Trudeau and Morneau are pushing ahead with their ill-thought and dangerous tax changes under the guise of fairness with the intention of dividing Canadians. They come out and yell that we small business owners are thieves, stiffing the system, dangerous.
Get the Conservatives to support small business owners, farmers, the doctor and vet and you can then claim they are the party of the 1%. If the electorate is stupid enough to believe it, you’re set.
The fact that it’s stupid tax-policy, a drastic change to small business practice and an incentive to just shut everything down means nothing to these loose-guns.
Some outlets see the idiocy for what it is.
CPC MP Erin O’Toole writes in the Toronto Sun about who will actually be impacted by these dangerous policies.
Kevyn Nightingale lambastes the Liberals for playing politics with such important gov’t policies.
Mathieu Bedard in a Special to the Sun highlights the history of these supposed “loopholes” and who these children in gov’t are targeting.
Jim Warren cynical Liberal politics of division that pit Canadians against each other.
Lorne Gunter highlights who the real 1% are in Canada.
Jon Robson asks for a tax-policy that isn’t always an increase.
Geez, looking at the distribution of those links, which media outlet appears to be sticking up for small business?

” If the electorate is stupid enough to believe it…”
Hey, this electorate made Justin Trudeau PM! I think they are stupid enough to believe anything.
Trudeau made a stupid statement at one of the debates about wives of doctors getting a free tax ride; that’s how government policy now works.
On the whims of the Dauphin, our neo-despot, though unfortunately unenlightened; but only those whims approved by his statist puppet masters.
Don’t you just love those folks who get rich on capitalism, then go out of their way to crush it, like Strong, Soros, & the morons now running Fox News.
Oh but it’s “fairer” that the hardest workers pay more taxes. Note to the middle class in crisis – it will soon be “fairer” that you pay more tax.
Just think of it as economics from the heart of your wallet, plus new debt on all our behalf at $30b a year. Is that what actually mean by “fair?”
One question: is this irony or hypocrisy – that Mr Morneau uses a tax “loophole” (his terminology not mine) with an offshore tax haven?
Maybe it’s just my deplorableness, you know appealing to my worst instincts, like resenting being lied to and ripped off, but this doesn’t seem “fair.”
“The report notes that Morneau resigned from Morneau-Shepell “and all of its subsidiaries”, going on to say that “Morneau is one of the people that actually do have legitimate businesses there. Morneau-Shepell set up the Bahamas subsidiary in 2014 to consolidate the pension consulting they do in the Caribbean. It’s just a happy coincidence that the Canadian firm gets to reduce taxes by setting up a Bahamas branch.”
So, Morneau did not do anything illegal, but he did take actions to reduce the amount of taxes he pays in Canada. The irony here is immense. Morneau is pushing tax changes because he and Trudeau claim Canadian small businesses aren’t paying enough. Yet, those business are still paying taxes in Canada. But Morneau and others using offshore tax havens seem to want to avoid paying Canadian taxes, and the government is refusing to take action.”

OK one more question. Charging exorbitant speaking fees to cash strapped public service organizations to fund a political campaign – was that “fair?”
Funny thing about the doctors. I think there was unspoken agreement between the government and the doctors that the government pay and doctors support Universal Health Care system.
A patient going to a doctor for a visit. Doctor calculates:
-building and utilities: $20
-staff : $20
-supplies: $3
-time lost on education:$10
-time committed to updating education :$3
-savings for retirement. sick leave, holidays, dental and medical insurance: $20
-the value of services delivered: $50 (in this particular case, in other can go higher)
-stress of loosing a license to practice or meeting crown attorney in case of mistake: $10
-stress of moral obligation dealing with matters of life and death: $10
-overtime : does not apply (doesn’t matter if a doctor works 8 or 12 hours a day)
Total: $146
The patient says: no problem government will pay.
Government pays the doctor: $40 …….for helping someone in pain, for resolving complicated problems of chronic illness, for saving a life.
You see where I am going…soon the health care in Canada will cost a lot and it won’t be a government that will pay.
Shiny is gambling with Canadians current and future prosperity. The semi-literate talking head’s puppeteers are addicted to some kind of global socialism and are willing to steal from Canadians to feed their habit and then label the theft as tax fairness. Not only does this tax grab help to feed the spending habit, but also divides the country and weakens the individualism of small business by confiscating their resources. I find it hard to believe reasonable Liberals will not balk at these proposals, but I guess the lure of government patronage and pensions trumps logic and fairness.
It’s time we start asking What Tax Breaks Are You and Your Trust Fund Receiving Mr. Prime Minister ??? Mr.Morneau ???
It needs to repeatedly be pointed out that those two are 1%ers, how much more are they willing to pay?
Mr. Trudeau, what loop-holes are you and your accountant using to reduce your TAXES?, and how are they anymore fair than small business deductions, considering they are trying to build something, taking great risk to do so, while your money is idle.
#Justin, show your taxes!
The fundamental issue is that Canada’s taxes are simply too high for businesses to prosper under, which is why all of these various strategies were built into the Tax Act. They are not there to incentivize people to create businesses but rather to remove the disincentive high taxes created. This may read like a distinction without a difference but it is essential in understanding the crux of the issue and it is why Robson’s central question is poignant: if you want tax fairness, why not simply reduce everyone else’s rates?
@Carl
“#Justin, show your taxes!”
It may not show much unless some kind of Panama papers will show up again.
Doctors took a major pay cut a couple years ago in Ontario. Quietly, with no media attention, OHIP cut 30% in payouts for diabetes treatment.
So the doctors stopped doing diabetes treatment. Diabetes specialty practices closed up all over the province. Y’all didn’t hear jack about it.
Now, the feds propose that doctors take a 10% pay cut. Also every other self-employed person in the country who actually makes any money worth talking about.
I foresee two outcomes. First, the next election will be very interesting, as former Liberal donors throw money at the Conservatives.
Second, the grey and black economy in this country will get a big boost. We could end up like Italy and Greece pretty soon, everything under the table and in cash.
These morons voted for a Drama teacher to be their leader, and they expected that coming from a drama school background he would have any clue about running a business or what it takes to run a business.
Can we get a survey on how many of the 50% of small businesses that failed are by NDP/Liberal supporters…
“Vote for me and I’ll screw over the rich. Oh, and there could be a free lunch too.” Despite finding out that they were richer than they thought and the free lunch never really materialized, Venezuelans fell for that line over and over. Look where it got them.
Now, Trudeau, Morneau and Butts are taking Canada on down the same path using the same tactics. With the help of CBC, CTV, Global, City, Toronto Star and Globe and Mail it is an easier task than Chavez had.
Sadly, way woo many here in Canada are falling for it. If you try to explain how they are being manipulated they just stick their fingers into their ears and sing, “Lah, Lah, Lah” or chant socialist slogans.
When I talk about the subject with most people I know, most of them answer: “I don’t pay attention to politics.” Fine, but then don’t complain about the government you end up with after the next election, assuming you bothered to cast a ballot in the first place.
On average to people a business is a business is a business. No differentiation between a large Corp and your single proprietor with an employee or two. They are all rich ! The 1.2 million LTE Corp voters are inconsequential compared to those who wish to belly up to the trough . For them it is always rational to make someone else pay .
is this related at all to paul martinet who registered his canada steamship lines watercraft offshore?
it isn’t?
oh. it is. another example of liberal hypocrisy . . . . m’kay.
why didn’t this plan come up in the election campaign? ahhh, because harper was a g***mn control freak bully whose behaviour stung too many canadians who then opted for turdeux, and thus the predictable outcome.
The best I could do thus far was to send an inquiry to the FM via my MP asking of anyone in their caucus understood the process of capital flight and why it happens.
This ends when the blu-libs realize their own party is taking them for granted.
So the solution, as it appears to me, is not to be a Canadian Controlled Private Corporation. What you need is to have your Canadian business owned and controlled by a foreign registered parent. After paying salaries to staff, any retained earnings are paid to the parent company, offshore. The retained earnings can be invested by the foreign parent, and pay dividends to the Canadian owners under the normal tax rules because the CRA has no authority over a foreign entity.
This is how EVERY foreign multinational in Canada works. It just adds some overhead to small businesses to become “multinationals”.
@Joseph
The only idea of ‘capital’ they have is ‘money that rich have’…in twenty dollar bills.
You should add this excellent article to the list:
http://business.financialpost.com/investing/why-the-liberal-plan-to-tax-entrepreneurs-who-invest-will-come-back-to-haunt-canada
This issue is a sleeper as the Grits try to frame it as class warfare with the sock puppet as the slayer of the rich tax cheats, but it is going to boil over. The fact is that the rich tax cheats don’t exist: they pay most of the income tax collected (the top 20% or earners pay over half of all tax; the bottom 50% pay less that 10% with most paying nothing), and already pay taxes at much higher rates (see the article and comments). The issue is that everyone pays too much tax. Too much income tax; too much consumption tax; too much property tax; too many regulatory and user fees that try and pretend they too are not taxes; and too many Crown enterprise which sell you so-called essential services larded with political initiatives whose costs are just one more tax. Which leads to the real unease about the land: it is not about taxes but about spending – which every level of government wants to pretend is unconstrained by income. This isn’t really about going after “the rich”; it is just the first step in taking more from everyone.
If the sock puppet wanted to discuss who is or is not paying their fair share then, when the average tax rate is about 12%, that anyone is paying an average rate of over 45% or marginal rates of 53% or 74% should be the focus. Corporate taxation is complicated (and already vilified by progressives and their friends in the press) but taxes are always, in the end, fully paid by the beneficial owners as individuals. Mr Trudeau has apparently never understood where the money from the family corporation cheques, the ones that allowed him to drift through life and into the PM job, came from. Corporations exist for very, very good business reasons and their taxation has been tinkered with, to encourage them to act in ways that successive governments have desired, for decades. The message I get from the tinkering proposed is that “they” don’t have any concept of retained earnings as collateral to build and sustain a business. Not surprising from a crusading bunch who can borrow at will, and never have to meet with a bank manager.
This is going to be a (yet another) disaster to add to the damage that Liberals have inflicted on the manufacturing and energy industries. Businesses that once paid taxes, well paid and productive private sector workers that once paid taxes, and the communities they lived in are all paying for it already. When the penny finally drops that someone else has to fill that gap, who the someone else will be will tell the tale.
In a discussion of this issue elsewhere, someone suggested that it is in line with policies coming from the globalists. Their aim is to break down capitalism and replace it with socialism. Property rights also have to go. I don’t know if this is the reason behind the move, but it would not surprise me. The move certainly comes across as something intended to undermine entrepreneurship.
The crowd that voted for bongo don’t pay attention to politics. They don’t complain unless their ox is being gored. Bongo gets an easy ride with these guys. No critical thinking involved.
Unless the economy collapses bongo will probably win another majority.
But Justin looks so good!
Their aim is to break down capitalism and replace it with socialism.
What is purported to be socialism is really a re-hashed version of feudalism. There’s a ruling elite that lives in unimaginable luxury and comfort and then there’s the peasantry, serfs whose lot in life is to not only be oppressed but to exist in grinding poverty. It sounds great in theory but, in practice, there’s always someone who profits greatly off the misery of the masses.
After all, if George Soros, a shameless self-confessed billionaire, was a true socialist, why hasn’t he practiced wealth redistribution by selling off all his assets and sharing the proceeds?
come on BA, George soreA$$ is only worth 25 billion, and that is hardly sufficient to live on, let alone help other’s with.
LindaL, we don’t have “property” rights in kanada, we have right to use (of property) and that distinction is important. It is hard to “take away” property, it is much easier to take away right to use. And guess who was the idiot that implemented this “right to use” BS, TurD’Oh the elder!
Thanks for posting these links Lance.
“Making Canadian tax payers less stupid, one post at a time”.
Captcha is “URGENCIES Ausfahrt”. Is that German for “I just shit myself”?
This is dumb, as Andrew Coyne and others have written at great length. Small business should not be mollycoddled by the tax code. One rate to rule them all, and in Canada tax them.
“If the electorate is stupid enough to believe it…”
Hey, this electorate made Justin Trudeau PM! I think they are stupid enough to believe anything.”
That John, is the crux of the matter.
And Concerned, “On average to people a business is a business is a business.”, exactly.
The media hated Harper and they got their dummy elected and that is all they care about. If socialism and class warfare kills the economy so much the better. The energy industry and it’s capital are fleeing a hostile environment and small family business might as well be destroyed. Stalin at least waited for ten years until NEP had rejuvenated the economy. This jackass started to destroy the economy from his mandate’s getgo.
On a related note, Ontario’s $15 minimum wage policy is designed to cause unemployment and increase the numbers of the underclasses which the cultural Marxists believe can represent a substitute “working class” for the purpose of overthrowing capitalism, as per the philosophy of the Frankfurt School and Herbert Marcuse.
Good bye doctors, we’ll miss you.
oh my. I am going to resist saying the obvious.
“someone suggested that it is in line with policies coming from the globalists” LindaL
The Marxist globalists mantra is actually “Social Justice” They “do” want to destroy all capitalism & AGW was their method of global taxation. The AGW science is DEAD, but Social Justice still need it as a talking point…Blame & Shame.. Crap just breaks down into a stinking mass of slime..
The Supporting cast of Marxist “Social Justice” is easy to define.. They are the grievance generation across ALL cultures… The UN ETC
The global Mothers are playing a role.. MADD (Mothers against Drunk Driving) worked very well by conditioning society & changing Laws… MAPF (Mothers against Professional Football) will destroy America’s favorite Sport…The decline is predictable…
WE will always have a grievance society! Understanding them is mandatory
Canada is doing its own, kinder gentler, version of kulak liquidation???
Canada, please pull out of this; it is national suicide.
The simpleton came along as the perfect vehicle for the communists to seize Canada, so called daddy Peeair ,( Pappa Was A Rolling Stone) started it, steeped this toddler in it, and along came the backroom scum to put the poopsie out front with ear pieces and strings, the media, (Coyne and his phony outrage) did what they were told to do and polish this turd so the dopey would elect him, well here we are, the start of Hugo Turdos march toward Venezuela north, seize production through taxation and shazzam.
There is nothing in Canada’s tax system that is “one rate”. Each province has a separate tax rate. HST varies by province. Personal income tax is a series of progressive rates. Corporate tax rates vary by revenue. Capital gains, dividends and income are taxed at different rates. Even politicians get a portion of their salary tax free.
Why single out small businesses?
Oh UnMe;
– Your trolling is so wrong to use the, Scion failed life Andy Coyne, who starting from a family of Governor of the Bank of Canada, could only whine enough to be able to attend a Bilderberg Convention as the high point of His Career- as your expert reference.
If this Slanted Political effort to capture the NDP (Socialist-Heavy) —
{Think Venezuela going from Richest South American Country to the Country which cannot feed or provide toilet paper in less than One Generation}
Voters through vicious Vote Buying then all Small Business Owners, including my family’s, will ultimately be accused of child abuse. This after decades of working very late and many, many weekends without compensation to build a business employing more than a dozen People.
Remember also the Liberal Party in many Governance Situations have been proven corrupt. The Judicial System in Ontario is now undertaking the Prosecution of the Premier’s Office Staff deleting emails from the “Former(s?) Premier’s Computers.
Every dirty political scheme the Liberals inner group can do to protect their own tax-payer paid income has been done over the years.
The same reason the back bench Liberals don’t do the right thing and the moderate Muslims don’t stand up for the right thing. They just don’t have the ba!!s to do it.
