Effectively, top bureaucrats are warning the government, not to tell the public the real immigration numbers lest support for immigration fall. In other words, lie to the public to keep them onside.

I wonder how the public would feel if they knew the real total intake for 2016 was 848,000 people and not 260,000 as the poll claims.

  1. One thing we can be sure of is nobody really ever goes home. There is no such thing as temporary. One thing Canada lacked was a brown underclass. Well we’ve got it now.

  2. 848,000 instant residents. People that have come to the country and have to be housed, clothed, fed, and yet have never contributed to Canadian society. We have a society that has taken the better part of fifty years to build an infrastructure that was supposed to benefit them. “Them” being Canadians, and their sons and daughters, who have worked in this country and paid taxes to build the schools, hospitals, libraries, community centres, etc., etc., etc., and we have elected governments, that have always fallen short of delivering the promises made to improve our standard of living, bent on depreciating the lifestyle “we” have been trying to achieve. A country of 35 million cannot import numbers of this magnitude without sacrifice. The sacrifice in this case is long waiting times for health care, failing education systems, failing judicial system, more and more taxes, the list goes on and on. Yet we the taxpayers never stand up and say enough is enough because then we are labelled as, racists, nationalists, misogynists, you name it. The solution is very simple and yet no-one wants to state it, so we are digging ourselves deeper and deeper into a hole.

        1. My reference was to “traditional” culture and heritage — French, Anglo, and JudeoChristian. Those are the pillars on which the country was built. It is not a matter of government needing to validate those pillars, but preferably they would not seek to destroy them in favour of the “post-national” agenda.

    IOW, most of it is (unfortunately) temporary. Even if it wasn’t, it’s still far too low. There’s no reason not to open the floodgates.

      1. If it’s far too low, you need to explain why you think so.
      2. “Opening the floodgates” To whom and how many? The carrying capacity for any nation to absorb new immigrants so they can succeed is limited.
      3. Your statement about international students is extraordinarily stupid. A very high proportion of these in fact choose to remain in Canada afterward and go through regular landed immigrant status application.

      2. Increased immigration might be the most potent pro-growth policy out there. Global open immigration would roughly double world GDP. Other regulations look rather picayune in comparison.

        Further, immigration might be the most potent anti-welfarism tool we have. There is growing evidence of a negative correlation between immigration and welfarism. All of America’s welfare state expansions happened during times of low immigration.

  8. People who work for Immigration Minister Ahmed D. Hussen report he is planning a trip to Africa including a country requiring extra armed security. Bureaucrats have told him there is no legitimate reason for going there, but he is headed there anyway.
    Last week Heritage Minister Joly was reportedly determined to undertake a junket to S Korea to study Korean musical production techniques. Again he bureaucrats told her there was no business purpose to the trip.
    Liberals around the very large cabinet table (it there is one) take their cue from the head; think of the India exercise. Out of control spending by Trudeau’s cabinet minions is one reason the budget can never ever balance itself.

    No one here objects to a sane immigration policy where skilled and sane people who want to BE Canadian (not be in Canada – a very important distinction) enter the country legally and fulfill all the requirements of citizenship (the ones that value rule of law and having a working language that unifies). I’ll wager many who visit and/or post on this site are themselves immigrants or children of immigrants who busted their humps to BE Canadian (if you don’t what it is to be Canadian then that is YOUR problem).

    Do people who sneak into the country want to be Canadian? Are they going to apply legally for citizenship? Are they going to work and give to the system that sustains you?

      There’s really no evidence that Canada’s immigration isn’t selective enough. Quite the opposite.

It’s interesting that in the centuries since Europeans migrated around the globe it is generally viewed as a bad thing for the existing people because Europeans overwhelmed local populations, imposed their culture, religious beliefs, political systems and irrevocably changed those territories. It was so bad that billions in reparations must be paid in perpetuity.

    But now, mass migrations to Europe and North American of people with widely different cultures, religious beliefs and political systems is only seen as a benefit to local populations, cannot possibly cause any harm or fundamental change, and must be fully supported and funded by the groups that must also simultaneously atone for their own migration (in perpetuity).

  17. Unfortunately this article plays fast and loose with the numbers. Those favouring a change in immigration policy would be well advised to avoid citing it blindly.

    For example, the number 848,000 is described as “intake”, and included in that total are “266,000 international students”. If you look at the Parliamentary Report, it says “In 2016, more than 266,000 individuals held a study permit as an international student”. So the number 266,000 is not the intake per year, it is the total at a given point in time. If the average term of study was , say, four years, then the number of new students per year would be more like 66,500. And similarly roughly 66,500 students per year would complete their studies. Some would return home, while some would remain and might eventually become permanent residents. (And would then be counted again in some future year’s version of the number 296,000, whoops, more double counting.)

    I would go so far as to say this article actually hurts the cause of those who would prefer lower levels of immigration. Their opponents can point to it and label them a bunch of innumerates. (otoh maybe their opponents will discredit themselves by screaming “racist” at the top of their lungs and it won’t matter.)
