Canada, Mexico prepared to bend on controversial U.S. sticking point in NAFTA negotiations
Canada and Mexico are prepared to engage the United States on one of its most contentious demands for NAFTA, in an early indication that proposals currently deemed non-starters could, in theory, be redesigned into something all three countries can live with.
As Maclean’s noted the other day, “If NAFTA dies ‘all hell will break loose'”.
Or for Mexico we’re told losing NAFTA is an existential threat.
I expect that Trudeau will agree to any deal as long as the US agrees to allow duty free imports from any company with trans gendered ownership, even if large duties are applied to everything else.

Hundreds, if not thousands of American companies have invested in manufacturing capability in MX over the last 20 years. If there are suddenly tariffs put in place, that is going to put a big hurt on those companies. They will have to scramble to get their costs under control to remain competitive. I can also see it causing mayhem in the MX border states that have seen an explosion of growth in the last 20 years. Many workers won’t know or will have forgotten what it was like before the manufacturing boom.

There’s a colossal difference between a sunset clause and a review mechanism. They’re not even close to the same thing.
A sunset clause keeps Canada and Mexico jumping at every whim of the Americans every five years. It’s vulnerable to terminating the agreement if there’s a December standoff in the U.S. Senate some year. Economic growth will slow or fall for two years out of every five because of the trade uncertainty until all three countries re-ratify.
As a U.S. hardball negotiating tactic, a sunset clause makes sense. As an actual feature of a trade agreement, it’s pure stupidity.

Basically this, but a sunset clause doesn’t even make that much sense. Contrary to the lies from Trump, NAFTA is not unfavorable to the US, even if you’re dumb enough to see imports as a bad thing.
Again this would be all moot if governments were to apply the only rational trade policy: UNILATERAL FREE TRADE
NAFTA may not be unfavorable to the USA, but abuses of the Country of Orgin by Mexican based business is. For example, the dumping of aluminium billets by China or auto parts by Germany.
Imports are no problem whatsoever. Exports are. Exporting the American middle class to Mexico, China, Indonesia, VietNam … THAT is NOT OK.
There’s nothing remotely negative about that either. Imports are the entire point of trade.

Have Trump and his administration decided that in order for America to be energy independent that Canada’s vast resources (oil, gas, coal, forestry, mining and water) need to be under the direct control of the U.S. and Canadian provinces and not Ottawa.
Could we see Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta separate from Canada? Could we see other parts of the country, like Canada’s north including most of northern Quebec separated from Canada?
When it comes to NAFTA and the survival of Canada are Trudeau’s negotiators playing checkers while Trump’s negotiators are playing chess? Are we going to wake up one morning to see the country being torn asunder piece by piece?
Simply stated, is there a bigger picture that is being ignored?

After working directly in an industry spanning North America, I have huge resentment against Mexico and its leadership. They will not change or work to improve unless you do it for them. One example, manual loading and unloading at the largest brewery in the world as a jobs generator. No shxt: No forklifts. And, believe me, this is one small example.
So, NAFTA took American manufacturing prowess below the border and did it for them. They are born socialists. The little Texan was right.
