Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Canada can’t build sh it. canadians have lost their way and every freaking moron has a say that will prevent prosperity. if only they were the ones to starve and freeze no one would give a damn.
Can’t do
I still remember the Great Pipeline Debate of 1956 even though I was just a toddler at the time. That’s how much it was in the news. It’s hard to fathom but that debate lasted only about a month in parliament. Liberals used closure to push a bill through in May because it was necessary to start the pipeline by June or put it off until the next year. Pipeline was completed by October.
How times have changed.
Cosh: “Truth is, the partisan clamour over whether Canada is still a country that can build mega-infrastructure in populated areas seems a little pointless to me. Isn’t it obvious that we are not, and have not been for decades?”
Ouch, that hurt.
But it’s also true.
So let me get this right. Kenney (a purported Conservative) and Red Raiche both feel that government funding is the solution whenever private enterprise claims it can no longer proceed on a project because the undertaking’s economic viability has been stalled by slimy partisan politics and endless government bureaucracy.
Jesus H. If you were Mr. K-M, would you ever want the effin issue solved?
I need a ******g rye.
Well you don’t quite have it right. The economic equation for the Trans Mountain expansion is quite different for Kinder Morgan is than it is for the province of Alberta. Kinder Morgan gets paid through tolls to move the product and that’s it. The province of Alberta needs to get its oil to tidewater to get away from the “one-buyer” situation it currently finds itself in. The economics for Alberta itself is much more serious. The Alberta government should cover additional costs that Kinder Morgan might find itself incurring due to the gong show by the BC NDP. Or if it takes an equity stake, it can sell it when the pipeline is operational. But there is another angle that should be considered. And that is, to make the existing Trans Mountain pipeline an “export to Asia only” pipeline. Shut off the oil supply to Kamloops, Sumas Terminal at Abbotsford (which directs oil to the Washington State refineries which then sends it to the lower Mainland) and the Burnaby and Westridge Marine Terminal. That way, BC needs to get all its supply of refined products from the U.S. and is at the mercy of the Puget Sound refineries. And Alberta gets its export only pipeline to Asia.
Nope, I think I have it quite right, Joey. And you pointed out the ONLY option in this case: shut off the oil supply to BC….immediately.
No actually you don’t have it right. The economic equation for Trans Mountain is much stronger for the province of Alberta than it is for Kinder Morgan. Which is the only reason why Alberta should backstop KM for delays caused by BC. And, Alberta and KM should both be looking at putting together a multi billion dollar public misfeasance lawsuit against BC. But the oil should be shut off to BC and to Washington State and the existing pipeline be used solely to move Alberta crude offshore.
Then we’re going to disagree on this one. The only type of government intervention that will work here is the kind that neither Kenney or Redford have the guts to undertake.
It doesn’t matter. The government has no right to finance pipelines.
I agree Joey. I live on Vcr Island. If Alberta through Kinder Morgan pipeline cut off all refined petroleum to BC we would likely see gas at $3.00 liter. Go for it I say. Use the current pipeline exclusively for export crude and bitumen. Then tell BC that Alberta will only export refined products to BC is if they approve the pipeline. Then see the major trade wars erupt between BC & Alberta. BC has much more to lose and the pain must be felt for the people of BC to stand up to this idiocy.
“Then tell BC that Alberta will only export refined products to BC is if they approve the pipeline.”
I’m afraid that’s probably both unconstitutional and illegal. A province does not get to tell a private company to whom they may sell their products in Canada or anywhere else (you “export” products from countries, not sub-national entities).
Of course, absolutely absent without leave – and in complete and utter dereliction of their duty to knock provincial heads together and get things moving on this file – is the Federal government.
I wouldn’t send a drop of oil or refined products to BC. As for crude, the province can refuse to sign export permits….they might be able to do something similar with refined products. As for being “unconstitutional”, who gives a damn. BC doesn’t seem to care about the constitution.
I doubt that TM being shut down to Burnaby will be practical. That’s a Canadian company operating there…Parkland Fuels. They can’t shut stuff from TM going to US refineries in the Seattle area, affects US customers & those refineries supply Vancouver with part of their requirements right now. The recent love in with BC’s Horgan, Weaver & the WA State Govenor to block TM expansion, probably cemented any tight fuel problems by blocking shipments to Burnaby. US refiners will take up the slack & you’ll do little damage to the Lower Mainland. BP & Conoco will be happy to take BC’s money & boost capacity at US refineries, just on the cash differential alone.
Buying a stake in TM is a waste of time & money. I don’t own shares in that companyright now & for a damned good reason. Kenny should realize that. Let Notley bury herself on this, she was anti oil before she got elected. She’s part of the problem, when she hires two well known anti oil activists to advise her ministers, one from BC (Tzeporah Berman) & one from Ontario (Brian Topp). Horgan wants to build a pipeline for gas to get out from under AB control of gas piped through AB, so AB can only tariff that line until one gets built in BC. Realistically, AB can only do limited damage to BC. BC is already whacking AB property owners in the Okanagan with their “spec tax”. It is aimed directly at Albertans, as they are the biggest land owners in the Okanagan recreational property business.
Do a deal with Eagle Spirit, the native run proposal to the Alaska coast, if you want a pipeline & end run BC. BC tries to stop that one & they’ll be fighting an Indian war they won’t win, with anybody.
Let’s get one thing straight here. BC stepped out of Confederation when Christy Clark wanted revenues from AB, over Gateway. Mr Dressup cancelled Gateway right after he got elected & made sure it wouldn’t be resurrected by placing a tanker ban on the NW coast. Eagle Spirit goes ’round that, too in US waters from a US port. That action right there has led to BC assuming they could do what ever they wanted about any other pipeline proposal….with Mr Dressup’s endorsement, of course. Talk is cheap. End of Confederation as constituted, just nobody has come right out & said so.
Mr Dressup’s next election is going to be fought over this, because TM goes down (or even if it doesn’t the damage is done) Alberta, Saskatchewan & Manitoba will have to decide if Confederation is working for them.
Confederation is done right now on this issue.
“A province does not get to tell a private company to whom they may sell their products in Canada or anywhere else (you “export” products from countries, not sub-national entities).”
Better let Quebec (and others) know….beer, booze, butter, margarine, et al.
Perhaps we need to start rethinking the utter folly of selling a strategic resource to China.
Actually, I’d like to shut down any and all pipelines from northeastern BC which cross Alberta and Saskatchewan. I think Saskatchewan’s already on side with that idea.
(Joey – April 9, 2018 at 3:44 pm )
” And Alberta gets its export only pipeline to Asia.”
Question: Is this viable for Alberta and KM? Can they make sufficient profit with this limitation?
(P.S. If they can, then I agree that you’ve called this correctly.)
I think that if the Alberta government has an equity stake in TM, then they have legal standing to sue the Government of BC for damages. That’s not something that KML is going to want to take on, and the BC Government knows it. This strategy neutralizes the BC strategy of bankrupting the “other guy” in court and raises the stakes for BC quite a bit. It also makes sure that the UCP aren’t in a position of being painted by the NDP as “not supporting Alberta industry” in the upcoming election – which you all know would happen and a lot of Alberta voters would buy that story line.
Just another way in which Kenney is a disaster.
Pretty obvious from reading the comments for that article, that the oil industry is going to be nationalized in Canada, and that there is already widespread support.
We be boned. Completely and irredeemably. Boned. Very clear Canada has been over as a free country for a very long time.
The resources belong to the provinces….not the feds.

What do you think PetroCan was? It was one of PET’s pet projects.
Soon after it was established, the company started by buying up assets that certain companies were abandoning, such as Atlantic Richfield’s Canadian subsidiary, as well as the old Pacific Petroleums (Phillips decided to pull out of Canada shortly before that).
The outfit wasn’t popular in Calgary. There’s a reason why its office there was nicknamed “Red Square”.
Then, of course, there was the NEP. By PET’s mandate, it seemed that western Canada’s oil and gas reserves didn’t belong to us any more, but to Ottawa.
Now that PM Soy Boy wants to finish what daddy didn’t accomplish.
When robbing Peter to pay Paul, one can always count on the support of Paul. Especially when Peter bends over and says “please sir, may I have another.”
Canada is a huge welfare scam designed to keep the Laurentian Elite in control that would completely collapse if Alberta and Saskatchewan were to truly ask; “Who is John Galt?” It is well and truly past that time and I doubt sincerely that Mr. Kenney will have any spine to stand up and say, “ENOUGH!”
Mr. Kenney says he will axe the Carbon Tax as soon as he is elected. I am sure he will. What, however, will be his reaction when Le Dauphin (who will easily win the next election over the milquetoast Joe Two with massive support in Quebec and the Maritimes, the Paul of our narrative) imposes a nationwide Carbon Tax to be imposed at the wellhead, not the burner tip?
Meanwhile, the drama teacher and the high school co-op students who apparently run the Federal government these days are nowhere to be seen.
This is the outcome hair lisp wanted. No doubt about it.
Meathead is in Quebec handing out “federal cash” for some transit infrastructure… “this country, it belongs to us”… it sure does. Anyone who thinks Meathead or PM Heinrich Himmler Butts give a damn about the pipeline or Alberta or BC then you’re dreaming. I said, and others said that when Meathead got elected that there would be no new pipelines built while he was acting as PM and so far so good… Despite Meatheads scripted rhetoric about the “pipeline being built” while he smirks, sneers and does nothing, the pipelines will not be built, the pipeline is as dead as this country. Although why people want Trudopia to stay together is beyond me, the Dominion is long dead and has been for decades… can we stop the charade now and put this imbecilic experiment of a country out of its misery?
Me too Sean, I said as soon as Mr. Dressup was elected that there would never be another major oil pipeline built in Canada. He keeps saying it will be built but he does absolutely nothing because he is and always has been against it.
Governments becoming direct shareholders in this solves absolutely nothing.
If I’m premier, I’d immediately announce that, if not resolved once and for all by May 31, on June 1st the taps to BC get shut off, end of story.
Time for some serious shinola to hit the proverbial fan in this God forsaken, pathetic excuse for a nation!!!
The taps should have already been shut off; and never announce an attack. Making threats shows only that you are not serious. Making threats, is a likely indicator that you don’t actually want to do it.
If Alberta was serious, the oil would have simply stopped already, and any inquiries as to why would have been answered with silence. That is how you can tell Notely doesn’t actually want the pipeline either.
All that matters is the facade, of wanting a pipeline. The Potemkin pipeline will be built; Trudeau guarantees it.
Genuinely laughing out loud that people still think Pander Bear Kenney is a conservative.
I have to agree with you. I supported Brian Jean for a number of reasons. I will only hold my nose and vote for Kenney because he is the only choice (presently) to get rid of the socialist twits. I have never trusted Kenney since the day he personally intervened to have white South Africans not have refugee status when they clearly should. Now that effort is definitely coming home to roost
I’m sure glad I didn’t vote for either the Liberals or the NDP/Greens, but having said that, I think that they’ve won inasmuch as they have pretty well destroyed the economy already. The spineless federal government should arrest people like Horgan and the mayor of Vancouver, Bike Path Robertson and the mayor of Burnaby for inciting illegal protesting. Throw the stupid fools in jail for a while. Every poll I’ve seen indicates there is between 65-75% approval of the pipeline and the only thing holding things up is this minority. If they won’t get out of the way, move ’em.
Any attempt by Notley to make rank and file British Columbians pay for her incompetence is guaranteed to fail.
She was the one who made the foolish mistake of assuming that if you give the Green Fascists a carbon tax they will give you a pipline. Now the chickens are coming home to roost.
Kenney should not join such nonsense and should instead stick to the most important talking point in all of this which is that carbon taxes get you nothing, and that if you give the Green Fascists an inch they will take a mile. He should let Notley drown in her own mess.
The pipeline will not get built and Notley can wear that between now and the next election.
Canada had better start paying attention to what happens when governments can no longer offer a stable country to conduct business in. The continuous moving of goal posts and subjugating to small numbers of protesters is already causing massive capital flight from canada.
Venezuela.
And you many think that Trump has a problem with China.
They ain’t seen nothing yet.
Watch the socialists eat each other.
Should be good entertainment.
This is an example of green theology versus the rule of law. The twist here is that the BC government is on the side of green theology and thuggery. If a group of “greens” decided to stop car traffic on all the bridges in the Lower Mainland in the name of decarbonization, the RCMP and or municipal police would arrest them immediately under criminal charges. In green political theatre, the RCMP are there to protect greens from workers kept from doing their legal jobs up until the proponents have obtained (Civil) Court orders such as those that got Lizzy and Davey arrested. The federal government, under PM Butts and the idiot Spawn, if they truly wanted to see the pipeline constructed, could exert all kinds of legal (and fiscal) pressure on BC and its subordinate local governments to expedite this project. The rule of law is being suspended by the federal government while the green theatre is promoted by their media. The minorities win because the majorities follow what they think is the “peaceful” way as greens are prepared to be beaten for their cause and “we” are prepared to lose rather than deliver the beating. The Spawn is perpetrating fraud or he is a coward. If his father had wanted a pipeline, if need be, the Army would have seen it done and Horgan and the Climate Imam could easily end up behind bars. Ironically, so successful is the US funded green lobby, the only way that Canada’s “ethical” oil gets to non American markets is if it becomes “bloody” oil.
Hmm….
Some here want the government take over.
Government has zero business in running anything. Hell, they hardly know how to run government on every level.
If you think that Venezuela can’t happen here, you just watch how the government messes thing up.
Look at the vehicle insurance business in British Columbia, they have been running deficits for few years. There is no chance in hell that they can do any better.
Look at car insurance in Alberta’s free enterprise, you can pick from perhaps hundred insurers that must compete for yer buck.
A relative in Greater Vancouver pays for 1 vehicle more than we pay for 2 in Alberta.
If you would like to argue about that, forget it. No contest.
The socialist extremists that run the government of Alberta are in deep trouble. Forget that they will lose the next election, nobody ever doubt that, the last one they won by pure default.
The idiots borrowed so much money, you could start a new country with it. That is why they are so loud about getting the pipeline. They need really badly the cash to pay for all the debt they brought about on the plebeians. We will be paying for it for a generation, if not longer.
Some here don’t seem to get that government don’t have any money. And they can’t run anything.
Ooo, yes they can, if it does not work out they can always tax you. Just like that.
You think that a pipeline is guaranteed cash. In Venezuela, the socialists thought that oil will bring a lot of cash.
If Kenney pushed for government putting money in private enterprise, got to talk to him. Everybody in Alberta should write to the so called conservatives to stop it.
The only purpose of government in this story is permits, less regulations, less of them.
When it comes to conservative politicians in this country, who you gonna call?
IF Kenney was in charge – this wouldn’t be needed and I am almost 100% certain that he would have turned off the taps a LONG time ago. But he’s NOT in charge – and there’s an election coming up – and the UCP can’t put itself into a position of looking like it sat on its hands while the NDP tried to “save” the TM.
You guys are right, there aren’t many truly conservative people in Canada – I’ve watched my whole life as this country has been indoctrinated to believe that there should be a government program for every problem. I personally am in support of the smallest and least-intrusive government possible, but the majority of my most conservative-supporting friends can be counted on to see a role for government in almost everything.
So, considering that the idea of buying into the TM came from the NDP, and is probably designed to be unpalatable to the UCP, I personally see this as some “game theory” coming in to play. And, as has already been noted in other discussions – an equity stake can be sold, and I’m sure that selling it will be the SECOND thing that the UCP government does when it is elected.
BC voters aren’t smart enough to make the connection between refined supply and gas prices. We have the highest priced in the cuntry and idiots think it’s eeevil oil companies ripping us off. They don’t even think about basics like why it is that our prices are so much hi there than say Calgary’s or Edmonton.
BC voters aren’t smart enough to make the connection between refined supply and gas prices. We have the highest priced in the cuntry and idiots think it’s eeevil oil companies ripping us off.
I travel to NE BC as part of settling my father’s estate. I never got that impression there, largely, I think, because oil and gas is a major industry in that part of the province.
Lotusland, however, is another story. Every time I’ve been there, I got the feeling that the people were permanently disconnected from reality and were clueless about how the rest of the world works.
Ah the pure laine lower mainlanders are upset about immigrants, absent landlords, vacant houses, bike lanes, the coast guard, froot loops and fairy tales.
I am pro-pipeline and a resident of BC, no longer the lower mainland having moved to the mountains for my sanity.
However, it should be said as part of this discussion that the government of Alberta brought this problem upon themselves to some extent by playing the ideological game when they were dealing with Christy Clark who was not adamantly opposed to this project, but went to Edmonton seeking some assurances that a fair formula would be worked out for payment of costs in the event of an oil spill.
This is not widely understood outside BC, but residents here have legitimate reasons for doubting the claims of safety routinely made by oil companies, we all remember when a black version of Old Faithful suddenly appeared in north Burnaby and destroyed several residential blocks. This is not some eco-freak talking here, but I don’t want to give a free pass to companies who are that careless with their infrastructure. And it’s not the only example one could find.
We need this pipeline and I think it will get built, maybe after 2019 when these two governments are both history. But we also need to respect legitimate concerns for safety and not give these companies the idea that any old half-cocked design will be okay as long as some people somewhere get rich. The rest of us paying taxes don’t want to be the source of that wealth necessarily.
Peter, unwittingly you have been swayed by the green propaganda surrounding the pipeline, your following paragraph is 100% wrong;
This is not widely understood outside BC, but residents here have legitimate reasons for doubting the claims of safety routinely made by oil companies, we all remember when a black version of Old Faithful suddenly appeared in north Burnaby (1) and destroyed several residential blocks(2). This is not some eco-freak talking here, but I don’t want to give a free pass to companies who are that careless with their infrastructure(3). And it’s not the only example one could find.
1. That old faithful in North Burnaby was in fact caused by a contractor working for Burnaby City Council, they were replacing a sewer main and an idiot excavator operator pierced the pipeline with his excavator blade, we are talking about a quarter inch thick oil pipeline , if that was not bone-headed negligence then nothing is. Kinder Morgans biggest mistake was not to pursue fully Mayor Corrigan and the council for losses. How do I know? I lived three streets away.
2. The destruction was not several blocks, in fact I don’t believe any house was destroyed but the cleanup was very expensive.
3. KM was not careless, in fact that off-loading facility and the tankers operating through Burrard inlet have been operating over fifty years with zero serious problems, it takes a dumb-ass city council to destroy that record.
Frankly I cannot see the pipeline being built KM have been too passive in revealing the truth and sucking up to the Indian band across the inlet. Canada seceded its sovereignty long ago to the Tides foundation and the Indian bands.
UnMe said: “The government has no right to finance pipelines.”
Yeah, but apparently they have every right to finance aerospace companies.
Peter O’Donnell:
LIke you, I moved from the lower mainland (24 yrs. ago) to V. Island. While I love it here, the folks are even loopier than those on the mainland. VI provided two Green MLA’s who along with one from the Sunshine Coast, control the immediate fate of some 4 million British Columbians. Not to mention a certain federal MP who hopefully (but not likely) will get smacked down by the criminal court.
About this silly fear that the world as we know it will come to an end with a pipeline spill: get a grip. Have you flown over this province? Do you understand it’s vastness? While undesirable, even a major oil spill is hardly catastrophic in the greater scheme of things. We keep hearing nonsense such as “would you want a pipeline in your backyard”? The reality is that very few people will ever see any part of this pipeline and will never be personally affected by it’s operation.
I think the questions that should be asked include “are you willing to have your wait times for health care doubled due to lack of financing?” “Are you willing to have your kids attend second rate schools due to gov’t cutbacks?” “Are you prepared to have your income tax increase due to gov’t having to borrow more to finance programs the pipeline would have financed?”
People need to understand that risk is not limited to pipeline spills.
We live in interesting times. Pierre Trudeau was the most divisive PM in our history, and his policies caused capital flight that we really didn’t begin to recover from until the late 90’s. We now go into dangerous times still burdened by debt that is mostly the product of the first Trudeau. Yes, the Mulroney govt. ran big deficits, and could have ran smaller ones had Lyin’ Brian been remotely bold on that issue. Sadly, not only was he corrupt to the core, he was infected with the theory of “managerialism.” It’s not enough to be supposedly good managers. There has to be ruthlessness with the costs of government, and a religiosity towards the sanctity of tax payers money. That said, even hard core cost cutting could not have completely eliminated the Mulroney deficits.
The net result is that most of our national debt blame lies at the feet of one Trudeau. The new Trudeau has now chosen to play a very dangerous game. If the current trickle of capital flight becomes a torrent, there may be no turning back. What happens when the dollar loses a third of its value? What happens when employment numbers in Western Canada start running up to 12-15%? What about the hit to the ag sector when energy prices suddenly spike, with stagnant grain prices? Or when the cost of ag equipment repair parts spikes by 50% due to a drop in the dollar?
The flight of capital doesn’t just impact the energy sector. If Trans Mountain is successfully killed by Trudeau, we can expect capital flight to accelerate rapidly. This will come at a time when antipathy towards Central Canada, borne of a series of federal moves over the last few decades, has only tempered slightly from the peak. The looming bloodbath will have to be considerably less damaging than that of the NEP in order for Canada to have any hope of existing a decade from now.
This is not going to end well for Canada. We are hooped. Mo Strong’s dream is coming true.
Looks like Leisuresiut Larry is going to have to do something he would accuse PMSH of doing and be seen as a hypocrite if he did it now.

Joe Oliver: Trans Mountain becomes another project sacrificed to Trudeau’s false green gods
This is a national disgrace. The Liberals have effectively landlocked our vast oil reserves and condemned the country to a poorer, more divisive and less secure future”

Ok, here is an idea who’s time may have arrived. It has become obvious that if you can’t win the game then lets change the game! I propose Alberta and Saskatchewan tag team an effort to build the first North American transportation network of the future. Highly Efficient Vacuum trains that could transport people, commodities of every description all over North America. Screw the pipelines, and antiquated rail systems, we could even give airline travel in North America a run for its money. Idea as follows:
https://newatlas.com/terraspan-vacuum-tube-train-supersonic-ultra-fast/23267/ Sound far fetched…..so did the idea of sending a document around the world via fax.
Why not the type of transport from Futurama? Step in a vacuum tube and away you go.
We welcome our self-driving Overlords …

http://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-wants-to-break-hyperloop-speed-record-soon-2018-4
How about you get serious. We can’t even build a pipeline where we have one already, so we’ll sink our futures into getting approvals to run an alternative to rail….where, beside the rails? Upstream, downstream, then you have to bribe the Indians, Frenchies, Tranna, then Quebec. Ms Wynne wants hi speed rail in S. Ontario. hardehar, like that’s gonna happen? Your’s is cross country. Too many hands in the pie, sport (too many borders with bananistan provinces & unions). Never happen.
You’re a distraction from this discussion.
