  1. Well, good for him for opening his eyes (a little, anyway). All people have biases, it goes without saying, and that includes the MSM. So naturally they will write about stories that interest them and fit with their worldview, and ignore those that don’t. And they will write from their biased standpoint. That cannot be avoided.
    The thing is, though, the MSM, the Left and progressives in general try to shut down and silence those who happen to have different biases – opposing viewpoints, so that, when they are successful, one is left with only one worldview that is tolerated and promulgated. And millions of people are denied a voice that is representative of them. Trump comes along and speaks, at least partially, for such people and the reaction of the MSM is to ridicule him and his supporters, and essentially try to silence them (sometimes even with violence).
    So, this was a long winded way of saying, bias cannot be avoided entirely, and I personally “forgive” the MSM’s own obvious bias even though I hold a different worldview from theirs. But we must not accept their silencing of opposing (conservative) viewpoints. Not only conservatives but progressives and the Left will suffer from the loss of free speech (even if the latter do not realize it).

    Except we don’t have an “independent press” when they are overwhelmingly Democratic and their stories are crafted for them. The so called “fact checker” and “editor” functions have time and time again been shown to be absent. And has been pointed out here and elsewhere, the MSM works diligently at attempting to ignore, or worse, silence opposing viewpoints.
    I’m not as forgiving toward the MSM. So many are exclusively urban, operate in an echo chamber of their own choosing and demonstrate not the slightest curiosity about the other half of the country they sneer at.
    Ken Stern’s efforts to understand the those on the Right are laudable but his voice will be ignored – as Kate often points out, it doesn’t fit the narrative.

  3. Per usual Kate … a spot-on, insightful, funny, and cut-to-the-bone response to this silly excuse for “journalism”. Whoopee! A leftist NPR purveyor of FAKE (if not “intentionally suppressed stories that don’t reflect their interests and beliefs”) NEWS … ventures into the hinterland with his pith helmet. The title of his resultant book says it all … Republican Like Me. What he doesn’t know, is that he didn’t meet “Republicans”, he met Conservatives. Living out conservative ideals. We are “Republicans” like he is a “Pig Hunter” (an obvious ‘inside joke’ embedded to amuse his NPR readers). Despite finding few pigs ‘in the wild’ … Bwana finally bagged his ‘pig’ … thanks to the help from his prey, er fellow hunters. He didn’t bag a “pig” … he bagged “conservative America”. Typical mistake of an urban “dude” venturing into flyover country.
    And for someone like ME … an Independent Conservative “Populist” living fully immersed in the belly of the EXTREME liberal leftist beast, reading this Timothy Treadwell-styled story of a liberal living among the “dangerous beasts” in some remote land … makes me want to wretch. I am immersed DAILY in the overgrown forests and grassy labyrinths … the very denizen of the Leftist Beasts. I have to watch my back and carefully plan every step so that I don’t get slaughtered, and torn limb-from-limb by the leftist Bears completely surrounding me. And trust me … it IS a fragile existence. Despite the hushed tones of an NPR broadcast, these leftists will mercilessly slaughter you, if they discover you are not part of their clan. I have been immersed in THEIR habitat for my entire life. I can legitimately pen a novel titled Democrat Like Me. I have spent a lifetime surviving the liberal BEAST … adapting to this EXTREMELY dangerous environment. I live like an American Settler on the vast prairies of the 19th century beset on all sides by danger and death. All because of a nasty, unforgiving, environment dominated by the apex leftist predators.
    This story will make no impact whatsoever to the attitudes of the leftist beasts. We are STILL deplorables in their eyes. OK, so we are “nicer” deplorables than they imagined … but we are still reviled. It doesn’t matter if the Christians are NOT really racist, and they build homes for the poor in Mexico … because they still don’t “believe” in Gay Marriage … so they STILL NEED to be DESTROYED. I challenge this liberal NPR tourist to actually LIVE among us … and see what he has to say. He will find, like me, that he is living in the WRONG ecosystem. That he is so out of place, that it is making him ill. Which is WHY I strongly believe in borders, language, and culture … and feel it is time to DIVIDE the USA into two countries. Where we can live in the environment shaped by our own values. Where we can become governed by “our people” … and not “the swamp”. That will be the ONLY alternative if “OUR President” doesn’t transform this nation into a healthy, environment … as he is trying to do. So get used to it NPR-boy. OUR President is changing the landscape of this current leftist habitat. You better ADAPT to OUR values … or you will be fed to the “pigs”.

  4. NPR is looking to put together a collection of stories to justify “their” belief that fly-over country is full of racist, bigot, homophobes, that support Trump,,,,just before the midterm elections.
    I hope nobody believes that they are doing this to “understand” votes in fly-over country!

    So they suppress the stories. Is the author incapable of seeing the contradictions in his own rhetoric? If this article was intended to show an epiphany by a member of the left wing msm, it failed.
    The msm has failed US,their audience, but this author seems to believe the failing is society’s fault,and somehow the msm is almost blameless,and must be protected and nurtured because of their importance to a free Nation.
    Ironic in that much of the msm promotes the opposite of the many freedoms we enjoy.

  6. The 1st amendment that protects Journalists envisions a “HEALTHY” variety of independent POV from a News Media that Competes (Anti-Trust laws) in the market. That is NOT consistent with the existing “Group Think” Journalism in the USA….Group Think is agenda driven FACTS that only exist in the echo chamber, a pack of vicious dogs chasing down an helpless victim.. Group think is the Opposite of intent in the First Amendment
    It is easy to see how the Media became the enemy of the people, and they are… Sidney Blumenthal devised the BIG LIES that became the Hallmark of the CLINTON Media… He is a delusional pathological liar…If you read his book “The Clinton Wars” what he describes is the media GAME, (not unlike today’s Media) the bigger the LIE, the better the chase..
    Sid Vicious (Blumenthal) is/was pure evil (liked by Hillary)..Understanding his methods will put the excuse “JUST BIAS” away and drill down on media corruption… For Sale journalism is cheap opinion

  7. Spot on! By mocking and reviling the current dominant American media, we conservatives are declared to be “Anti 1st Amendment”. Once again, the leftist tools have got it backward. It is WE conservatives who are PRO-1st Amendment. The groupthink LEFTISTS are the one’s who are WRECKING the 1st Amendment by LIMITING Free Speech and Press to a “pre-approved” narrative.

  11. 10 or so years ago I fully felt for conservatives in the media’s bias against them. They no longer deserve the sympathy. For one thing, Fox news is a big deal and it is pretty obviously tilted right. For two, conservatives have had many chances to make something better and the best they’ve done is…Fox news, which is awful. Stop sucking.

  13. Hint: when leftists mock and diminish ANYTHING … it is a direct response (proportionally) to the effectiveness and quality of the opposition. The quality (and rationality) of Fox News is drawing viewers … everything else in the Tele-media is just goofball batshit crazy leftist fictional storytelling.

    I think Joseph Goebells had that one in the bag long long ago…yet, “…SOCIALIST…” was part of     their name tag that applies equally to the MSM as well.
