The data is clear: driving is much more hazardous than using mass transit. I say that as someone who always drives to work.
Huh?! You correctly indicated that correlation does not equal causation in a post below … yet now you insist that a broad driving statistic applies equally to ALL drivers. Not more accurately ascribed to DRUNK drivers, YOUNG drivers, DISTRACTED (texting) drivers, RECKLESS drivers … etc.
However I do have one statistic I can claim with CERTAINTY … that I will NEVER be stabbed with an ice pick in my personal automobile.
That is not true. It is also untrue that flying is safer than driving.
For example, flying statistics are divided by number of km flown and not hours in the air. Compare hours in the air with hours in a car and both methods have the same risk. The fact that an aircraft travels so many km in one hour with so many passengers creates a statistical mis-comparison.
Same as mass transit. Having hundreds of people on the train seems to reduce risk. But compare number of hours in a train versus hours in a car and the numbers change.
When was the last time you were attacked by one of your commuting passengers with an ice pick. When was the last time one of your passengers urinated on you while you were driving. When was the last time you were stabbed while you were driving to work.
Clearly we must ban subway trains.
