Atlantic Hurricane Trends and Mortality Updated
The title above is from the once respected Daily Telegraph in the UK. This post updates the one earlier this week to take account of information gathered through the high quality commentary.
The frequency of Atlantic hurricanes making landfall has not increased since 1880. The reported increase in the frequency of all hurricanes can be explained by under-recording in the pre-flight, pre-satellite era. The accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) index in the North Atlantic has been flat since 1950. Changes in ACE with time may be associated with the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) and clearly has nothing to do with CO2 emissions. The maximum intensity of hurricanes has not increased with time. Nor has the normalised cost of hurricane damage increased in the USA.

No surprises here, but an excellent summary. Weather can be a deadly killer, particularly to those without technology on their side.
Thanks Euan!
“Would you like to be sitting in this queue in a Nissan Leaf with Irma barreling down upon you? Or would you feel more comfortable in a Ford Raptor with 100 gallons of spare gas in the back?
Glad to see I am not alone in thinking of those endless lineups seen on the interstate and how they would play out with with the electric utopias championed by Wynne, Klein and others. More relevant to Canada is the picture of the Scottish lineup in the blizzard. Or more recently, the evacuation of Fort McMurray. Authorities can readily arrange supplies of diesel/gas and it can be delivered along the highway. Electrical recharging, not so much.
Do these zealots ever stop to think of such practical concerns? Why is the media so silent on the obvious limitations, absurdities of replacing petrol based vehicles? I guess they are simply blinded by their Green pipe dreams.
The goal of the utopians in government – Wynne, Gregor Robertson – is to make their lives better AT YOUR COST, on your backs.
They think that by reducing YOUR impact on THEIR lives – e.g., government’s forcing the EV on you – it will increase THEIR survival and THEIR prosperity.
That’s why they are taking YOUR money in the form of taxes and then giving most of it to themselves (and their supporters) and then some money to a situation that will, in their minds, reduce YOUR impact on THEIR lives.
I’m beginning to think that newspapers and social “scientists” are actually conducting a giant gullibility test on western citizens: can people in rich, modern countries be convinced to believe the most outlandish bullshit we can think of; how easy is it to return them to superstitious, religious-based thinking of primitive cultures; will they accept the re-emergence of tribal, race-based bigotry and segregation; will they deny basic biology; will they willing return to energy poverty; will they give up on basic civil rights and even democracy…?
I mean how else do you explain headlines about apocalyptic global warming (with a not so subtle touch of God’s Wrath reasoning); universities with black, Hispanic and female only spaces; claims that whites are born evil; teaching that maleness is toxic; headlines that “men” give birth to babies; defending putting a male rapist (claiming he is female) in a women’s prison; encouraging university and corporate led attacks on free speech and freedom of association; the NYT’s glowing, nostalgic look at communism; cheering on political violence; supporting big, monopolistic social media corporations version of red-scare McCarthite blacklisting; believing we can move to 100% renewable power and electric vehicles with existing technology. And that’s just a partial list that tests people’s gullibility and critical thinking ability. The only other option is that we are experiencing absolute madness from the chattering classes on a massive scale.
All the wailing and teeth-gnashing about how Irma and Harvey ‘prove climate change is real!’ simply reinforce the concept that as a species we are no more intelligent today than at any low-points in human history. We have more data and information, and the knowledge level of our ‘leading’ innovators is incredible; unfortunately, the behavior and moods of the masses–even those who’ve been ‘validated’ by the most well-respected institutions of higher education–reflect that as a whole we behave as a mass of emotional, apathetic, ignorant morons. Sorry to sound cynical, but too many of my over-educated friends are proving themselves to be brain-dead–and embracing that willingly.
The concept of throwing virgins into a volcano to stop a solar eclipse many millennia ago is still in play today. Just switch “AGW” for eclipses and tax dollars for virgins. Everything else is the same.
Perhaps a thorough understanding of Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds should be mandatory before you are allowed to graduate from high school and postsecondary education. A classical understanding and not postmodern contortions, of course.

And let me add …
. NASA used a Thor Able rocket to launch TIROS-1 (Television Infrared Observation Satellite), from Cape Canaveral, Fl., on April 1, 1960, at 6:40 a.m., EST.
We have only been tracking each and every hurricane, and accurately reporting their strength since 1960. 19effing60!!! For barely 50 some odd years have we had accurate, reliable information on hurricane activity and intensity. And all the proxys for historic hurricane activity are flimsy at best. All the fancy charts and graphs are an exercise in “garbage-in, garbage-out”. Euan’s comparative graphs PROVES this point quite nicely.
Similarly, we have only been measuring Arctic ice cover since 1979 with dedicated satellite coverage (ohhhhh mammmmma … space is soooooo “crowded” with satellites). Yet, we are constantly lectured by a hysteric Global Warmist media that … “Arctic ice coverage, thickness, etc. is the smallest in HISTORY”. Really? What utter nonsense. And again, the proxy data for historic ice cover (primarily ice core samples) is still not a reliable source of comparative data … especially when “certain” ice cores are ignored and dismissed if they argue against the preferred narrative.
Every time I read a story that includes … “_ _ _ _ is the worst in the HISTORY of the world”. I laugh and move on. This is the primary ruse of the global warmists … that they claim to KNOW, with certainty, what the state of the planetary systems were in ancient history. All intended to support the idea that industrialized mankind has WRECKED it all!
@ creepy, tks for link. Do you know if this has been widely distributed? Its interesting and valuable to know that Tony Heller has a VERY solid grounding in science!
@ theyouk, the internet has socialised science. Once elitist, it is now the domain of the mob.
@ Kenji, I agree esp wrt to the sea ice record. We have 48 years of data, a mere blip in Holocene time. There were 3 options 1) growing sea ice (possible disaster) 2) stable sea ice (unlikely) and 3) receding sea ice (much better than 1).
Only morons would read anything into a 48 year long geological record!
I am humbled to have my post receive your notice. I greatly admire your work.
“especially when “certain” ice cores are ignored and dismissed if they argue against the preferred narrative.”
That reminded me that during the Senate hearing ~ 2009 the ice core research of Iceland by Dr Richard Alley (he attended by did not support AGW Theory @ that time) The word was that Dr Alley didn’t know what to look for.??? odd but funny
I had read a Harvard premise (1980’s) that IF one could decode the Hartbeat of one grain of Sand… It would tell the history of the Planet….(Think outside the Box)
Yes! AGW theorists are decoding heartbeats of sand or Gore’s farts
