  1. Hey, yeah let’s have the gov’t tell us how to eat…because it’s worked out so well in the past with metabolic disorders caused by adherence to the ‘official’ food guide at epidemic levels.
Shut up Wall, gov’t has no credibility…especially the semi-commie types who try to pretend they aren’t.
Btw, natural and artificial hormones are not the same, or the artificial couldn’t be patented.

  2. I have no comment on the safety of growth hormones in competing hamburger chains’ offerings however the salt content in A&W has to be off the scale. Last time I ate there that was all I could taste was the salt. At least with McDonalds and Dairy Queen I can taste the meat in the sandwich. The same can not be said for A & W.

  3. Brad Wall is defending Canadian farmers. A&W uses almost entirely foreign grown/butchered beef in its burgers. They could easily source hormone free beef from Canada but prefer to put their efforts into encouraging gullibility in consumers. Brad Wall rightly notes that the burger buns (and the french fries which accompany the burgers) have a higher concentration of estrogen than a beef patty which can be produced with less feed and water if steers receive a tiny spot of estrogen on their skin so that they convert feed/water like heifers

  4. I must have been napping?! What sparked this food fight? I take it it has something to do with something A&W is or isn’t doing???
(Please; just a link to the origin of this would be great. Thanks.)
Just to be clear, I’m all in favour of supporting Cdn. farmers/ranchers.

  5. “What sparked this food fight?”
You mustn’t watch TV, at least in Alberta. A & W has endless annoying commercials with a fat little knob everyone wants to punch. The main gist is that A & W burgers are hormone free which is a lie.

Not a lie…not that I care, wouldn’t eat their crap anyway. Wall repeats the lie by implying synthetic and natural hormones are alike. They aren’t, or the synthetic couldn’t be patented.

Our 100% Pure Beef Guarantee means that all of our beef is raised without any added hormones or steroids…

  7. OK, thanks, I knew the A&W advert part (how can you avoid it?), but what triggered this latest barrage? A&W claims all their beef is Cdn. and Premier. Wall is saying different?
The contentious issue is that US beef/pork have synthetic growth hormones added (to their feed presumably). My understanding is that that’s not permitted in Canada. Basically A&W is simply stating that ALL their beef is Canadian and therefore added-hormone free.
The red flag has been that young girls (US only?)have been reaching puberty far earlier than historically the case.
Similar issues for mass feeding of antibiotics to farm animals; the list of antibiotic resistant organisms just keeps getting longer.
But I still don’t understand what Wall’s on about. Why now?

  8. OK: I briefly found the original pic of the A&W signage with the ‘Wall’ pun, and the comment from A&W about trying to find MORE Cdn. ranchers who will produce to A&W specs. One might infer from that that they are filling the shortfall with US beef, contrary to their 100% Cdn. claim. Is this basically what the argy bargy is about? And is it true?

  9. Let’s talk risk management here. The small amount of synthetic (more properly, non-bioidentical) hormone used in farming/ranching which differs slightly from the natural hormone, doesn’t matter nearly as much as endocrine disruptors (google them).
Eating acidic foods that are packaged in tin cans laced with Bisphenol ‘A’ (or ‘S’) as a preservative, can do far more damage (particularly to young/developing children) than synthetic hormones in beef. The reason they’re preservatives, is that they suppress bacteria by messing up the endocrine system. The same general type of endocrine system that humans have.
I’ve stopped eating canned tomatoes, but I continue to eat beef.
As for Brad Wall, he does us all a service by pointing us away from a simplistic, opportunistic view of hormones towards a more complex, realistic discussion. About all you can do in 140 characters.
Appealing to complexity isn’t a ruse, when the system in question is complex!

  10. yah strad, I’v noticed as well, that the loud mouthed Colon hasn’t been posting all that much lately, butt yer doing a find fillin job. And your stupid is certainly up to the job

  11. The red flag has been that young girls (US only?)have been reaching puberty far earlier than historically the case.
You’re going to have to account for the massive confounding factor of ready access to food overcharged with bioavailable carbs before you can claim that negligible amounts of hormones are causing “early” onset puberty.

  12. So there are 0.000004798 grams of hormones in a hamburger? Brad Wall is really going after the big fish here.

  13. They said Diethylstilbestrol, another synthetic estrogen used in cattle as well as humans, wasn’t a problem, until it was…even to succeeding generations.

In 1938, Dodds’s lab, along with the lab of Robert Robinson at Oxford, synthesized a new synthetic estrogen, called stilbestrol, and soon called DES. DES acted three times more powerfully then natural estrogen and was effective when subjects took it orally. Researchers produced it as a lightweight powder, and many of the male workers in the lab developed breasts due to inhaling DES. DES cost about two dollars per gram to produce, rather than the three hundred dollars to produce natural estrogen.

  14. You know what else contains sterol hormones? Damn near everything. Plants contain tons of it. Also, there is little or no evidence BpA is bad for anyone.

  15. There was a guy in our class who was about 5’2” in Grade 8. Not only was he short, but he had a small frame, and was weaker than a day old sparrow. His Dad took him to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. That was about 1961. If I remember right, they treated little Harold with growth hormones. He made it to about 5’7” and his health turned right around. The treatment cost his dad a fortune.
After grad, he ended up working as a meteorologist in the Arctic. So there has to be a bright side to growth hormones. Just as long as we don’t overdose on ”Growmore.” Like these gals may have.

  16. Tiny amount of hormones in food consumed mostly by adults: OMG, horrible, natural-or-nothing!
Pumping huge amount of hormones into mentally ill pre-teen kids who think they’re the ‘wrong’ gender: perfectly okay with no real repercussions whatsoever.
