Spain is exploding

Today was supposed to be the day of a referendum on separation of Catalonia from Spain. It didn’t go well.
Catalonia is in the NE region of Spain. Way, way, way back it was its own country (actually Marches), the Catalan Counties. These were for the most part a result of Charlemange’s need to hold the line from the Umayyad Moors in Aquitaine.
A marriage later joined what France didn’t have with Aragon. Much later Aragon joined with Castile when Ferdinand married Isabella. The union became known as Spain. Together they finished the Reconquesta of the Iberian Peninsula.
Catalonia and its main city of Barcelona, was the last region to fall to Franco’s Nationalists in the Spanish Civil War, after which the war ended.

  1. I am not surprised – Spain has always been very authoritarian in its government (think Inquisition, think General Franco). The government definitely does not want a prosperous region which contributes more than its “fair” share in taxes to leave.

  2. I was on the ground in Barcelona and region until Wednesday 27th. The passion of many of the residents was evident, on both sides of the question. It was my feeling that there were more in favour of separation than against. Certainly, they were more vocal. Both sides expressed concern that violence would break out. Sadly – and not unexpectedly – those fears were realized. Happy we got away in advance.

  3. Yup. Spain was born of evil and was a terrible threat to the Enlightenment. Nearly invaded England. It really should be dismantled.
Even with its history of authoritarianism, the events over there are shocking. I expected the Spanish state to be evil but intelligent and prudent. They are being evil stupid. They are pushing Catalans away. What is even more shocking is the EU’s ineptitude. Catalonian separatists actually favor the EU in general. I doubt that will be the case with the EU silently complicit in Spain’s crimes. The mask has really come off, but they’ll be the first to wail about ‘Europe tearing apart’.

  4. The jackboot heel of the oppressive central government WILL stomp out any thought of self-rule and self-self determination. Globalism WILL BE OBEYED!!!!
    Globalism = Communism.
Catalonians need to go on a general STRIKE … perhaps their only weapon against the tyranny of The State. Starve the Takers … let them BEG more $$$ from Brussels.

  5. Amazing how a referendum is a “threat to democracy”, yet these self same “leaders” really want to know what voters feel.
But never give a shit what we really think.
As for those uniformed thugs… funny how antisocial our socialist comrades all seem to be.

  6. The Prime Minister refers to the referendum as “illegal” as if the approval of their federal gov’t is somehow helpful… like asking for permission to have a protest against gov’t.

  7. Oh gods. Now that is embarrassing. Thank you. Grammar…yeah well, whatever. Screwing up historical names with fictional characters…different story.

  8. yep. same old same old. the old guard feel the need to ‘crack down’ on dissent.
the dissenters view the thuggery cracking as all the more proof it’s time to leave the building.
it’s why revolutions happen, it is as predictable as the sunrise.
spain is the birthplace of the likes of Tomás de Torquemada and franco.
I wonder how THIS ‘bull fight’ will end. sign of the times !!!

  9. Twitter blocks an account promoting freedom against tyranny. Wow, what a surprise. Youtube does the same thing. These are not private companies that can do whatever they want. They are run by people who’s natural instincts are to stop citizens push back against government. So these media companies are arms of government and need to be dealt with accordingly.

  10. No, it certainly doesn’t. It does need the countries it has to each adhere more to the wishes and aspirations of their various peoples than to those of the transnational class of Eurocrats.

  11. If Catalonia does become a separate country, the EU should rejoice. After all, think of how much larger the bureaucracy in Brussels will become. It’s not called the gravy train for nothing.

  12. The ruskies have a long meddlesome history in Spain. They gotta be lurking somewhere in this. Bastards.
We’re sitting in the stands watching the EU implode. Looks good on ’em. Bastards.

  13. Oh yes it does. The ‘mickey mouse countries’ are the ones working best. Switzerland and Monaco are working, Holland has a shockingly good business climate.

  14. The Spanish Police look like a cross between ANTIFA and the Star Wars storm troopers. BIG GOVERNMENT is a fascist nightmare. The CATAEXIT will prevail … it’s just a matter of time … and arms.

  15. When the EU finishes tightening its grip on member states, this is what the next country that tries to Brexit will get as well.

  16. “Which historically, contrary to popular mantra, was at the time, as close to offering fair an impartial judgment based on scientific principles as possible.”
That’s a lie. The Inquisition was an assault on religious freedom. The Caliphate in Spain was an objectively superior civilization to what followed it.
If Franco is your countries savior, and he was no doubt the good guy, then your country has exactly the problem BM is talking about.

  17. Lol you predictably continue being stuck on stupid. Everything you ever heard about inquisition from popular sources is a load of manure. Countless lives were spared only because people were lucky to find themselves judged by inquisitors rather than by local authorities. The records of inquisition have been for the most part meticulously preserved and stand on their own merit.
As for your traditional apologist bull$hit about pisslam it isn’t worth addressing. Cleansing that cancer from Iberia was a great service to humanity. Pity it wasn’t cleansed from other Christian lands the followers of pedophile prophet have infested like North Africa and Middle East.
Same for your pathetic generalization about Franco, you found an authoritarian in 1930s Europe, oh my how unique.
