As for your link, while there is such a thing as patriotic correctness, they ascribe politically correct attitudes to it. For example:

At six years of age throwing rocks over a cliff my older brother told me I throw like a girl. It devastated me. I begged him to demonstrate a proper boy throw. He showed a most impractical way that I never could manage and it did dog me for years. When I told him all that last year he laughed like a loon.

I just finished reading the story of the Texas schoolteacher who signed on to lurk on an online “walkie talkie” and wound up spending a day and a half helping out the Cajun Navy and also getting the high of hearing someone being saved and the low, low of hearing that some people had drowned.
Then I read about Ashley from Oregon who is outraged about a sign in Wisconsin. Ashely was likely very disappointed that she wasn’t at home. Then she could turn the store owner over to the courts and get a 6 figure fine levied (the Christian bakers of LGBwhatever infamy).
Anyway, Ashley, from far away this Canadian suggests to you that those people from Texas and Louisiana and wherever the Cajun Navy exist, are what the USA is about. Turds from Oregon, not so much.

Mike, here’s the deal: of course it is virtue signaling from the opposite side of the spectrum. And as such I find it a bit boring.

For the truth is in a sane world none of those things mentioned on that sign should raise a whisker, and the individual would be free to accept or ignore them in a civil and polite way, knowing them to be nothing more egregious than civil and polite pleasantries. With this rationale in place, such things as what that sign purports is seen in a more reasonable light, and one does not care overmuch if someone says it to them. At the most if one does cross over to being truly offended, one just finds another purveyor of the same product from which to buy — of course many who are freaking over this most definitely don’t want anyone to have the freedom to do that either.
But in the collapse of western civilization we have now turned the corner where what was once merely a pleasantry, signifying nothing more, has become a tribal signal — to be upheld vehemently or attacked and destroyed viciously…we are in the age of trifles and fancies, and more of the same — and worse — is what we have to look forward to.

Good comment. I will add that the “pleasantries” on the sign are traditions in the U.S.A.(and many of them in Canada) which used to be “signals” of being a normal member of being part of the “tribes” of America and Canada.

I worked every bit as hard (as a father) to get my only daughter to throw like a boy. It took some time, because women have a significantly different pelvis structure than men. Sorry, but it is true … and women ALWAYS run significantly different than men. Trust me … I coached top level competitive soccer for BOTH boys and girls. Top athletes, both boys and girls. Some of the most competitive, high-engery, sleek, athletic girls you have ever seen … and they ALL “run like girls”. The proper baseball throwing motion, and a significant amount of the power, comes from the lower body. Girls have more trouble with this than boys. Simple Physiology … boys and girls ARE different … and my o my … vive la difference !! “Thank God for Little Girls” (hat tip Maurice Chevalier, Lerner and Lowe). But it is now “heresy” for saying so.

Though it may seem to many here as trivial, it is a symptom of cultural and social rot that has been prevalent for a long time. If a private business cannot issue greetings in any way, shape or form, what comes next? Are people really that offended by “Merry Christmas” (or “Happy Diwali” or “Happy Hanukkah”)? Is there nothing going on in one’s life that this should be turned into a crusade?
And Jenny is correct: Ashley may be a total moron but those who inspired her are far worse.
I am perfectly all right with the shaming of bad behavior. As long as I define what bad behavior is. I happen to agree with the sentiments expressed on the sign. Ashley’s morals not so much.
Claiming that people should not be shamed is stupid – shame, guilt, oppression, violence – these are all tools of social control and are used every day by individuals and groups. We put pedophiles in prison and we shoot them if they resist arrest or attempt to escape.
People like Ashley are attempting to puff themselves up using the internet. To make themselves appear more influential than they are, in order to use the leverage provided by an amenable authority in order to impose their values. Ridicule is the best answer.
This is another skirmish in the cultural conflict that pits normal people against perverts. The tools of societal control (shame in this case) may not be effective on the people who share Ashley’s opinions. Ridicule is a good choice though.
But the people who state that we must not shame people, or that political correctness and patriotic correctness are equally morally bad, are stupid and naïve.
