of the Islamic State of Canada tie Justin Trudeau and Gerald Butts together by the ankles and throw them off the Peace Tower.
Till then their priority will be denying the problems exist while shielding themselves and their friends from the consequences, for as long as they can. Out of sight, out of mind.
America has been breeding and importing a vast underclass of government dependents. It is not going to end well for our nation. Thank you, Ted Kennedy! The mafia murdered your brothers … so YOU murdered our entire nation. 1-million+ LEGAL immigrants every year since 1970. Welfare lifestyles expanded and institutionalized under Uni-party rule. The middle class destroyed.

Actually immigration leads to less welfarism.
A friend will help you move. A real friend will help you move a body.
“But here’s the thing: humans weren’t meant to be connected on a global scale. The entire history of humanity – recorded and unrecorded – reflects that. Tribes, clans, and countries have warred for years. ”
Exceptionally stupid. History is not a guide for the future. We also didn’t have vaccines does that mean we are not meant to be free of smallpox and diptheria outbreaks? Dumb dumb dumb
I agree — partly. Someone once said “if God wanted us to fly he’d have given us wings”. It’s great to be able to fly. Whoever said that can go jump off a cliff (and presumably not fly to save themselves 🙂 ).
Here’s the but: history is nothing more than a record of human behaviour, mistakes, foibles, and failings. If we want to succeed in this technological era, we have to pay attention to our flaws and how to improve on them. Otherwise we’ll just make the same mistakes as other civilizations and fade into insignificance.
Is it possible for one’s Dunbar Number to be negative?
