Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Holy hell, woman. When you send someone traffic, you send someone TRAFFIC.My hosting provider thought I was being DDoSed. - Sean McCormick
"The New York Times link to me yesterday [...] generated one-fifth of the traffic I normally get from a link from Small Dead Animals." - Kathy Shaidle
"You may be a nasty right winger, but you're not nasty all the time!" - Warren Kinsella
"Go back to collecting your welfare livelihood." - Michael E. Zilkowsky
Makes sense to me. I wonder why it has taken so long for the narrative of Right versus Left to morph into Private/Personal versus Collectivism?
It could be the history and thinking about Left and Right, that switch does take some realigning of the sides so that more liberty leaning leftists (yes, I’m sure there still are some) would have to partner with their “old enemies”. It is much easier to resist any change rather than have to consort with “evil”, or acknowledge that those they disagreed with for so long are not actually evil.
I always like to play “spot the faulty premise”. He says Christina Hoff Summer is true to the “original” purpose of feminism. But then he offers no evidence, that it was ever about anything, other than misandry and seizing power for themselves.
Well summed up, distribute widely.
Send to all you love, which of course, includes your enemies 🙂
In my sheltered life, I don’t even know who Christina Hoff Summer is … but I DO know who Camille Paglia is. Rubin has described something that is absolutely happening. Not sure I’d affix a “dark” label to it, but I get it. Every clip I see of CNN pundits prattling on about absolute nonsense reminds of just how irrelevant the DIN-O-sour media has become.
And I absolutely WELCOME every left-leaning advocate of FREE SPEECH like Lindsay Shepard to the land of anti-Statist-Authoritarianism.
And thank you, Kate … for this little “dark”, “dank”, “nasty” little corner of the web. Because of people like you … we’re … WINNING!
With the intelligent pundits Rubin mentioned, it is well past time for regularly scheduled public, professionally managed debates to cut through the partisan and media misdirections and lies. Election debates are an utter farce, as debating goes. I bet it would be a massive TV/internet hit and shaming politicians who refuse to participate would be as effective as beating them with arguments.
To save our western democracies, we must first get the citizenry reading the same book before there is even any hope of getting them on the same page. Repeated slaps in the face with the truth combined with the resulting public spectacle of leftist icons being exposed as the delusional minions they are is what is needed to kill their narrative. That, and simply dragging the left’s self-destructive globalist policies into the daylight.
I must say, however, that I believe the most important change required to save our western democracies is to wrestle some of the ungodly powers that parties have gained and give it back to the people. The fact a DC outsider became the Republicans’ candidate, then the US President, says to me that I am far from the only N. American who feels this way.
speaking of intellectual darkness, theres an article in the current ‘Epoch Times’ how western academics are falling in behind the beijing authorities persecution of the falun gong. they painted it as a ‘religious cult’ and we ALL know how leftists detest religion, you know, that ‘thing’ that establishes there is a higher moral code to reach for.

And it is ALL in exchange for $$$ (the root of all Evil) for Apple, Facebook, Google. These monster Corporate entities will happily trade our Constitutional Republican principles for COIN. Because COIN = POWER. And in my opinion, they have amassed too much POWER. As Rubin quipped at the end of his piece … Google will de-money-tize his page after this post. I fear that Google will eventually simply erase any such thought from their sites. They have shown a particular penchant for SILENCING the “opposition”.
Yes, CO … we must drain as much of the swamp as possible to untrench the intrenched Politicians, and their Lobbiest co-conspirators. Trump is FEARLESS … the rest of the GOP? We shall see … won’t we.
Money is not the root of all evil; it is the LOVE of money. I think that is the most common mis-quotation in the universe.
ALL” is a point worth noting.
ALL means every single thing you can think of.
Of course you are correct. I did not mean to imply the misquote … but rather that the behemoth tech corporate entities are willing to sell-out our nations principles and underpinnings for $$$. For POWER. Absolute Power. I would add to your re-quote by saying … “the accumulation of MONEY for the PURPOSE of exercising dictatorial POWER over others … is a SIN.”
My personal favorite expression about $$$ is … Mark 8:36. But since I hate to be perceived as a Bible-thumping Literalist … my preferred version was sung by Loggins and Messina in their (rearely heard) tune Golden Ribbons.
“What does it avail a man, to gain a fortune … and lose his soul?”
This is also a reminder of the early 70’s when the “Jesus Freak” movement informed much of American Art … in music and performance. Godspell. Jesus Christ Superstar. The Birds – Turn Turn Turn. Our culture was saturated in the wisdom of God. But now … we have “evolved” past such nonsense, eh? We are all “scientists” who see the world as an atomic jumble of randomly organized molecules. *snicker*. Yet, we all still feeeeeeel the exact same yearnings and failings of ancient man. Our souls can NEVER evolve without knowing and understanding our creator. Intellectual knowledge is not the be-all and end-all for mankind. We are FAR MORE complex than intellect and technology alone. Geeze … if there isn’t a better example of that than … Google. They’re brilliant, advanced … the pinnacle of our technology … and utterly corrupt and broken human beings
It is extremely difficult to restrain authoritarians. The best try was in the US and yet individual rights and protection from government is failing. Asset forfeiture without charges or convictions, eminent domain used to give private property to rich developers, compelled speech, tiny “free speech zones” in universities, absurd licensing laws as barriers to employment, individual rights replaced by oppression hierarchies based on group rights, a rejection of the scientific method…
Basically, every protection from the US Founding Fathers and every individual rights gained since have been eroded by authoritarians (political left and right). If even straightforward restrictions on government intrusions and enumerated individual rights and freedoms cannot prevent creeping authoritarianism then it’s difficult to see what will. As the authoritarians topple more and more rights and protections the creeping rapidly increases speed.
You could try starting over, I suppose. Carve out a new country in North or South America that attempts to recapture Enlightenment values, restricted government and individual rights. Brain scans to identify authoritarians and then exile them? 🙂
Quite so. The battle is between Libertarian and Authoritarian.
The latter want Plato’s Republic.
The former want to be left alone to pursue their own interests.
The most formal attempt at realizing a state based upon the Libertarian approach is the US Constitution. The more lasse-faire approach is the British constituion.
Those of the authoritatian modod, the Platonists, have the French model. Other successful varients are Nazi Germany, Communism, etc.
Libertarianism is often mocked by both “left” and “right”. I’d lke to redefine libertarianism in terms of the State, as being: The State is a necessary evil, therefore its purview should be limited. (A la US Constitution)
Sorry, don’t have time to develop the political phylosophy but I am oblged, more or less, to support “conservatives” in Canada, except when they want more state, not less.
Government is a wonderful tool.
For theft and extortion.
“The battle is between Libertarian and Authoritarian”. I have tended to think of it (right/left) more in terms of individual responsibility vs. nanny state. Left is very prone to push the nanny state — safe spaces and rules for everything. Ultimately it destroys human initiative and freedom.
I think it as individualism vrs collectivism though not as mischaracterized as selfishness and altruism. More like realism vrs emotionalism.
Individualists live in the real world. Collectivists live in a construct that benefits them, with little regard for reality or facts.
Why do people insist on denying the “left/right political spectrum?” Rubin says up front that he doesn’t like using those labels and then says he prefers the spectrum based on individual freedom and the level of government intervention in people’s lives… as if that hasn’t ALWAYS been the primary variables in the left/right political spectrum. Guess what: Rubin is a right wing, conservative. He can claim that he’s a “liberal in the classical sense of the word” all he wants. We all know that Liberals have co-opted the word and that classical liberals are equivalent to conservatives or right thinking people… it’s so tiresome.
